Title: What's a Private Kyoto Food and Culture Walking Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report

The guests were visitors from North America. One of them had been to Japan before, while it was the first visit for the other. When I talked about history and culture, they listened patiently, but seemed to take in the explanations quickly and preferred to move on to the next thing. However, once the topic turned to food, they became remarkably talkative. They mentioned they had also enjoyed kaiseki cuisine. The guests especially loved sweets, and at Nishiki Market they snacked here and there on treats such as strawberry daifuku mochi and honey ice cream, and even bought bottled honey as a souvenir. In the end, our time came to say goodbye at Pontocho, and my final explanations covered the shops in Gion and along Sannenzaka, as well as talk of Osaka's Dotonbori, which they would visit the next day — how takoyaki and okonomiyaki are absolute must-eats in Osaka. I forgot to introduce the pork buns from 551 Horai, a soul food of the Kansai region (in Kansai, the expression "butaman" is more common than "nikuman").

Hello, this is Kazu Akiyama, your tour guide. Nice to meet you and welcome to Japan. Thank you for joining me on the tour. Now I am a retired salaried worker, living in Osaka. I have been very much interested in not only learning Japanese history, culture, religion myself, but also talking about them (sometimes going off topics) in English with tourists from all over the world as well. I am so excited being with you as your guide on coming day! I am very much looking forward to you enjoying with me visiting the must-see places and some of the hidden gems. See you soon. Thank you – Kazu Akiyama
