As they seemed to have an interest in art, they also visited the exhibition hall where the wall paintings are stored. They seemed to like the calm atmosphere of Nanzenji Temple. When I mentioned there was another beautiful garden, they also visited Tenjuan, and they seemed to enjoy this garden as well. They eagerly took many photos of the koi carp. Since I had been told in advance that this was a special trip, I gave them a small present, which delighted them greatly. As I had heard that the guests both like katsu, we enjoyed a katsu lunch together, and they said it was delicious. They seemed to like the view from Kiyomizu-dera Temple. At Yasaka Shrine, I explained the proper way to worship at a shrine, and they offered their prayers. After visiting Yasaka Shrine, as it was already past 15:00, I told them the tour would end here and asked what they would like to do next. They said they wanted to drink matcha, so I took them to a specialty tea shop, where we said goodbye.

    Hiro in Japanese means large or big. Although I’m neither large nor big, you can call me Hiro. How are you doing ?
    I lived in a city nearby Kobe city. Do you know Kobe ? Kobe is famous for Kobe beef and pearl. If you have not yet had Kobe beef, you should taste the authentic Kobe beef. It is very satisfying taste. But I have recently moved to a city in Kyoto prefecture, so I can be in Kyoto city in about one hour. By the way, I am a family of four. I have a son and a daughter. My son now works in Tokyo. I sometimes go to Tokyo to see him. Tokyo is a huge city, but too crowded, so it seems not to suit me. I seem to be better suited to a small city than a big one. Where do you live in ? How many families do you have ? If you like, please tell me about them. I worked in the quality assurance department of a pharmaceutical company and visited the factories of foreign affiliated companies, so I became interested in foreign cultures and obtained a qualification as an interpreter guide in 2015.

    I have been a guide for about eight years. During that time, I have guided in Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, Nara, Kochi and so on, although I could do little guiding work between 2020 and 2022 due to COVID-19. However, since last year, my guiding work has been back! So, I am happy to be able to meet different people again. My hobby is travelling, but sadly, I am not in a position to travel abroad easily at the moment due to the very weak yen, and I hope to travel abroad again when the situation eases a bit more.
    How many countries have you been to so far ? Which countries have you liked so far? Another hobby is watching sports – baseball and football. Do you like the baseball ? Do you know Otani, Japanese baseball player ? He has joined Dodgers in Los Angeles this year. I look forward to another successful year for Otani.

    By the way, what interests you in Japan? Food, history, scenery ? As far as tourist attractions are concerned, famous places are too crowded. If you like, I also would like to show you some less crowded places. Are you interested in experiencing something ? If you want to experience something, I can suggest an experience plan for you. If so, please contact me as early as possible. As for food, what kind of food do you like? There are many kinds of delicious food. Of course, you can get good food in fine restaurants, but you can also get good food in downtown restaurants. If you like alcohol, why don’t you try Japanese sake? It can range from light and fragrant to rich in flavor, so you’re sure to find a Japanese sake you like.

    My motto is “Be content with life.” However, I find myself complaining all the time. If you like, please tell me your motto. I want to treat all guests who visit Japan with the spirit of “Treasure every encounter” and guide them so that they can enjoy themselves and have good memories of Japan.

    Title: What Can You See on a 4-Hour Private Afternoon Tour of Osaka? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from Europe, touring Japan. Regarding the destinations and itinerary, during our prior consultation they said, "We don't know much about Osaka, so we'd like to leave it to you, our guide." Since this was a short 4-hour course taking place from the afternoon into the evening, I ultimately proposed a plan of "Osaka Castle → Dotonbori → Shinsekai," and the guests agreed. On the day, we met at the Hotel that towers over Nankai Electric Railway's Namba Station, the gateway to Osaka's Minami area. After introducing myself and briefly confirming the itinerary, we set off on the tour right away. As it was a short 4-hour tour, we used the subway for all transportation, avoiding aboveground transit that could be affected by traffic congestion. At Osaka Castle, we climbed up to the main keep and, while looking out in all directions, I explained Osaka's geographical position, the history of Japan's unification under samurai rule, and the course of its development as a commercial city, helping the guests understand the basic characteristics of Osaka. In Dotonbori and Shinsekai, I touched on Osaka as a city of commerce and food culture, as well as the warmth and disposition of the ordinary people of Osaka, deepening their understanding. However, since the guests had dinner scheduled at their hotel in the evening, it was a shame that they could not try Osaka's local foods such as takoyaki and okonomiyaki. Although it was a short time, it was a pleasure to guide them.

One of the guests mentioned traveling to Japan every year. They loved browsing for souvenirs, and spent a great deal of time in the souvenir shops at both Kotoku-in and Hasedera. At a music box shop near Hasedera, they purchased several music boxes, and thanks to the kindness of the shop staff, they were able to leave their purchases there while touring Hasedera. They were deeply moved by the eleven-faced Kannon statue at Hasedera. After returning to Minato Mirai, they wanted to visit an eyewear store, so I took them there and interpreted for them, helping to bridge communication with the staff about matters such as their prescription.

    Can You Do a Private Tour to Togakushi from Nagano? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visiting from North America. During prior arrangements via a messaging app, they made a strong request to visit Togakushi during their stay in Nagano City, so I designed a course that would let them fully enjoy the charm of Togakushi, knowing it would exceed the four-hour time limit. We were able to visit all of Togakushi — the ninja village as well as the Okusha (inner shrine) and Chusha (middle shrine) of Togakushi Shrine, a sacred site of Shugendo mountain asceticism — and the guests thoroughly enjoyed its solemn atmosphere. Togakushi requires two hours just for the round trip from Nagano, plus a minimum of four hours on site, so it is best set up from the start as a standalone course of six hours or more. In addition, the sightseeing limited express bus requires advance reservation and cannot be booked on the day, so this is a course where the guide is also expected to make such arrangements (purchasing tickets in advance).

    Since I completely retired from my position at a railway company and started being involved in the tour guide interpreter business, I have experienced almost all types of guiding through FIT, Long Group Tours, Cruises (Shore Excursions), Incentive Tours, Special Interest Tours (Railway Travel, Pilgrimages), Familiarization Tours (Sales Promotion Tours) etc.
    However, I noticed that I am not fully satisfied to only be a general guide who just manages a tour itinerary provided by tour agents/clients.
    High-end guests have sometimes requested me to answer some enquiries that are actually challenging to answer for Japanese nationals. However, I appreciated those because they provided such a challenge and I felt that they wanted to understand my sense of beauty/values as a guide concerning a new culture for them.
    Every time I host my guest I do my best to prepare the most appropriate information based on three travel elements (appetite, logistics, accommodation). Nevertheless, I decided to aim for higher guiding skills after I was motivated by senior guides whose guiding strategies and gestures were particularly impressive.

    What's a Private Tokyo Walking Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on the Imperial Palace and Yanaka The guests were visitors from Europe currently residing in Asia. Some of the group had visited Tokyo several times before and were very familiar with Japanese customs and Japanese cuisine. They listened attentively to the guiding about the Imperial Palace and the Tokugawa shogunate, and asked many questions. The East Gardens were not very crowded, but Tokyo Station was packed with both Japanese and international visitors. We had originally planned to go to Asakusa, but as the guests wished to enjoy a quiet setting and Japanese coffee, we changed course and headed to Yanaka. We were miraculously able to get into a well-known retro coffee shop, and the guests enjoyed its nostalgic and relaxed atmosphere. On the way to Yanaka Ginza, they were able to see the old-fashioned streets of Tokyo, which they were very happy about.

    What Does a Private One-Day Tour of Tokyo Cover? A Licensed Guide's Report on Meiji Shrine, the Imperial Palace East Gardens, and Asakusa The guests were visitors from North America. They arrived in Japan in October, traveled around Osaka, Kyoto, and other areas, and came to Tokyo the day before. They planned to stay in Tokyo for a few days before returning home. It was their first visit to Japan. I guided them to Meiji Shrine, the Imperial Palace East Gardens, and Asakusa. They listened attentively to my explanations and enjoyed themselves, taking photos at each location. Since they wanted ramen for lunch, we went to a ramen restaurant in Asakusa. After the tour, they wanted to see the Kabukiza Theatre, so I guided them to the Kabukiza in Ginza. I explained how to get back to their hotel, and we parted ways.

    Title: Can You Do a Private Kyoto Day Trip from an Osaka Cruise Ship? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting Japan from North America, arriving at Osaka Port on a cruise ship. Because the location of the cruise ship's shuttle bus arrival point was unclear, I managed to pick up the group by coordinating over the phone with the shuttle guide. As requested, we strolled through the Gion area and along the Philosopher's Path. At Eikando there was a very long line at the entrance and it was raining, so we changed our destination to Sanjusangendo, which turned out to be the right choice, as everyone gazed intently at the thousand-armed Kannon statues. The driver was also very cooperative, which was a great help.
