    What's a Private One-Day Kyoto and Arashiyama Tour Like for First-Time Visitors? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from Europe on their first trip to Japan. Their itinerary had taken them from Tokyo to Hida-Takayama and Kanazawa, then Nara and Hiroshima, and finally a few days in Kyoto, with a return flight home the next day, and they lamented that they would soon be "pulled back into reality." They were a pleasant group, easy-going and full of laughter and jokes, and they listened very attentively throughout the day. While we laughed at "funny" jokes all day long, they also shared interesting stories about politics, including how things had changed in Europe before and after certain major political events. Over a plate of curry rice, we also talked about how it seemed a new leader might be emerging in Japan. In Arashiyama there is a temple where I could share old and traditional folkloric stories of Japan, including the history of waka poetry, cherry blossoms, Obon, and the stone stacking at Sai-no-Kawara, and I was able to talk at length about what Arashiyama itself is — how there was once a detached palace known as Kameyama-dono, and how the town was laid out to resemble the ancient capital of Heian-kyo. We returned to Kyoto Station in the evening, and when I explained the standing-style udon shops inside the station, they decided to eat right away, so the three of us had curry udon, and they were impressed that the taste was wonderful for the price. We had eaten curry all day long, but I told them that before leaving they should try the pork buns from a famous shop (in the Kansai region they are called "butaman" rather than "nikuman"), and they said they would — and I am confident these guests will definitely try them. I hope it became a good memory for them.

    What's a Private Day Tour of Kyoto Like for Cruise Ship Guests from Osaka Port? A Licensed Guide's Report I guided the guests, who arrived on a cruise ship at Osaka Port, on a private day tour of Kyoto. At Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion), the guests were deeply moved by its beauty. After that, we moved by taxi to Nishiki Market. For lunch we enjoyed udon and soba noodles, and then headed to Gion. Since we could not find a large taxi able to seat the whole group, we ended up walking. Along the way, some of the guests were captivated by Pontocho, so I showed them around there. As it might have been better for those who found walking difficult to wait somewhere, but in the end we all walked together and I guided them through Gion and Fushimi Inari. The guests said they were glad to have seen a variety of different places.

    Hello, my name is Mizuho Yoshikawa. Please call me Mizu and my name means rice and water in Japanese.
    I’ve been a tour guide more than 200 times since the spring of 2023 in Kobe, Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Wakayama and Kochi. My tour is always original and new, depending on the guest’s preferences, encounters, seasons and weather.
    In Kyoto, one of my tours is to climb Mt. Kurama. It is about 1 hour from the city of Kyoto by train, it is a very quiet and beautiful mountain.
    In Osaka, which is called the kitchen of Japan, I am also in charge of food tour.
    In Nara, in addition to the Great Budda Hall, I guide guests to the temple with a really great view and Japanese wine, sake tasting.
    Every city has a unique charming point.
    The motto of my guiding is ” Ichigo Ichie” Once in a lifetime or seize the day. I learn this concept that the moment will never be the same again through tea ceremonies.
    I like a tea ceremony that is part of the traditional Japanese culture and embodies the spirit of “omotenashi” or hospitality. Through the tea ceremony, we can feel the spirit of “omotenashi” that has been passed down to us from ancient times.
    And I like to travel abroad and domestically, and I have been to 13 overseas countries and most of the prefectures in Japan. Traveling always gives me a new perspective, which is exciting and thrilling. Nowadays, we can learn a lot from the Internet, but traveling teaches us that it is important to have direct experience. When I travel, I feel that my five senses are infinitely expanded, and through my tour, I help all guests to have the same feeling in Japan.
    I was born and raised in Kanagawa Prefecture, which is next to Tokyo Prefecture in eastern Japan. When I was little, I could see Mount Fuji from my backyard. There was also a rice field nearby, and I grew up listening to the croaking of frogs. Listening to the frogs and seeing the mountains made me feel very calm.
    I moved to the city of Kobe, one of the Kansai areas in western Japan, which includes Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, and so on. I’m not from the Kansai area of western Japan, but I think that makes me sensitive to the differences between that area and the Kanto area, Tokyo, where I grew up.
    Speaking of Kobe, you might be thinking of Kobe beef. Of course you do. There are also other sake breweries in Nada in Kobe. You can also go from Kobe city to Himeji Castle, also known as the White Egret Castle, which was the first in Japan to be listed as a World Heritage Site in 1993.

    **Title:** What's a Full-Day Private Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Shinjuku, Meiji Shrine, Shibuya, and Asakusa **Body:** The guests were visitors from North America. Since their hotel was in Shinjuku, we first walked to Shinjuku Gyoen. They seemed to enjoy strolling through the Japanese garden within the park. Afterward, we moved to Meiji Shrine, where I gave a brief overview of Japanese history, explained the difference between shrines and temples, and introduced Emperor Meiji and Meiji Shrine. Then, while explaining the torii gate, the sake barrels, and the masugata, we paid our respects at the main hall. They also wrote their wishes on ema plaques and purchased omamori charms, and seemed to thoroughly enjoy the visit. In Shibuya, after seeing the scramble crossing and the Hachiko statue, we had ramen, which was very well received. We took the subway to Asakusa, and at the Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center I explained the origins of Asakusa and its main buildings. We then passed through Kaminarimon Gate, strolled along Nakamise while shopping, paid our respects at the main hall, and drew omikuji fortunes. After walking through the shopping street and taking a break, the tour ended at Asakusa Station. The guests had been a little worried about the amount of walking at the outset, but perhaps thanks to taking breaks as needed, they enjoyed the tour, and I was glad it concluded smoothly.

    Are Kochi Castle and Katsurahama Beach Doable with Limited Walking? A Licensed Guide's Private Tour Report The guests were a group visiting from Oceania. I had been informed beforehand that they preferred not to walk much, but they had many places they wanted to see, so we decided to simply give it a try and started the tour. At our first stop, Kochi Castle, one of the guests chose not to climb any of the steps and waited below. The other guest also found walking difficult, but curiosity won out, and they made it all the way up Castle Mountain and climbed to the second floor of the castle keep, which was very satisfying. However, having been kept waiting for 80 minutes, the guest below became quite displeased, and there was a slightly awkward atmosphere for a while. At the suggestion of the taxi driver, for the guest who could not go up to the castle keep, we drove up to the summit parking area of Mount Hitsuzan so they could look out over the city. Also, since it looked like we would arrive at Katsurahama Beach early, we stopped by Wakamiya Hachimangu Shrine, where they were able to photograph the statue commemorating Chosokabe Motochika's first battle.

    I was born and raised in Kochi city, and I worked for Kochi City Hall for nearly 30 years, so I think I know a lot about Kochi.

    Firstly, I can guide you to the Kochi castle. Most castles you can find in Japan have been rebuilt after fires, wars, or natural disasters. However, Kochi Castle is one of the very few castles that still have the whole structure of its original tower and the mail palace from the Edo period (1603–1868). This makes it especially valuable for understanding Japan’s history and traditional architecture. You’ll like it!

    Other major tourist sites are adventurous Ryugado limestone cave, Makino botanical garden, Chikurinji temple with historical stonesteps, Zenjibuji temple with the spectacular panoramic view, paper-making activity, Oboke gorge, Nakatsu gorge, Niyodo river with a historical bridge and so on.
    If you like sake, you can visit sake brewery, and if you are interested in walking local streets, you can stroll my neighborhood.

    Kochi is a small city, but it’s very popular among tourists for its beautiful nature and good food. I took my kids to rivers and mountains when they were little. If you are interested in those places, please ask me. And I know many good restaurants, too.

    Title: What Is a Private Hiroshima and Miyajima Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America. After traveling in Tokyo and Kyoto, they came to Hiroshima together. To match the high tide at Miyajima, they kindly agreed to move the meeting time 30 minutes earlier, and we started the tour at 8:30. Although rain had been forecast, fortunately it hardly rained at all, and they were very pleased with the weather. Miyajima was crowded with group tour visitors today, but thanks to starting our tour earlier, we were able to enter Itsukushima Shrine before the crowds. Since Kyoto had been very crowded and they had grown tired of the crowds, they said they were very happy about this. At Daishoin Temple, they listened to the explanations with great interest and took many photographs. After returning to the city by the World Heritage Sea Route, we went to my favorite okonomiyaki restaurant for lunch. There were few tourists, and since they like going to places where locals go, they said they liked it very much. They also found the okonomiyaki delicious and said they would try making it after returning home. Both of the guests were interested in history, and since one had majored in history at university, we walked around the Peace Park while I answered many of their questions and shared various stories. They were very interested in the story of Mr. Nomura, who was exposed to the atomic bombing in the basement of the Rest House, and they viewed the underground exhibit intently. One of the guests was deeply saddened by the harm done to children. After seeing the uniform of a victim of the student mobilization at the museum, they said it was difficult to see any more, and since they were interested in the paper cranes, I guided them only to the exhibit about Sadako at the end and then led them to the exit first. After that, I went around the museum with the other guest. I guided them through the G7 exhibition materials, then saw them off at their hotel and ended the tour. At the end, they thanked me for the tour and told me they considered me not only a tour guide but a friend, which moved me deeply. During the tour we talked a great deal about each other's families and shared photos, and it was a truly enjoyable time for me as well.

    Can You Do a Private Day Tour of Tokyo Ginza, Asakusa, and Meiji Shrine? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visiting Japan for the first time, arriving from North America. Before the tour they had traveled around Osaka and Kyoto. Advance coordination was a bit challenging as responses were limited, but they finally replied to the itinerary I sent shortly before the tour. They had no trouble with conversation, though since English was not their first language, this may have accounted for the limited responses. One of the guests often filmed videos on a smartphone, so I had to be careful not to lose sight of them during filming. In Ginza, the Golden Parade 2025 (a marching band event) was taking place, and quite a bit of time was spent filming it. When I asked in Asakusa whether they would like to eat something, one of the guests followed a vegetarian diet, so there were few options (even broth was a problem if it contained fish). For the time being they had some melon bread, and we hurried to Meiji Shrine to think things over at Forest Terrace. At Takeshita Street, we decided not to enter due to the enormous crowds, but there were many cosplayers preparing for Halloween, and the guests were delighted to be able to take photos. As it began to grow dark at Meiji Shrine, I omitted the explanation of the Imperial Palace, saw the guests off at Hibiya Station, and we parted ways.

    I am happy to introduce Japanese Manga/Anime cultures such as Akihabara, Nakano Broadway and Ghibli related sites.
    Travelling along the JR central line where guests can stopover at major animation studios (it is not accepted to visit the inside). The majority of animation studios such as TMS Entertainment, SUNRISE, A1 Pictures etc. are located in this area. Suginami Animation museum, Studio Ghibli and Ghibli Museum are also located.
    Guests can feel old houses in the Spirited Away scene in the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum.

    I can also provide a pilgrimage to the sacred place (shooting location) for the Shinkai Makoto animation movies such as Your name, Weathering with you, and Suzume.

    Another interesting feature is to visit authentic Japanese style pub meals such as Yakitori, Karaage, and Sushi etc.
    Asakusa Hoppy Street, Ameyoko Street, Yurakucho, Shimbashi, Shinjuku Golden gai, Shinjuku Omoide Yokocho are nice to visit.

    A Sake tasting at Sake Cellar can be an option.

    Kawagoe is an old town developed in the 17th century. It has very close relationship with the Edo central government. Kawagoe castle ruins, Kitain temple and 500 Buddha statues will welcome the guests.
    These areas are renovated and provide an old days atmosphere.
    Japanese style sweets food stands will fascinate the guests.
    Kawagoe is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

    Kamakura is the first Samurai worriers government established in the late 12th century.
    The Buddhism are introduced to Japan in the 6th century, and flourished at Nara and Kyoto later. A newer Buddhism sect such as Zen has well developed at Kamakura area.
    Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, Gigantic Buddha statue at Kotokuin Temple and the flower temple Hasedera Temple are must-see.
    Kamakura is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

    What Can You See on a 4-Hour Private Tokyo Tour? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America. One of them works as a designer, creating decorated fabrics and small handmade bags such as pouches. They had arrived in Tokyo the day before and were staying in Tokyo for just one day. From the next day, they planned to travel to Kyoto for several days to take part in fabric-making workshops. They wished to see as much of central Tokyo as compactly as possible within 4 hours. They asked many questions from the very beginning and were full of intellectual curiosity. For the East Gardens, we entered through the Kitahanebashi Gate and started from the ruins of Edo Castle. Entering this way and descending, rather than entering from the Otemon Gate, allows for a smoother guided route. After that, we went to Sensoji Temple. Since Nakamise Street was extremely crowded, we approached the main hall from a back street. I also guided them to Asakusa Shrine and explained the differences between Shinto and Buddhism. A ten-day event was being held in the precincts, with various stalls set up. As they had become a little hungry, we enjoyed the sweet potato and chestnut pie from Asakusa Mangando. It was crispy and very delicious. After that, we moved on to Meiji Shrine. I guided them through the precincts, and the tour came to an end.

    Title: What's a Private Walking Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Ginza, the Imperial Palace, Yanaka, and Asakusa We met at a very refined hotel on Marronnier Street in Ginza 1-chome, where boutiques such as Vuitton and Bulgari line the street. The guests were visitors from Oceania. They had come to Japan four times for family ski trips to Niseko and Furano. Although some of the guests had visited Otemachi many times for work, this was their first sightseeing trip. I was asked why the capital was moved from Kyoto to Tokyo during the Meiji period, and I explained that the northern domains had fought on the side of the shogunate, so the new government needed to be placed in Edo to keep them in check. At the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, I was asked why the keep of Edo Castle burned down for the third time, and I explained that a monk had tried to burn the kimono of a young woman who had died of a broken heart as a memorial offering, when a strong wind blew and the fire spread all the way to Edo Castle. Both of the guests really enjoyed the Asakura Museum of Sculpture in Yanaka. At Yanaka Cemetery, I was asked about sotoba, and I explained that they originally derived from towers built over the graves of kings in India, but since commoners could not build towers, they were simplified. At the Nitenmon Gate in Asakusa, I was asked whether what Zochoten is holding is a flashlight (it does indeed look somewhat similar), and I explained that it is a ritual implement used in ceremonies. One of the guests, who had worked at a bookshop, told me that many translations of Japanese books are published in Oceania, and showed me that they were currently reading "Butter" by Asako Yuzuki. One of the guests walked extremely fast — the first guest ever to walk faster than me.

    Title: What's a Private One-Day Cultural and Historical Tour of Kyoto Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America. They had told me they would be arriving in Kyoto from Osaka by Shinkansen, so I designated "the Shinkansen Central Transfer Gate" as our meeting point and sent them a photo in advance. I waited at the meeting point, but they did not arrive. Thinking they might have mistaken it for "the Shinkansen Central Exit," I contacted them via a messaging app. They said "yes," and sent a photo of where they currently were, but it was clearly the "Karasuma Central Gate." Since they appeared to have already exited the station from the Karasuma Central Gate, I decided to head there. Because they had sent me a photo beforehand, I was able to recognize them right away, which was fortunate. It seemed they had not taken the Shinkansen but had come by a local line instead. Once again, meeting up at Kyoto Station did not go smoothly. As a result, the actual tour start time became 10:50. I realized that meeting at Kyoto Station requires a bit more planning. As for our destination, the guests had said, "We'd like to visit somewhere where we can experience Kyoto's culture and history, and finish in Gion." I had originally been thinking of "Toji Temple, then Kenninji Temple," but since I felt bad about asking the guests to go all the way back to the Kintetsu line, I proposed Sanjusangendo, a relatively old Buddhist temple of the Tendai sect that is comparatively close to Kyoto Station. At Sanjusangendo, the guests were overwhelmed by the thousand Buddhist statues. Since there was a specially installed staircase allowing visitors to view the statues from a higher vantage point, I had them climb up. This was their first Buddhist temple in Japan, but they seemed to have visited shrines before, so there was a question about the difference between shrines and Buddhist temples. I explained, "Shrines belong to Shinto, and temples belong to Buddhism. However, Japan has a concept of the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism, and there is a shrine here as well." On the back side of Sanjusangendo, various forms of Buddhist statues are displayed, and since their forms differed from the thousand-armed Kannon seen in the front, one of the guests found it very curious. So I explained that there are four types of Buddhist figures: "Nyorai, Bosatsu, Myoo, and Ten." Since they had visited Osaka Castle the day before, I made a point of explaining the Taiko Wall built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who constructed Osaka Castle. Although it was not in the original plan, since they had been to Osaka Castle, I suggested a stroll to Toyokuni Shrine, which enshrines Toyotomi Hideyoshi. When I explained that a person is enshrined there, one of the guests seemed puzzled. So I explained that while natural objects were originally worshipped as deities, historical great figures are sometimes deified as well. When I asked if they would like to try praying, they said they would like to learn how, so I taught them. Unfortunately they did not have a coin with a hole in it, so I had them make an offering of 100 yen for both, counted as 50 yen plus 50 yen. Then we moved on. Since I certainly could not take newly-joined guests past a "severing-ties" shrine, we got off the bus at Kiyomizu-michi, walked along Yasaka-dori, and entered through the west gate. When I introduced the Yasaka Pagoda, they said they would come back to take photos after the tour ended. First there was a signboard depicting the dragon painting of the Dharma Hall, which they showed interest in. Once inside, they were moved by the Wind God and Thunder God screens and the beauty of the rock garden. When I told them they could enter the tatami room of the abbot's quarters, they happily went in, and one of the guests said, "We stayed in a tatami room at a ryokan in Hakone and loved the tatami very much." Then we went to the Dharma Hall. Both of them seemed to like the Twin Dragons painting, and one of them in particular was enthusiastically taking photos. One of the guests found it curious that the main image was different from the Buddhist figure seen at Sanjusangendo. I explained, "The main image of Kenninji is Shaka Nyorai, the founder of Buddhism. In the era when Sanjusangendo was built, the idea spread that Shaka Nyorai alone could not save people, and the thousand statues of the thousand-armed Kannon express the founder's wish that people might somehow be saved." Finally they tasted matcha, liked it, and purchased some. They received a 50-yen coin in change, and were delighted, saying, "Now we can make an offering at the shrine." Then we passed through Hanamikoji and out to Shijo-dori. Since the previous night's dinner had been too much and breakfast had been light, they seemed very hungry, and asked where would be a good place to have lunch. I recommended "a venerable soba restaurant next to Minamiza," and since I was heading in the same direction, I decided to accompany them while guiding them to souvenir shops and the like. The guests had not done much advance study of Japanese history or religion, but for that very reason I felt their questions were refreshing to me. When we parted, they thanked me and said, "If you ever come to visit, feel free to contact us!" The photo was taken in the garden of Sanjusangendo.

    What Is a Private One-Day Tokyo Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Tsukiji, Rikugien, and Yanaka The guests were a group visiting from North America. They were very friendly and also very considerate. They said the shops in the Ura-Harajuku area were very cool, and that the atmosphere reminded them of a place they knew overseas. At Tsukiji, they enjoyed the tremendous crowds and lively energy, happily eating yakitori and tamagoyaki. At Rikugien, they seemed to enjoy the beauty of the Japanese garden at their own pace.
