    What Is a Private Kanazawa Walking Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visiting Japan from Europe. They were both very talkative, and at times I found it hard to get a word in. We talked about how Portugal and Japan had exchanges in the medieval period, and about Portuguese words that were adopted into the Japanese language. They had a strong interest in and a favorable impression of Japanese society and culture, remarking that Japan pays attention to fine details, is well organized, and that even big cities like Tokyo have greenery. They also held positive views on the ways of thinking in Buddhism and Shinto. They seemed to love the beauty of the garden at Kenrokuen, and they found Shima very interesting to visit as well. Their overall evaluation was very high. On the day, the weather was fine and warm, making it a perfect day for a tour. Since the guests wanted to have lunch at Omicho, and because the weather was good and they were full of energy, we walked from Kazuemachi to Omicho on foot and said goodbye in front of the market.

    What Is a Private Miyajima and Itsukushima Shrine Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from North America, one of whom had originally lived in Tokyo and had invited neighbors along for a 10-day trip to Japan. Some of the guests were visiting Japan for the first time. There were many school-trip students that day, so the ferry over was crowded, and with some students shouting loudly, it was a slightly unsettled start. After we landed, I made a point of avoiding school groups and package tour crowds as much as possible and took a calmer route. Itsukushima Shrine was busy, but the guests were delighted when I showed them spots where the shrine and the torii gate could be seen clearly without many people around. One of the guests had relatives in Hiroshima and had visited Miyajima many times before, but told me they were happy to be visiting this particular place for the first time, which put me at ease. We were able to visit Daisho-in Temple just as several tour groups were leaving, so we could explore slowly and calmly. Everyone spoke excitedly about how much fun and how interesting it was to walk the corridor through the darkness, and they were moved by the many Buddhist statues and the beautiful scenery of the Henjokutsu Cave. The autumn leaves had not yet turned, but by taking the uncrowded Momijidani (Maple Valley) route, we were able to walk slowly through peaceful nature, and the guests said they felt very happy. We also met many deer and took photos with them. At a scenic cafe with few tourists, we were able to relax and chat at length. Everyone was a big fan of the Dodgers, and they showed me videos of Shohei Ohtani. The conversation also turned to the Peace Park they had visited the day before, and we talked together about peace and current politics. At the end of the tour, the guests told me they were truly glad they had chosen a private tour, as they were able to visit places they never would have reached on their own and to avoid the crowds. One of the guests said they planned to come to Hiroshima again next year and hoped we would meet again, and also said they wanted to recommend the tour to friends coming to Japan in the future, which made me very happy.

    What Is a Private Nagoya Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Nagoya Castle and Local Cuisine The guests were visitors from South America. We had been in contact via a messaging app, and they showed up about 20 minutes late. They had a wide range of interests and asked many questions. They took their time exploring Nagoya Castle in detail. For lunch, I suggested a local Nagoya specialty, and since they wished to try miso-nikomi, I guided them to it. They were very pleased. As they also spent a good amount of time exploring the underground shopping arcade and the department store food floor, we were no longer able to visit Osu as originally planned. This was agreed upon by the guests.

    Could You Do a Private Walking Tour of Shimonoseki and Chofu? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were interested in the legends of Emperor Antoku and Hoichi the Earless. The guests had eaten sushi and tempura before, but they were interested to experience dishes served in small bowls for the first time. At the Chofu Mori Garden, the guests enjoyed a matcha tea experience and were able to spend a quiet time with no other visitors around. In Chofu, the guests said they would like to see more old, temple-like buildings. The guests walked at a slower pace and seemed to find steps and taking shoes on and off a little difficult. Perhaps because there were many cruise ship tourists, it took a little time to catch a taxi at one location.

    Can You Do a Private Day Tour of Nagoya Castle, the Toyota Commemorative Museum, and Noritake Garden? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group of four visiting from North America. In their messages beforehand, they had expressed a wish to visit Nagoya Castle, the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology, and Noritake Garden, so I guided them in that order. Since the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology and Noritake Garden are within a 10-minute walk of each other, we were able to move smoothly between the sites. Regarding meals, since some of the guests could not eat meat or shellfish, I took them to the food court of an Aeon Mall, where a variety of shops are gathered, and they enjoyed a udon dish. During our conversation, we discovered that some of the guests were graduates of the University of Illinois, where I had also studied abroad, and had even lived in the same student dormitory I had used. This made our conversation very lively, and the guests seemed delighted.

    Title: What's a Full-Day Private Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Meiji Shrine, the Imperial Palace, and Hamarikyu Gardens The guests were a group of visitors from North America, on their first trip to Japan. Some of the guests had arrived in Japan a few days earlier and had already finished sightseeing in Kyoto, while others had arrived the day before the tour. After sightseeing in Tokyo, they planned to travel together through Southeast Asia, including Vietnam and Thailand. On the morning of the tour, when I entered the meeting point in the hotel lobby, the guests spotted me right away and called out to me. We started the tour with great enthusiasm for sightseeing. Before heading down into the subway entrance, I introduced nearby commercial facilities close to the hotel and convenient routes to reach them. Purchasing a good-value transit pass, along with an explanation of public transportation, also became one of our sightseeing activities in Tokyo. The Oedo subway line we boarded happened to be at the peak of rush hour, so the guests experienced a packed rush-hour train. Since it was just one stop, they enjoyed it as a unique first experience. At Meiji Shrine, the guests were deeply moved by the forest of the shrine, the birdsong, and the chrysanthemum flowers on display. They actively took part in the purification fountain and worship experiences, and at the Imperial Palace they admired the beautifully shaped pine trees that looked like bonsai. Afterward, we had originally planned to have a sushi lunch at Tsukiji Market, but since some of the guests were not fond of sushi, we decided to have a slightly early lunch somewhere around Tokyo Station. What everyone chose was Kamatake Udon. Since it was crowded, we split into two groups to be seated, and they enjoyed dishes such as a set of udon with beef tendon curry and tempura udon. At Hamarikyu Gardens, one of the guests waited on a bench near the entrance due to some swelling and slight pain in the legs. Some of the guests who had arrived the day before were also affected by jet lag and became sleepy, so we returned to the hotel a little earlier.

    What's a Private Walking Food Tour of Shinjuku and Shibuya Like in Tokyo? A Licensed Guide's Report The guest was a visitor from North America, visiting Japan for the first time and exploring Tokyo on their own for this private tour. By the day before, the guest had already visited the major tourist attractions in Tokyo, so for this tour they wished to see places recommended by a friend, especially spots related to food. The udon restaurant called "Shin," located a short walk from the south exit of Shinjuku toward Yoyogi, was a place I myself had not known about until I received the guest's list of interests. When I visited for a preliminary check, I waited an hour and a half to get in. On the day of the tour there was also a very long line, and the numbered ticket issued indicated a 90-minute wait, so the guest immediately decided to give up on it. This was a natural choice so as not to eat into the rest of our tour time, but simply catching a glimpse of how popular the place was left the guest feeling satisfied. Next we visited the basement food hall of the Takashimaya department store, where the guest seemed continually amazed and took many photos. After looking around at various things, the guest bought a few skewers of yakitori and some baked sweets. We sat on a bench next to the Busta bus terminal on the south exit side of Shinjuku Station and ate together. The weather was fine and it was not crowded, which was fortunate, and it was a refreshing time chatting together. The conversation ranged widely over shared experiences, and the guest also introduced their family through photos. The guest maintained a very youthful outlook, and when we saw the Shibuya Scramble Crossing and the Godzilla Head in Shinjuku, the guest got excited, saying "So cool!" The guest is now enjoying a somewhat more relaxed lifestyle. The day after this tour, the guest planned a day trip to Kyoto to join a cycling tour of the city, so I helped purchase Shinkansen tickets at the ticket office in Shibuya. Incidentally, the guest's visit to Japan happened to coincide with the visit of the U.S. President. The guest shared, as a funny story, an experience from the previous day when a bus trip to a place normally reachable in 20 minutes took about two hours.

    Can You Do a Private One-Day Tour of Tokyo Covering Odaiba, Shibuya, and Shinjuku? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors residing in North America. Before the tour began, I had them download Mobile Suica. Among the spots they wished to see, I first took them to Odaiba, which was the farthest. As one of the guests was a fan of anime, the Gundam statue was very well received. Afterwards, we visited Shibuya, where I knew a limited-time store for the manga "ONE PIECE" was open, so I guided them there as well. For lunch, they requested halal food, so I took them to a branch of a halal ramen restaurant on Center Street, part of a chain I had used before in Asakusa. Since we ended up spending a long time in Shibuya, I shortened the explanation in Harajuku. Finally, after touring some famous spots near Shinjuku's Kabukicho area, we parted ways in front of the guests' Hotel.

    I was born in Tokyo and was raised in the suburbs of Tokyo called Tama area. When I was in university, I majored in western dramas, so I am good at playing like an actor.
    I like reading, listening to the music, and walking. I belong to several walking clubs, and sometimes I guide the members around Tokyo.
    One of my strengths as a guide is that I know well about kombu, Japanese kelps. In December every year, I work at a traditional kombu shop in Tsukiji Fish Market. At that shop, I learned a lot of things related to kombu or other ingredients for washoku. I can explain the different characteristics of them to you.
    Also, I am familiar with Japanese flowers and plants. If you stroll around a Japanese garden with me, I am sure you will be able to enjoy beautiful flowers and unique plants in every season.

    Title: What Is a Private Kyoto Day Tour Like? Arashiyama, Bamboo Grove, and Zen — A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were from North America. They had known each other since school and, after many decades, happened to reconnect and now live together. Both were cheerful, easygoing, and friendly, and they listened attentively to my explanations. Their interest led to many questions, and they also shared some of their own stories, which made guiding them easy and very enjoyable. We had many conversations, especially over lunch. The guests seemed interested in zazen and meditation. Since we had not visited a Zen temple famous for its dry landscape garden that day, I ended up starting an impromptu talk about "what Zen is" at a soba restaurant. The guests were so receptive that I found myself talking at length while slurping my soba. We also got into a conversation about how middle names are decided in names, touching on religion, family lineage, and even some slightly taboo topics related to history, all shared kindly over cups of soba-yu (the water used to boil soba). The scenery from Togetsukyo Bridge, shown in the photo, moves everyone. Although it must be far smaller in scale than the Great Lakes of North America, there is something captivating about a landscape nurtured by a thousand-year-old capital. Today especially, the sun was dazzling and the wind was pleasantly cool, and the guests were very delighted with the view. After the bamboo grove, we were supposed to visit a foot bath spa, but the guests were tired from all the talking and decided to skip it, so we returned to the Hotel.

    Title: What's a Private Hiroshima Peace Park Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visiting Japan for the first time from North America. Some of the guests had traveled to Hiroshima, arriving late the previous night. The guests who made the booking on behalf of the group were especially interested in visiting the memorial monuments, and everyone in the group was deeply moved at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. Today gave the impression that there may have been the highest number of sightseeing buses of the season, and the guests were surprised to see so many elementary school students on school trips in the Peace Memorial Park. Fortunately, the timing for entering the museum happened to be excellent, allowing us to proceed quite smoothly, which was lucky.
