    Title: What's a Half-Day Private Tour of Arashiyama and Kinkaku-ji in Kyoto Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from Europe. It was their first time in Japan. On this four-hour afternoon tour, I took the group to Arashiyama (the Togetsukyo Bridge, the garden of Tenryu-ji Temple [the Sogenchi Garden and the Hyakkaen Garden], and the bamboo grove) and to Kinkaku-ji Temple. I had been a little concerned about walking pace, but everyone was in good spirits and walked well. They were also planning to go cycling around the Fushimi area the next day. Arashiyama was especially crowded as the tourist season had just begun. Kinkaku-ji, on the other hand, was not so crowded because we arrived just before closing time. Some of the guests had brought professional-grade single-lens reflex cameras and took many photographs. They proudly showed me a close-up shot they had taken of the phoenix on top of Kinkaku-ji. When we parted, the guests asked for a recommendation, so I introduced a tempura restaurant before saying goodbye. A notable stop on the tour was Kinkaku-ji Temple, also known as the Golden Pavilion. This Zen temple in northern Kyoto is famous for its top two floors completely covered in gold leaf, which shimmer beautifully when reflected in the surrounding pond. Originally built in the late 14th century as a retirement villa for a shogun, it was later converted into a temple and remains one of Kyoto's most iconic and beloved landmarks.

    Title: What Is a Private Miyajima and Hiroshima Peace Park Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from Europe. They were very warm and cheerful, smiling and sharing many stories from the moment we met. They also told me a great deal about their hometowns. On this day, the tide at Miyajima was high in the early morning, so we set out early, and thanks to that there were fewer people and the guests were delighted to view everything at a relaxed pace. They had previously explored Tokyo and Kyoto without a guide, and told me again and again as we went along, "With a guide, we get to encounter stories, places, and scenery we never would have known on our own! Thank you so much!" They were a very close group, and since one of them especially enjoyed photography, I asked and took many photos of them. The guests also enjoyed shopping, and had a wonderful time at the shopping street in Omotesando. They had their names engraved in Japanese on a pair of chopsticks they purchased, which made them very happy. It was their first time trying okonomiyaki for lunch. They were delighted that each could choose toppings to suit their own preferences, so that both could enjoy it. They liked it very much, and thanked me many times here as well. At the Peace Memorial Park, crowds were expected after 2 p.m., so after visiting the cenotaph and a few other spots, we headed straight to the museum, where it was relatively uncrowded. However, one of the guests found the exhibits too tragic and sad and did not feel ready to view the main building's displays, so they waited on a sofa in front of the main building while I went through it with the other. Both of the guests viewed the historical exhibits afterward with great interest. Since one of them had been quite shaken, after the museum I kept descriptions of the tragedy of the bombing more restrained, and focused instead on stories that connect to the future, such as reconstruction and peace education for children. Finally, they wanted to go to a ramen shop, so I guided them to a popular nearby restaurant and concluded the tour. They were very considerate and warm until the very end, thanking me many times, and it was a great honor for me to be able to guide them.

    What Is a Private Walking Tour of Arashiyama and Sagano in Kyoto Like? A Licensed Guide's Report After meeting at the front of the moss temple as arranged, we took a pre-arranged taxi to Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple. I had mentioned in advance that it is closed on Wednesdays, but when I explained that it is possible to see a little from the outside and that it makes for a pleasant walk, the guests said they would still like to see it from the outside, so we headed there. When I explained the origins of the temple and its stone statues, they were very moved and took many photos. After that, we continued while enjoying the scenery of the preservation district. The guests were very fond of photography and had brought a fine camera, so they were able to enjoy taking many photos both inside the temple grounds and along the roads. They also responded enthusiastically to my explanations of what each place was, and I could feel that they were very interested in Japan and wanted to savor their sightseeing experience. The view from the observation deck at Kameyama Park was especially beautiful thanks to the fine weather, and the guests were delighted. Along the bamboo grove path, they fully enjoyed the bamboo following Adashino Nenbutsu-ji Temple, and they took their time viewing the garden of Tenryu-ji Temple and the interior of its main hall. After visiting the garden of Hogon-in Temple, we walked out to the riverside, and I introduced a few shops before ending the tour. The guests wanted to make good use of their time with a guide, and after the tour they planned to have lunch in Arashiyama and spend the rest of the day there. A notable stop on the tour was Tenryu-ji Temple. Tenryu-ji is one of Kyoto's most important Zen temples and is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is renowned for its beautiful landscape garden, designed to incorporate the surrounding mountains as borrowed scenery, and it offers a serene atmosphere that reflects traditional Japanese aesthetics throughout the seasons.

Fushimi Inari Taisha is one of Kyoto's most iconic shrines, famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates that form winding pathways up the sacred Mount Inari. As the head shrine of Inari, the deity associated with rice, prosperity, and business success, it attracts many visitors who walk through the tunnels of torii gates donated by individuals and companies over the centuries.

    Osaka Private Family Tour Report: What Does a Guided Walk Through Kuromon Market, Osaka Castle, and Shitennoji Look Like? The guests were a group visiting from Oceania. Having arrived only the previous evening, some of the group preferred to rest and did not join the tour. On the way from the Hotel to Nippombashi Station, we walked through Kuromon Market, where I introduced various Japanese foods along the way, which was very well received. As it was the first day of a holiday period, Osaka Castle was crowded, but we managed to reach the main keep after about a 20-minute wait. I explained the history of Osaka Castle and the Toyotomi clan as we made our way back down from the keep. On the way from the station to Shitennoji Temple, we took a short break to enjoy some takoyaki. After visiting Shitennoji Temple, the tour came to an end. A notable stop on the tour was Shitennoji Temple, which is widely regarded as one of the oldest officially administered Buddhist temples in Japan. Founded in the early 7th century, it was established by Prince Shotoku and has long been an important center of Buddhist learning and worship. The temple grounds feature a five-story pagoda, a main hall, and a serene garden, offering visitors a glimpse into Japan's early Buddhist architecture and spiritual traditions.

    Title: What Is a Private Day Tour of Hakone Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America. Although one of the group had visited Japan around 40 years ago, this trip was the fulfillment of a long-standing wish list. They came to Hakone after already traveling through Osaka and Kyoto. The prior communication through an agency had remained unclear up to the day itself, but we were able to meet successfully. Because it was the first day of a three-day holiday weekend and the weather was perfectly clear, considerable crowds were expected, so we toured in the reverse direction of the standard Hakone Golden Course, which allowed us to avoid the congestion. At Hakone Shrine, I explained Shinto and the influence it has had on Japanese culture, and the guests remarked that there was much to learn from Japan. They also seemed fascinated by a kendo practice being held by children within the shrine grounds. The clear skies offered a magnificent view of Mount Fuji, and on the pirate ship we were able to secure the best spot on the top deck, so the guests thoroughly enjoyed the natural beauty of Hakone. One of the guests had once taught art at an elementary school and wished to spend plenty of time at the Hakone Open-Air Museum, so we concluded the tour at that location. A notable stop on the tour was Hakone Shrine. Hakone Shrine is a historic Shinto shrine located on the shores of Lake Ashi, founded in the 8th century and long revered by travelers and warriors. It is famous for its striking red torii gate standing in the water, known as the Torii of Peace, which has become one of the most photographed spots in the Hakone area.     What Does a Private One-Day Tokyo Tour Covering Meiji Shrine, Asakusa, and Kappabashi Look Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America, staying in Japan for about a week. They were surprised by how much greenery there is. One of the guests was especially interested in history. They mentioned that Meiji Shrine was beautiful, and we were lucky enough to see a wedding ceremony taking place there. In Asakusa, we of course visited Senso-ji Temple, but since one of the guests was interested in swords, short swords, and Noh masks, we visited several shops. They also wanted to try a local restaurant, so we went for okonomiyaki, which they said was very delicious. They also enjoyed Japanese sake. After that, since they wanted to buy a kitchen knife in Kappabashi, we ended the tour there. The weather was good, even a little hot, but I believe they enjoyed themselves. A notable stop on the tour was Meiji Shrine in Tokyo. Meiji Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken, completed in 1920 and set within a vast forest of around 100,000 trees donated from across Japan. Located near Harajuku, it is one of Tokyo's most visited shrines, especially during the New Year period, and visitors can often witness traditional Shinto wedding ceremonies within its grounds.

    Title: What's a Private Osaka Food and Shopping Tour Like from a Cruise Ship? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America who were in Japan for the first time. They had boarded a cruise ship in Yokohama and arrived at the Port of Osaka via Shimizu. We first went to Kuromon Market, where they strolled and sampled street food such as takoyaki, thoroughly enjoying the lively atmosphere of Kuromon. For lunch, we visited an okonomiyaki restaurant that is mostly frequented by locals, and they were very pleased with the authentic Osaka-style okonomiyaki and yakisoba, saying it was "more delicious than the okonomiyaki we had in Tokyo." They also took an interest in my personal life, and we had a lively conversation sharing stories about our children and grandchildren. They also chatted a little with the owner of the shop. I felt it was wonderful that they were able to interact with a local in a way that would not be possible at a chain restaurant. After the meal, they paid their respects at the Mizukake Fudo at Hozen-ji Temple, and since they wanted to buy a "teko" (a metal spatula used to scoop okonomiyaki off the griddle) that had been used at the okonomiyaki restaurant, I guided them to Doguyasuji. They then asked whether I knew of an Onitsuka Tiger store, so I took them to the shop in Shinsaibashi. When it was time, we took the subway and I accompanied them to Osaka-ko Station. In addition to the food sampling, they were also very enthusiastic about shopping. They told me that it was a very good tour and that they had a wonderful time.

    I’m Masayuki Koike. I passed the National Guide Interpreter test in 2021, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I didn’t have any chance for guiding. But this January I started guiding foreign travelers to Japan. Since then, I guided FIT 6 times, Sumo Osaka tournament tour with chanko-nabe 4 times and Kyoto, Nara, Himeji bus tour 11 times . My guiding, based on broad knowledge of history, geography and Japanese culture, and in case of bus tour presenting a quiz on a bus, is very popular among guests. In addition, I’ve experienced a volunteering interpreter at sport events such as Rugby World Cup in 2019, and World Para Athletics in Kobe in 2024. Furthermore, I have experienced supporting foreigners in many cultural events such as Noh, Kodan, moon-viewing event and the like. Also, I’m Eiken-Ikkyu.
    I play tennis twice a week, attend a gym to do yoga two times a week and walk more than 8,000 steps a day to keep my health. When guiding, I walk around 25,000 steps. My sales point is being positive, having enough responsibility to fulfill my duty. As for English, I ‘m a member of East Kobe Toastmasters Club. I join 4 online English-studying groups a week. I read English newspaper twice a week and listen to NHK rajio-eikaiwa every day.
    The reason why I want to be a tour guide is that I thought now is the time to do it, with lots of foreign visitors coming to Japan. I would like them to feel “it was an enjoyable day with a good tour guide”. For that purpose, I would like to guide with the mind of hospitality.
    I live in Higashinada ward in Kobe, the nearest station is Konanyamate, JR WEST Kobe Line. So, I can go to Osaka in 30 minutes, Kyoto 60 minutes, Nara 70 minutes, Himeji 60 minutes.
    I live with my wife. I have two children, a boy living in Tokyo, a girl living close to my condo.
    My hobby is singing, especially Beethoven’s Symphony NO. 9. I have experienced singing 21 times as a member of chorus in a big theater. It’s my great joy.
    Also, traveling is my joy. Before the pandemic, I visited several countries like UK and Italy with my wife. These days yen is weak, so we often take domestic trips.
    In my high school days, I belonged to ESS( English Speaking Society). I participated in All Japan Inter-Senior-High School English Oratorical Contest for the Churchill Trophy and was awarded the 5th place. As for my job career, I was mainly engaged in domestic jobs such as accounting. There I learned the importance of diligence and hardworking. After retirement, I restarted studying English and got a job as a tutor at a cram school. I taught there for 5 years.
