    What Is a Private Sendai and Matsushima History Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guest was a solo traveler from Europe visiting Japan for the fifth time, with extensive knowledge of Japanese history, which made this a very rewarding tour to guide. Since the guest wanted to learn about history, I built the guiding around the theme that "most of the main spots in Sendai and Matsushima are connected to Date Masamune," laying out the story bit by bit. The guest enjoyed the narrative, saying that "the dots connected into a line." The guest already had a transit IC card, so we decided to use that and did not purchase a loop bus ticket. Since the guest wanted to see local crafts and a Nanbu iron kettle, I guided them to a local craft shop specializing in kokeshi dolls. As a souvenir of the visit to Sendai, the guest bought a Date Masamune kokeshi doll for themselves. As a point of reflection on my guiding, I felt that I should always explain large landmarks right in front of us. For example, the memorial tower is large and eye-catching, so I realized I need to be conscious that guests want to know which era it dates from and whom it commemorates. I also forgot some basic facts—when I muttered to myself wondering how many petals the imperial chrysanthemum crest had, the guest ended up teaching me that it was sixteen. In Matsushima, the guest liked the sacred atmosphere of Oshima Island and the approach to Zuiganji Temple, and showed great interest in Zuiganji. After I guided them around Godaido Hall, the guest wished to see more of Matsushima, so we parted ways there. It was a truly enjoyable time for me as well, being able to join the journey of a young traveler who loves Japan and eagerly absorbs so much.

    Title: What Can You See on a Private One-Day Tour of Tokyo? A Licensed Guide's Report on Gotokuji, Meiji Shrine, and Asakusa The guests were a group of four visiting from North America. During the advance planning, they strongly requested Gotokuji Temple, along with Meiji Shrine, Takeshita Street, Nezu, Rikugien, and Asakusa, but since this was too much for one day, we agreed to remove Rikugien from the itinerary. We met in the morning, and on the way from Odakyu Gotokuji Station to Gotokuji Temple, it became clear that one of the guests could only walk very slowly. We eventually reached Gotokuji Temple, which was extremely crowded with international visitors. Since they very much wanted to buy a beckoning cat figure and a goshuin stamp book, this took quite a bit of time. On the way back, we used the nearby Setagaya Line to save time. Walking also took time at Meiji Shrine, so we had to drop Nezu from the plan. Instead, since one of the guests really wanted to see the Hachiko statue, we changed the itinerary to visit Shibuya. At Senso-ji Temple, once we reached the main hall, the guests mentioned they had a restaurant reservation, so we parted ways there. It seems they had made the reservation while walking around Senso-ji Temple. I found myself wondering what we would have done if we had gone all the way to Nezu, but since I adjusted to their wishes, it turned out well in the end.

    I had worked in the international business scene for over 40 years and traveled to North America and European countries over 1000 days.
    After I retired from the business, I traveled to most of the major sightseeing spots in all 47 prefectures in Japan.

    My guide is starting from a brief history of the site where I am going to guide. I usually add a briefing about Japanese culture based on religions, such as Shinto Shrine and Buddhist temples. A geographic background behind the history is also important.

    I am happy to introduce Japanese Manga/Anime cultures such as Akihabara, Nakano Broadway and Ghibli related sites.
    Travelling along the JR central line where guests can stopover at major animation studios (it is not accepted to visit the inside). The majority of animation studios such as TMS Entertainment, SUNRISE, A1 Pictures etc. are located in this area. Suginami Animation museum, Studio Ghibli and Ghibli Museum are also located.
    Guests can feel old houses in the Spirited Away scene in the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum.

    I can also provide a pilgrimage to the sacred place (shooting location) for the Shinkai Makoto animation movies such as Your name, Weathering with you, and Suzume.

    Another interesting feature is to visit authentic Japanese style pub meals such as Yakitori, Karaage, and Sushi etc.
    Asakusa Hoppy Street, Ameyoko Street, Yurakucho, Shimbashi, Shinjuku Golden gai, Shinjuku Omoide Yokocho are nice to visit.

    A Sake tasting at Sake Cellar can be an option.

    In addition to the above, I am available in the neighboring cities.

    Kawagoe is an old town developed in the 17th century. It has very close relationship with the Edo central government. Kawagoe castle ruins, Kitain temple and 500 Buddha statues will welcome the guests.
    These areas are renovated and provide an old days atmosphere.
    Japanese style sweets food stands will fascinate the guests.
    Kawagoe is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

    Kamakura is the first Samurai worriers government established in the late 12th century.
    The Buddhism are introduced to Japan in the 6th century, and flourished at Nara and Kyoto later. A newer Buddhism sect such as Zen has well developed at Kamakura area.
    Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, Gigantic Buddha statue at Kotokuin Temple and the flower temple Hasedera Temple are must-see.
    Kamakura is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

    What Is a Rainy-Day Private Kyoto Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Kinkaku-ji, Nijo Castle, and Sanjusangendo From the beginning, the guests had expressed that they preferred not to pack too much into the schedule, wanted to use public transportation, and hoped to visit Kinkaku-ji and Kiyomizu-dera. However, by the time we arrived at Kinkaku-ji, it was raining quite heavily, and one of the guests seemed to have difficulty walking on the stairs. Since Kiyomizu-dera requires a considerable walk from the bus stop and has many stairs inside, I felt it might be dangerous, so after we had seen Kinkaku-ji, I suggested changing our destination to somewhere with a roof. As a result, we decided to visit the indoor facility of Nijo Castle. Both guests were reading all the explanations very carefully without any prompting from me, which made it a little challenging to guide. That said, at the guardhouse, whose doors are usually closed, there was a reproduction using figures of Emperor Go-Mizunoo's visit to Nijo Castle, and they were delighted to see it. We also walked through the Ninomaru Palace. In summer it is hot, so I usually do not look too closely, but seeing it again today, the arrangement of the stones bordering the pond looked strikingly beautiful. I then suggested moving on to Sanjusangendo, which also has a roof. Since there are not many suitable places to eat around Nijo Castle, I suggested having lunch somewhere between Keihan Shichijo Station and Sanjusangendo. I had first thought of udon, but one of the guests disliked it. When I asked whether they liked curry, they said they did, so I decided to take them to a curry restaurant. They seemed very satisfied with the menu. At Sanjusangendo, I explained the general points of the front-side exhibits, but at the Twenty-Eight Attendants section, they were reading the explanations intently. At the back-side toshiya (long-distance archery) corner, one of the guests asked me various questions. In particular, they pointed out that the framed plaques listing the names of past champions had decorative patterns, something I had never noticed before, which greatly surprised me. After going around the hall, I thought we might stroll through the garden, but around 14:15 they said they would "walk back to the hotel." They asked me to show them the direction to the hotel, and since I was also heading to Kyoto Station, I decided to walk together with them to the hotel. Along the way, our conversation turned to working styles in North America and Japan's pension system. Before long we arrived at the hotel, and they thanked me, saying, "We had not thought of a plan in case of rain, so this was a great help." The photo was taken in front of the special exhibition at the guardhouse of Nijo Castle, but I apologize that it came out backlit.

However, walking was quite difficult for the group, so Kyoto, which involves a lot of walking, proved to be somewhat challenging.     What Can You See on a Private One-Day Tour of Eastern Tokyo? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America who were in Japan for the first time and planned to stay in Tokyo for several days. Since this was their situation, I suggested focusing on the eastern area of Tokyo for the day, and they agreed. In line with their wish to visit historical spots, I guided them to such places and helped them deepen their understanding of Japanese history. They were pleased, saying it would be helpful as they traveled to various regions afterward. However, as it was the final day of a three-day holiday weekend, every place was very crowded. They were especially surprised, and somewhat overwhelmed, by the crowds at the Pokémon Center. I advised them to visit again on a weekday, so they decided to give up on shopping for the day. The weather was also fine, and I believe they were satisfied with the tour overall.

    Can You Do a Private Temple and Shrine Tour in Nara? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America. In the correspondence before the tour, the request had been to "only view temples and shrines from the outside, and not to see any Buddhist statues," which left me a little puzzled. However, when we met and I asked the reason, the response was, "In a world where such terrible things are happening, I cannot believe in God. I am an atheist." When I explained things such as, "Buddhism is sometimes described as an atheistic religion," the guests showed a great deal of interest. At Kofuku-ji Temple, we visited three sites (the National Treasure Museum, the Eastern Golden Hall, and the Central Golden Hall).

I specialize in Nara because Nara is the unique place where in one day you can cover the history and religions of Japan from the ancient times to the post war era while enjoying rambling in the UNESCO World Heritage park, having communication with lovely deer, surrounded with the beautiful nature.

    After retiring from teaching I began guiding so that I can meet various people from various corners of the world with a variety of cultures and backgrounds. Each time I guide, I find it hugely rewarding because I learn a lot from my guests sharing the history, culture and all that I know about Nara, Kyoto and Osaka.
    I used to be a marathon runner, mountain climber and skier though I am not much of them anymore.
    What I especially recommend is to stay in Nara a couple of days and enjoy communicating with friendly deer while visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Nara in early morning, temples and shrines at night are well worth experiencing.

They mentioned that starting the next day they would be going on a long tour with a friend. At Meiji Shrine, the guest seemed impressed by the quiet and solemn atmosphere, which was very different from Shibuya. At the Imperial Palace, they listened with interest to historical explanations about the role of the Emperor, the Meiji Restoration, and the Edo Shogunate. At Senso-ji Temple, they listened with interest to explanations about the differences between temples and shrines and about Kaminarimon Gate, and they also purchased items such as sake cups as souvenirs along Nakamise Street.     What Does a Private One-Day Tour of Tokyo Look Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from Europe. They had already traveled to Osaka, Hiroshima, and Kyoto, and Tokyo was their final destination. We first headed to the Tsukiji Outer Market near their hotel. The guests said they loved seafood, but since it was right after breakfast, they planned to actually eat there another day, so I introduced the main shops and had them prepare for a later visit. We then went around Namiyoke Shrine and Higashi Honganji Temple in the outer market area, where I once again explained the differences between Buddhism and Shinto, and talked about how each has influenced Japanese culture. Even though they had already visited many temples and shrines, they were delighted to have gained new insights. After the Imperial Palace and Nijubashi Bridge, we headed to Meiji Shrine. As it was Culture Day, various events and ceremonies were being held, and they were especially moved to witness a traditional ritual up close. Finally, we headed to Shibuya. Since the guests very much wanted to visit a ramen shop and the Pokémon Center, I explained their way back and concluded the tour there.

    Title: What Is a Private Himeji Castle Walking Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report Today's guests were visitors from North America on their first trip to Japan. A number of things happened before the tour even began. The tour had originally been scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m. While the guide was having breakfast at home, a message arrived from the guests saying, "We are on the train now and will arrive at Himeji Station at 9:00 a.m." The guide replied that reaching Himeji by 9:00 would not be possible from home and asked them to wait at a cafe, then hurried toward Himeji. The guide arrived at Himeji Station at 9:19, but the guests were not at the meeting point. When the guide contacted them via a messaging app, they replied, "We are still on the train, heading to Himeji Station." It turned out the guests had taken a rapid train from Osaka toward Himeji. This rapid train becomes a local train west of Akashi Station, stopping at every station all the way to Himeji, which takes longer. In the end, the guests arrived at the meeting point at 10:00 a.m. They were carrying a large suitcase, as they planned to stay at a hotel in Himeji that night. For this reason, we first went to the hotel to check in, and then began the tour. After the tour started, we visited the Castle View area, Himeji Castle, and Kokoen Garden. As it was a national holiday, there were many tourists, and the ticket booth and the main keep of Himeji Castle were extremely crowded, so sightseeing took quite a while. By the time we reached Kokoen Garden it was already somewhat late, but since the guests also wished to take part in a tea ceremony, we joined it. After Kokoen Garden, the guests said they wanted to visit the shopping arcade, so I guided them there. Overall it turned out to be a rather long tour, but when I asked the guests for their impressions, they said it had been wonderful.

    Can You Do a Private Day Trip to Kanazawa on a Rainy Day? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from Europe. When I arrived at the Hotel 15 minutes early, they were already waiting in the lobby, so we started the tour right away. Since the forecast called for occasional heavy rain, I conducted the tour while checking the rain cloud radar. I made an effort to use buses as much as possible to avoid the rain. Fortunately, it did not rain while we were at Kenrokuen, so it turned out to be the right decision to switch the order of Kenrokuen and Kanazawa Castle. At the Higashi Chaya District, I introduced the Geiko show (Meet the Geiko show) at the Asanogawa Enyukan, and they made a reservation for it. For lunch, I guided them to a ramen restaurant near Korinbo, which they seemed to like very much.
