    What Is a Private Tokyo Walking Tour Like in Summer? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America. Since they seemed sensitive to the heat, I paid extra attention and took frequent cool-down breaks as we went around. They mentioned that watching "Shogun" had sparked their interest in Japanese history, and even in the hot and humid weather they listened very attentively to my explanations. They wanted to have lunch at a place where locals eat, so I took them to a restaurant in Asakusa, and they were very pleased. Since one of the guests was not fond of fish, I arranged a tempura set meal without fish (the restaurant is very flexible in accommodating such requests). Finally, I saw them off at Shibuya Station on the Ginza Line, ending the tour. Overall, I believe the guests enjoyed themselves thoroughly and were satisfied with the experience.

    Title: What Is a Private Full-Day Tokyo Tour Like in Summer? A Licensed Guide's Report The day was very hot with no rain at all, and the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace were almost unbearably hot. The tour was progressing smoothly, with the guests buying souvenirs along Nakamise Street in Asakusa and enjoying a pleasant lunch at a tempura restaurant. However, at the observation deck of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, one of the guests sat down and then collapsed sideways. Looking pale and breaking into a cold sweat, the guest appeared to be experiencing low blood pressure. With the help of the staff, the guest was allowed to lie down in a separate room, and after a while recovered a little. The guest was then taken down to the first floor in a wheelchair, and we cancelled the remaining plans from the Metropolitan Government Building area and returned to the Hotel by taxi. I was relieved that the guest was ultimately fine.

    What Is a Quiet Morning Walking Tour of Kyoto Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The booking came in two days in advance, and the guest had already visited many of the famous spots independently, so they requested "places that are not too crowded." Since they had already been to Fushimi Inari Taisha and the Arashiyama bamboo grove, I proposed a morning route through the quieter Pontocho, Shinbashi, and Shirakawa areas, leading to Heian Shrine and Nanzen-ji. When we met on the day, the guest mentioned they would be flying home in the early afternoon via Tokyo. Their inn was near Nishiki Market, and we had planned to head from Takoyakushi via Kawaramachi-dori toward Pontocho, but when the guest asked, "When did Nishiki Market begin?" we returned to Nishiki Tenmangu to look at the water once said to have been used to chill fish. When I explained why there is a Tenmangu shrine in the middle of the town and what a Tenmangu is, the guest thanked me, saying, "I've traveled around on my own, but I had no idea about any of this." We then proceeded via the Takase River toward Pontocho. As the guest was the type interested in many things, I explained everything we came across. In particular, when I mentioned that the Pontocho Kaburenjo Theater opens its rooftop in summer for a beer garden where geiko and maiko participate, the guest said, "It's a shame I didn't know about that in advance." Next, as we were about to head from Kirodoshi toward Shinbashi, the guest mentioned they had strolled Hanamikoji the day before, so I explained about Ichiriki-tei, visible across Shijo-dori. The guest wanted to see Ichiriki-tei up close, so we crossed the street and took a few photos in front of it. We then walked toward Shinbashi and viewed Tatsumi Bridge. As the guest seemed interested in stories about Kyoto's geisha, I also pointed out the blackboard listing the class schedule at the Yasaka Nyokoba. We then strolled along the Shirakawa River out to Sanjo-dori. The guest asked many questions along the way, and just as we reached the front of Chion-in and neared Ippon-bashi, I also spoke about how Japanese Buddhism has changed over the ages. When we reached Ippon-bashi, as expected, the guest asked whether it was okay to cross, and requested photos on the bridge. They must have really liked it, striking various poses on their own. We had planned to go to Heian Shrine and then head to Nanzen-ji, but since it was already nearing 9:00, I explained that we would go to Nanzen-ji first. We then strolled along the Lake Biwa Canal, and the guest was delighted, saying the beautiful mountain-surrounded scenery reminded them of their own hometown. When I explained that after the capital moved to Tokyo, Kyoto citizens attracted an industrial exposition to this area, which is why there are many municipal and national facilities here, and that they used the Lake Biwa Canal to build a hydroelectric plant and once ran city trams, the guest listened with great interest. We then headed to Nanzen-ji and climbed the Sanmon gate. Here too, the guest listened to my explanations with interest in many things. We then went to the Hatto and Hojo. As the guest wanted to "experience the tea ceremony," we decided to enter a tea seating. I felt it best to simply let them enjoy the tea however they liked, so I did not explain much about tea etiquette. When the guest remarked, "In Zen you meditate, but meditating makes you sleepy," I explained, "That is why the Zen sect introduced the custom of drinking tea," and the guest thanked me, saying it now made sense. As the guest was interested in many things, by the time we finished viewing the Hojo it was nearing 11:10. When I asked whether they wanted to see the flow of water at the Suirokaku aqueduct, they said, "I was just about to say I wanted to," so we walked up along the Suirokaku to see the water flow. We then viewed the garden of Tenju-an from directly in front of the gate, and when I mentioned that the tour was nearing its end, the guest asked, "I know the way back, but what will you do?" When I said I would take the subway from Keage Station, the guest said, "I'll walk with you to Keage Station," so I suggested we go to Keage Station passing in front of Konchi-in. As expected, they were moved by the quiet atmosphere of the area. Along the way, when I mentioned that this is where the grave of Yamana Sozen, the western army commander of the Onin War, is located, I was very surprised that the guest knew about the Northern and Southern Courts period. When I explained that the Onin War came after the Northern and Southern Courts period, we arrived at Keage Station, so we said our goodbyes. I accidentally took the photos in portrait orientation. A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from Europe who showed great interest in Japanese culture, asking many questions and enjoying a wide range of conversations throughout the day. The heat was intense, so we managed by taking frequent water breaks, lending a parasol, and handing out cooling sheets. Since they had arrived only the day before, they gradually grew tired and seemed a little worn out toward the end. They reacted strongly to the mini-pig café and capybara café on Takeshita Street. For lunch, at the guests' request, we went to a ramen restaurant, which they enjoyed very much. As they planned to shop at their leisure the following day, at Senso-ji Temple they only purchased protective charms. Using a subway map, I explained how to get from the Hotel to the Shinkansen platform and how to reach Akihabara the next day. They had purchased Shibuya Sky tickets only for themselves and said there was no need for me to wait, so we took a photo together at the end and finished a little early. They thanked me with big smiles, so I believe they enjoyed the tour.

    Title: What Is a Private Full-Day Tokyo Tour Like? Meiji Shrine, Yanaka Ginza, and Akihabara with a Licensed Guide The guests were a group visiting from North America. They had already been traveling in Japan for about a week and arrived in Tokyo from Nagoya on the morning of the tour. Since we were able to meet ten minutes early, we reviewed the itinerary and took time to explain Japanese history before setting off. One of the guests had studied Japanese history and was familiar with the daimyo system and the alternate attendance system (sankin-kotai). At Meiji Shrine, we entered from the north approach so that we could walk mostly in the shade of the trees (photos). At the pair of camphor trees, we took a photo of the whole group together. In Yanaka Ginza, they enjoyed yakitori and menchi-katsu from a butcher shop, then took a break in a back alley eating black sesame gelato at a gelato shop. The atmosphere of the back streets was lovely, and this is a spot I can continue to use in the future. In Akihabara, they saw dozens of young people promoting maid cafes and reflected on their futures. As a bonus, we stopped by a department store in Ginza and introduced the basement food floor and the restaurant floors on the 11th and 12th levels. Today's driver communicated very smoothly regarding pickup and drop-off points and the direction of the vehicle, so we were able to make our rounds efficiently.

A Licensed Guide's Report [Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.)](https://www.j-g-a.org/) guide led a private one-day tour of Tokyo for a guest visiting from North America, including a tea ceremony experience and visits to major sightseeing spots. From the following week, the guest planned to travel by cruise ship to Kyoto, Osaka, Kochi, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, and Jeju Island in Korea. During our travels, I recommended local gourmet foods in each area and a one-day tour of Nara as much as I could. We arrived at the tea ceremony venue about 10 minutes late, but the tea instructor enthusiastically taught the teachings and etiquette of the tea ceremony, and the guest relaxed and enjoyed it thoroughly, though we ran about 20 minutes over the scheduled end time. The guest was scheduled to join an izakaya tour in West Shinjuku that evening. To make it in time for the 5:40 PM meeting, I guided them through selected highlights of Asakusa, then led them to a taxi stand, told the driver the name and exact address of the izakaya tour meeting point, and we parted with smiles.

    Title: What Is a Private Kyoto Tour Like on a Hot Summer Day? A Licensed Guide's Report on Nijo Castle, Kinkaku-ji, and Ryoan-ji The guests were a group visiting from North America. I took them to Nijo Castle, Kinkaku-ji, and Ryoan-ji. However, during the visit to Kinkaku-ji, some of the guests felt unwell due to the heat and returned to their hotel by taxi. I continued the tour with the remaining members of the group, but after lunch, while I was explaining the rock garden from the veranda at Ryoan-ji, the heat became unbearable for them and they requested to end the tour early, so we finished ahead of schedule. There was a request to visit Fushimi Inari on the way back, but as there was not enough time, I had to decline. Instead, I took them via Heian Shrine to the venue for the tea ceremony experience they had reserved, and we parted ways there. The restaurant reservation had been made for the full group, but I explained the situation and canceled the portion for those who had returned earlier. I apologized for the same-day cancellation, but given the circumstances, I proceeded with canceling that portion. Personally, I did not feel the heat was as intense as it had been a few weeks earlier, but for this group it may have been quite difficult to bear.

To match their wish to minimize travel time and explore each spot slowly at their own pace, we made maximum use of taxis. At Rikugien and Kiyosumi Garden, they took few photographs, saying instead that they wanted to imprint the beautiful scenery in their memory, and they thoroughly enjoyed the views. They had a strong interest in Japanese culture, and at the Fukagawa Edo Museum they were very pleased to be able to experience the daily life of ordinary people during the Edo period. At the end, they expressed their gratitude for a wonderful tour and very generously offered their thanks.

    Before becoming a tour guide, I worked for a major steelmaking company as an engineer for many years. During my career, I lived and worked in both Germany and the United States for a total of five years. These experiences helped me understand different cultures and ways of thinking, which now helps me connect easily with guests from around the world.

    After retirement, I chose a second career as a tour guide because I truly enjoy meeting people from different countries and sharing Japanese culture, history, and daily life. I have been working as a guide for more than nine years and continue to enjoy every tour.

    I currently live in Tokyo, but I was born and raised in Kobe, near Osaka, and my family roots are in Kyoto. As a result, I have extensive knowledge not only of Tokyo but also of Kyoto, Osaka, and many other parts of Japan. I enjoy introducing both famous landmarks and hidden local gems that many visitors might otherwise miss.

    I am energetic, friendly, and very sociable. I always try to create tours that are relaxed, flexible, and tailored to my guests’ interests.

    Travel is one of my greatest passions, especially visiting hot spring resorts. I have visited more than 80 onsen destinations throughout Japan, giving me a deep appreciation of Japanese culture and regional traditions.

    Can You Take a Private Cruise Shore Excursion from Niigata East Port? A Licensed Guide's Report Once again, I accepted this assignment departing from Tokyo. Because the port of call was Niigata East Port, and because it took some time before the reservation for a private vehicle could be finalized even after I explained that booking a private vehicle would greatly improve convenience, I consulted with [Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.)](https://www.j-g-a.org/) many times. Thank you very much for your support. Niigata East Port is located far from the city center and is distant from any railway station, so even guides based in Niigata would likely face significant disadvantages in terms of transportation costs when taking on work at the East Port. Many guides based in Niigata are probably shifting to cruise bus guide roles at other companies where transportation costs are covered. The guests, regardless of these circumstances, look forward to enjoying their experience in "Niigata," so I sincerely hope that private tours will not be declined due to a shortage of guides. To that end, I would be grateful if [Japan Guide Agency](https://www.j-g-a.org/) would continue to consider providing transportation cost coverage from central Niigata to the East Port, as well as recruiting guides from outside Niigata Prefecture and subsidizing their transportation costs.

    Title: What's an Afternoon Private Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Meiji Shrine, Shibuya, and Shinjuku The guests were a group from Europe visiting Japan for the first time. Today's itinerary was decided through discussion with one of the guests. The group had already been active since the morning, so the tour started at 2:00 in the afternoon. Meiji Shrine was manageable since it involves walking through the forest, but the guests were already tired by Yoyogi Park, so we traveled by taxi from Shibuya onward. I took them to Parco as they had requested, but because it was during the Obon holiday, there were many domestic visitors as well and it was more crowded than usual, so it was a bit of a failure. I suggested revisiting it together with Takeshita Street on Monday. On the other hand, the observation deck at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building had few people, so it was good that I was able to explain about Tokyo there. The west exit of Shinjuku had become like a maze due to construction, and we struggled to reach Omoide Yokocho, so I felt bad for the already tired guests, which was a point of reflection. It ended up being an unsatisfactory tour from my own perspective as well. Since the group would be moving to Kyoto on Thursday, I gave advice on how to spend their remaining time in Tokyo until then.
