    Title: What Can You See on a Private One-Day Tokyo Tour? A Licensed Guide's Report The guest was a visitor from North America who had arrived in Japan the previous day and planned to join a group tour covering various parts of Japan (Tokyo, the Fuji Five Lakes, Hakone, Kyoto, and more) for about two weeks starting the next day. Originally the plan had been for more of the party to attend, but another traveler's flight was cancelled, delaying their arrival, so they were unable to join. Since Asakusa and Meiji Shrine were included in the group tour itinerary, today I guided the guest to Tokyo Skytree, the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, Ueno Park, and the Tokyo National Museum. Although the weather was unfortunate with a light drizzle, the view from Skytree could still be enjoyed reasonably well. The guest had a strong interest in Japanese culture and history and asked many questions. At the Tokyo National Museum, the guest viewed the exhibits with great enthusiasm. At the end, I explained how to return to the hotel from the Tokyo National Museum, and we parted ways there.

    What Is a Private One-Day World Heritage Tour of Okinawa Like? A Licensed Guide's Report [Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.)](https://www.j-g-a.org/) guide led a private one-day tour of Okinawa for a group visiting from North America. The weather was between 26°C and 30°C, clear and sunny, making it a perfect summer day very typical of Okinawa. The guests were all steady on their feet and had no trouble climbing stairs. There were questions throughout the day, including while traveling between sites, which gave me many opportunities to share the appeal of Okinawa and Japan. At the first stop, Naminoue Shrine, I was able to explain how to worship at shrines in Japan and the differences between shrines and temples. The guests were delighted to see three World Heritage sites: Sonohyan-utaki Ishimon, Tamaudun, and Shikinaen Garden. There were no injuries and no one became separated from the group, and the guiding duties were completed safely.

    What Is a Private Half-Day Walking Tour of Takayama Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visiting Japan for the second time, traveling from Asia. On their previous trip they had visited Sapporo, Tokyo, and Osaka, and this time they were on a 21-day rental car drive, arriving at Chubu Airport and departing from Fukuoka Airport, with Takayama as one stop along the way (other destinations included Nagoya, Kanazawa, Kyoto, Okayama, Hiroshima, and Fukuoka). Since the guests enjoyed shopping, we also visited a general goods store, a mounting/framing shop, and a matcha tea shop. In the afternoon they had arranged a separate guide for a sake brewery tour, so I escorted them to the meeting point at Nakabashi. It seemed they had arranged guides at nearly all of the destinations above, and I was impressed by their energy. The guests showed a strong interest in the Takayama Festival and its festival floats, saying they hoped to come and see it someday.

    Since I completely retired from my position at a railway company and started being involved in the tour guide interpreter business, I have experienced almost all types of guiding through FIT, Long Group Tours, Cruises (Shore Excursions), Incentive Tours, Special Interest Tours (Railway Travel, Pilgrimages), Familiarization Tours (Sales Promotion Tours) etc.
    However, I noticed that I am not fully satisfied to only be a general guide who just manages a tour itinerary provided by tour agents/clients.
    High-end guests have sometimes requested me to answer some enquiries that are actually challenging to answer for Japanese nationals. However, I appreciated those because they provided such a challenge and I felt that they wanted to understand my sense of beauty/values as a guide concerning a new culture for them.
    Every time I host my guest I do my best to prepare the most appropriate information based on three travel elements (appetite, logistics, accommodation). Nevertheless, I decided to aim for higher guiding skills after I was motivated by senior guides whose guiding strategies and gestures were particularly impressive.

    Title: What's a Private Art and Design Walking Tour of Tokyo's Omotesando, Shibuya, and Daikanyama Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting Japan for the first time from North America. Before arriving, they had expressed a wish to explore areas with fewer inbound tourists, focusing on contemporary art and trendy cafes, so I proposed the itinerary above. Since we arrived before the shops opened, I began Omotesando as an architecture-viewing tour, showing and explaining buildings such as Prada, Miu Miu, Boss, Bottega Veneta, and Omotesando Hills. After the shops opened, I took them to several galleries and boutiques such as Visvim, then we walked to Shibuya via Cat Street. In Daikanyama we looked at art-related books at T-Site, took our time viewing art galleries and art cafes, and then headed to the Starbucks Reserve (R) Roastery. As they wanted to return to Daikanyama rather than the hotel, we walked along the Meguro River and returned to Daikanyama via Nakameguro before ending the tour. I found we had a lot in common and enjoyed good conversation, and it was a pleasure to guide the guests through Daikanyama, an area I had often visited both privately and professionally.

    Title: What Is a Private Miyajima Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from Oceania. They had arrived in Japan two days earlier and it was their first trip to Japan. As soon as they stepped off the bullet train, they greeted me with big smiles and started talking to me right away. I believe the information I had provided beforehand helped make this possible. In our prior communication, the guests had expressed a wish to have ramen for lunch, but while walking along the mountain paths of Miyajima, they seemed to become interested in oysters and changed to the set menu below. I introduced them to a restaurant where they could order using an English-language tablet. They appeared very satisfied, which was a great help. Unlike the previous day, it was a mild, spring-like day, and we had a relaxed and enjoyable tour.

    What Is a Private Old-Town Walking Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report I guided guests visiting from North America. Beforehand, I had introduced three options — old-town streetscapes, a mix of styles, and major tourist spots — and they said they would love to see the old townscapes. While we were exchanging these messages, they suddenly told me they had forgotten to notify me about a hotel change, so the accommodation was changed at the last minute. We started at Fukagawa Fudodo, where the guests purchased goma prayer sticks for "good health" and "warding off misfortune," wrote their names and ages, took commemorative photos, walked once around the hall, and then watched the goma fire ritual. They also had their belongings purified along the way, and they were delighted to experience a traditional Buddhist ceremony from a front-row spot with a full view of everything. That said, perhaps because they could see the whole thing, there was none of the usual startling moment, which left me personally feeling a little wistful. At the next stop, Kiyosumi Garden, they were captivated by its beauty and took many photos, though it was a shame that it started to rain and we had to take temporary shelter for a while. Still, since they had been looking forward to the autumn foliage, they made sure to photograph the leaves that had just started to change color (at Lake Kawaguchiko they had been hoping to see a snow-capped Mount Fuji together with autumn leaves). Because there were requests to eat, to find an extra-large rain jacket, and to exchange currency, we headed to Ameyoko. At Montbell they found an XXL item they liked, but gave up on it because the chest size was too large; they were pleased that the exchange rate was two yen better than in Ginza; for lunch, to save time, they finished a meal at a Matsuya they happened to spot; and at Futaki-ya, which they had only intended to pass through, they ended up buying lots of sweets — thoroughly enjoying Ameyoko. At Jogyo Bosatsu, one of the guests scrubbed the back for the hips and another scrubbed the feet with a brush after getting blisters from wearing brand-new shoes for the trip. Since the guests did not seem particularly interested in history, I kept our visit to Ueno Park brief. They mentioned that among their acquaintances it was trendy to give dogs Japanese names, and they knew that "inari" refers to a fox. While riding the train, one of the guests was always playing Pokémon GO, proudly showing me the screen and saying, "In nine years I've already caught over 100,000 Pokémon and traveled 50,000 km." When I pointed out the two Pokémon manhole covers in Ueno Park, they happily said, "I'd like to photograph them when I go to other places too," and took pictures. After that, we continued along my usual route from Yanaka to Nezu Shrine, and they liked the atmosphere so much that they said, "Let's come back again when we visit the Tokyo National Museum," checking the photos and locations of several shops such as Kayaba Coffee, Yuga-an, and Nonbiri-ya. They were also very curious about Ogyo-ko, and when I said I was too scared to ever go in, they innocently asked, "Why?" and, finding its unique appearance amusing, took photos. They loved the old townscape with few foreign tourists, giving it the highest rating of the day and thanking me with, "Thank you for bringing us here." They were lovely guests.

    What's a Private Family-Friendly Kyoto Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report Today I guided the guests, a group visiting from North America. Some of the guests had their own cameras and the whole group took many photos together, which made them a lovely group to be with. Early in the morning, the Togetsukyo Bridge was not crowded, and they enjoyed taking photos. On the driver's recommendation, we visited Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple, and I was very surprised to find it overflowing with international visitors. Kinkaku-ji was relatively uncrowded today, which made it easy to get around, and that was a pleasant surprise. At the lunch restaurant, they were delighted because they enjoyed udon broth. At Fushimi Inari Taisha, some of the guests earnestly counted the number of torii gates, which was charming. Since they planned to visit a sword shop afterward, I took them there directly and we parted ways. I believe they enjoyed the tour.

    Title: What's a Private Tsukiji Fish Market and Tuna Auction Tour Like in Tokyo? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from Oceania, in Japan for a trip. At the group's request, the tour was arranged to prioritize the preferences of some of the guests. Everyone watched the tuna auction with great interest and enjoyed the lively atmosphere. During the sushi breakfast after the auction viewing, the guests were delighted, saying it was the best sushi they had ever eaten. One of the guests mentioned not being fond of mackerel, but after tasting fresh mackerel, they were surprised by how delicious it was. At the Tsukiji Outer Market, I first guided the group to a wholesaler's shop, where a shop happened to be preparing to butcher a whole fresh tuna, so the guests were able to see raw tuna up close, which they enjoyed. I also explained the different cuts of another tuna that had already been butchered, and I believe they came to understand how tuna is eaten. At a shop specializing in dashi (soup stock), the guests tasted three types of dashi and were pleased to purchase a premium dashi. Because of the hotel checkout timing, the group wished to return to the hotel by 8:00, so I guided them back to the hotel and concluded the tour.

    Title: What Is a Private Tsukiji and Asakusa Family Tour in Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from North America, who came to Japan during a school break. The guests were friendly, polite, and very easy to guide. Although they attended a school where French was the primary language and seemed more comfortable in French, they had no trouble with English and spoke only English even among themselves while with me. I had asked in advance for children's Suica cards to be purchased at the airport, which made guiding on the day very smooth. I had been a little concerned about whether one of the younger members of the group would be able to walk the whole way, but they never complained once during the tour. When I praised them for doing so well, they told me they had practiced walking back home in preparation for the trip to Japan. At the guests' request, I showed them around Tsukiji and Asakusa. Along the way, I helped them purchase Shinkansen tickets at Ueno Station. To make sure the tour was enjoyable, we visited a sweets shop in Tsukiji, and in Asakusa we went to a character goods store and a goldfish scooping stall. One of the group had a peanut allergy, so I made sure to check at every shop we visited. The goldfish scooping was a big hit, and they took the challenge very seriously, managing to catch a goldfish successfully even though it was their first time. At first I had thought we might part ways in Asakusa so the group could have lunch on their own, but as it was the first day of sightseeing, they seemed tired and said they wanted to return to their accommodation. I explained the way back to the Akasaka area and said goodbye at the ticket gate of Asakusa Station.
