What Is a 6-Hour Private Kyoto Tour Like by Public Transport? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from Oceania. Although it was their first visit to Japan, they had done thorough research in advance and decided on the itinerary by discussing their preferred destinations with the guide via a messaging app. They initially had many places they wished to visit, but since we used public transportation, they understood that within a 6-hour range we could realistically cover only three to four locations, and we set off. When I asked about their lunch preference, they said they wanted to try the kind of curry rice that Japanese people eat, so I took them to a curry restaurant we found along the way, and they were very pleased. They had also strongly wished to visit Sanjusangendo, which inbound visitors do not often go to, and they were very delighted with it, so I believe they enjoyed a fulfilling day. Along the way, I also advised them on how to get to Kurama-dera, one of the places they hoped to visit during the rest of their stay in Kyoto, as well as how to purchase and board the Shinkansen from Kyoto Station to Tokyo, and I received words of gratitude.

Since I completely retired from my position at a railway company and started being involved in the tour guide interpreter business, I have experienced almost all types of guiding through FIT, Long Group Tours, Cruises (Shore Excursions), Incentive Tours, Special Interest Tours (Railway Travel, Pilgrimages), Familiarization Tours (Sales Promotion Tours) etc.
However, I noticed that I am not fully satisfied to only be a general guide who just manages a tour itinerary provided by tour agents/clients.
High-end guests have sometimes requested me to answer some enquiries that are actually challenging to answer for Japanese nationals. However, I appreciated those because they provided such a challenge and I felt that they wanted to understand my sense of beauty/values as a guide concerning a new culture for them.
Every time I host my guest I do my best to prepare the most appropriate information based on three travel elements (appetite, logistics, accommodation). Nevertheless, I decided to aim for higher guiding skills after I was motivated by senior guides whose guiding strategies and gestures were particularly impressive.

What Does a Private Tokyo Tour with a Licensed Guide Look Like? A Guide's Report The guests were visitors from Europe, and it was their first time in Japan. After sightseeing in Tokyo, they planned to visit Hiroshima, Kyoto, Osaka, and Hakone. At Meiji Shrine, they appeared impressed by the quiet and solemn atmosphere, which was greatly different from Shibuya. At the Imperial Palace, they listened with interest to historical explanations about the role of the Emperor, the Meiji Restoration, and the Edo shogunate. At Senso-ji Temple, they listened with interest to explanations about the differences between temples and shrines, as well as the Kaminarimon Gate. Since I accommodated the guests' wishes as requested, I believe they were satisfied.

I am Seizo Kamiuto, National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter (English). I was born in Kagoshima City in Kyushu (Southern part of Japan) and grew up there until the graduation from a high school. I came to Tokyo to enter a University in Tokyo and since then, I have lived in Tokyo for more than 40 years and therefore I know Tokyo and its suburbs and Kagoshima City very well. After retiring from an IT company, I have been working as a Guide Interpreter of English since March 2018. I have guided many overseas guests to the popular sightseeing spots in Tokyo, Kamakura, Mt. Fuji area (Kawaguchiko Lake etc.), Hakone, Nikko, Yokohama, Kawagoe and Kagoshima and so on. I have received good reviews from many guests. I can explain the history and the culture of Japan in detail. I look forward to an opportunity to guide you in Japan. Thank you. Seizo Kamiuto

    Tour Itinerary

    • 0930 Meet at Conrad Tokyo (8 min from JR/Metro Shimbashi Station)
    • 0950 Tsukiji Outer Market – Early lunch with sushi at Sushizanmai Annex?
    • 1130 Tokyo Skytree, Solamachi
    • 1330 Asakusa, Kaminarimon, Nakamise, Senso-ji Temple, Asakusa Shrine
    • 1440 Ueno, stop for photos with the great Kanzakura cherry blossoms below the Saigo Takamori statue, Ameyoko
    • 1500 Stroll through the Akihabara Electric Town
    • 1530 Tour ends
    • Since my route home is the same, I'll see them off to Shimbashi, and after explaining the route to Odaiba and TeamLab Planets they plan to visit next, we part ways

Title: What's a Private One-Day Tokyo Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Skytree, Asakusa, and Akihabara The guests were a group visiting from North America. One member had arrived a couple of days earlier after traveling through other parts of Asia, while the others arrived the previous afternoon on their first visit to Japan. One of the guests had lived near Naha in Okinawa for a few years long ago. They planned to spend a few days in Tokyo, then travel to Kyoto, Osaka, and Hiroshima, before heading to Okinawa to spend several days on Sesoko Island in the central area and to look for the town where they had once lived. Since one of the guests has celiac disease, I gave them a gluten-free soy sauce to carry with them. At Sushizanmai, everything except salmon roe, conger eel, and rolled egg was free of additives, so they were able to enjoy their meal with this soy sauce. Because the meal took some time, we first visited Skytree, for which a 12:00 reservation had been made (they had also purchased a ticket for the guide). After Senso-ji Temple, although it was not originally planned, we enjoyed the large Kanzakura cherry blossoms below the Saigo Takamori statue in Ueno, and then headed to Akihabara at the request of one of the guests. Their interest was in old game consoles and manga, so they were able to browse a bit, and I also introduced and explained Nakano Broadway. Today they are going to Odaiba and TeamLab Planets. Tomorrow they plan to visit Mount Fuji.

I had worked in the international business scene for over 40 years and traveled to North America and European countries over 1000 days.
After I retired from the business, I traveled to most of the major sightseeing spots in all 47 prefectures in Japan.

My guide is starting from a brief history of the site where I am going to guide. I usually add a briefing about Japanese culture based on religions, such as Shinto Shrine and Buddhist temples. A geographic background behind the history is also important.
    My course includes 4 to 5 (in 6 hours) sites from the following depending on where I will pick the guests up;
    – Senso ji Temple
    – Kappabashi Kitchenware Market
    – Tokyo Skytree
    – Ueno Park
    – Nezu Shrine
    – Imperial Palace outer park
    – Tokyo Central Station, Marunouchi historic district
    – Tsukiji Fish Market
    – Koishikawa Korakuen Garden
    – Ginza
    – Odaiba
    – Hama Rikyu Garden
    – Shinjuku Gyoen Garden
    – Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building
    – Roppongi
    – Meiji Shrine
    – Harajuku & Takeshita Street
    – Shibuya
    – and Any of your interest.

I am happy to introduce Japanese Manga/Anime cultures such as Akihabara, Nakano Broadway and Ghibli related sites.
Travelling along the JR central line where guests can stopover at major animation studios (it is not accepted to visit the inside). The majority of animation studios such as TMS Entertainment, SUNRISE, A1 Pictures etc. are located in this area. Suginami Animation museum, Studio Ghibli and Ghibli Museum are also located.
Guests can feel old houses in the Spirited Away scene in the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum.

I can also provide a pilgrimage to the sacred place (shooting location) for the Shinkai Makoto animation movies such as Your name, Weathering with you, and Suzume.

Another interesting feature is to visit authentic Japanese style pub meals such as Yakitori, Karaage, and Sushi etc.
Asakusa Hoppy Street, Ameyoko Street, Yurakucho, Shimbashi, Shinjuku Golden gai, Shinjuku Omoide Yokocho are nice to visit.

A Sake tasting at Sake Cellar can be an option.

In addition to the above, I am available in the neighboring cities.

Kawagoe is an old town developed in the 17th century. It has very close relationship with the Edo central government. Kawagoe castle ruins, Kitain temple and 500 Buddha statues will welcome the guests.
These areas are renovated and provide an old days atmosphere.
Japanese style sweets food stands will fascinate the guests.
Kawagoe is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

Kamakura is the first Samurai worriers government established in the late 12th century.
The Buddhism are introduced to Japan in the 6th century, and flourished at Nara and Kyoto later. A newer Buddhism sect such as Zen has well developed at Kamakura area.
Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, Gigantic Buddha statue at Kotokuin Temple and the flower temple Hasedera Temple are must-see.
Kamakura is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

I am also happy to develop any other site the guests have interest.

What Is a Private Nikko Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from South America. Since one of the guests mainly spoke Spanish, the other translated as needed throughout the tour. The guests arrived on a train nearly an hour earlier than the scheduled tour start time, so we began and finished early. There were not many large tour groups at that time of year, and things went smoothly except for waiting for the next slot at Yakushido Hall. In the first half, I explained things in detail, including some conceptual background, and because of the lunch reservation time, our visit to Futarasan Shrine was rather quick. In the second half, however, the guests enjoyed a more relaxed pace that included some shopping.

Title: What Is a Private Hakone Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The tour time was shortened, but it was an enjoyable trip filled with laughter from beginning to end. Although it was cloudy, we were fortunate to catch a brief glimpse of the summit of Mount Fuji at Owakudani. The guests also tried the famous black eggs. The boat was crowded, so we relaxed in a special cabin. At Donburi Chaya, the guests enjoyed a Japanese meal of soba. At Maruyama Bussan, the guests enjoyed the presentation and did quite a bit of shopping. One of the guests had visited this place ten years earlier and purchased a secret puzzle box here, but had lost the instruction manual on how to open it. When this was mentioned, the shop kindly provided a new instruction manual. Throughout the itinerary, I made sure to minimize walking and took care to look after the well-being of the guests.

They arrived from Tokyo by bullet train and returned to their hotel in Tokyo after the day trip. It was their first time visiting Japan. What Is a Private Miyajima and Hiroshima Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from North America. During our pre-tour communication, they mentioned an interest in bird photography, so I researched in advance the types of birds that can be seen around Miyajima and Hiroshima in early spring, and introduced them during the tour. They showed great interest in topics related to nature and wild birds, and our conversations flowed easily. When I noticed that one of the guests was walking with a slight limp, I checked in, and adjusted the originally planned route to prioritize places with elevators and escalators, guiding with attention to safety. On Miyajima, I attempted to use a taxi, but vehicles were hard to find that day, so we used shortcuts to reduce the walking distance and proceeded at a comfortable pace. Since the guests did not seem particularly focused on the history related to the atomic bomb, I gave a concise explanation at the Peace Park and instead allowed more time to enjoy strolling and taking in the scenery. Throughout the tour, we were able to proceed in a calm and pleasant atmosphere, sharing a relaxed time centered on topics of nature and photography.

Originally, I’m a cycling guide doing cycling tours all over Japan.
But, already done Hiroshima & Miyajima tour more than 400 times.
I traveled many countries in my younger days. I traveled Europe, US, China, India, US, Mexico, Peru Australia, NZ, and so on.
I decided to use this experience to become a guide.
I’m afraid but no tipping required, because cycling guides are not allowed to have tipping in my association. And you do not need to pay for my lunch, because my lunch is prepared by our group.
Please do not hesitate to ask me anything, I’ll change the plan according to your requests.

Title: What Is a Private One-Day Tokyo Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Meiji Shrine, the Imperial Palace, and Asakusa The weather was good and the tour proceeded smoothly. During the briefing after the meet, the guests said they wanted a Welcome Suica, so we bought one at Shinjuku Station and started from there. At Meiji Shrine, I received a great many questions about religion and Japanese culture and customs. Many photos were taken. At the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, cherry blossoms and camellias were in bloom, and many photos were taken. In the gardens, long-finned koi could be seen. In Asakusa, I received questions about the wartime air raids and the five-story pagoda. I was treated to rice cakes and drinks. On Takeshita Street in Harajuku, the guests showed interest in various things and said, "We'll stay here for a while, so this is fine," and the tour ended. A tip was received.

Title: What Is a Private Family Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Hamarikyu, Tokyo Tower, Shibuya, and Gotokuji I guided a group visiting from North America. It was a celebratory trip arranged through a support organization, and I guided them to the places the guests themselves had chosen. At Hamarikyu Gardens, the plum blossoms were still in bloom and the rapeseed flowers were beautiful. At the Nakajima Teahouse, the guests looked lovely seated together on the red felt mat, so I took a photo for them. For lunch, the guests enjoyed items such as Mos Burgers and katsudon at the food court at Tokyo Tower. It was memorable that one member of the group, who usually feels afraid in busy areas, was able to move around on their own on the souvenir shop floor of Tokyo Tower, which delighted and surprised the group. In Shibuya, I took them to the 12th floor of Scramble Square, where we looked down at the crossing from above. Toward the end, the guests seemed quite tired, but we took the Setagaya Line to Gotokuji Temple. I had not realized that the counter for goshuin and other items closed at 15:00, so we were unable to buy the cat figurines. The guests did not mind much, but I reflected on it. It was a very calm and gentle group, and being told by one of the guests that it had been a good tour truly touched my heart.

What's a Full-Day Private Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from North America. They had been friends since their university days and were very enjoyable to be with. The day before, they had enjoyed teamLab and a food tour. Since they had many plans during their stay in Tokyo, they mainly wanted to see the highlights, but as the mimosa and cherry blossoms at Kuramae Shrine were just at their best, I took them there as well. Lunch was tonkatsu, and they also ordered sake and were very satisfied. After Asakusa, we stopped by Ginza briefly, just to check the locations of Mitsukoshi, Wako, and Uniqlo before heading back.
