    Title: What's a Private Kyoto Sightseeing Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report 1. The guests were a group of 18 in total, traveling in three taxis with 7, 7, and 4 people respectively, and I was in charge of a group of 7. Since one person paid the admission fees for all 18, all three taxis moved together. 2. After visiting Adashino Nenbutsu-ji Temple, the guests wanted to have lunch, so I introduced a restaurant in Arashiyama. Because of this, the originally planned Yasaka Pagoda was skipped. 3. At the Kyocera Museum of Art, the guests purchased souvenirs from the Mononoke exhibition. 4. At Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine, after taking a group photo, about 7 people joined the tour, while the others returned to the taxis.

    What Is a Private Kyoto Day Tour Like in Summer? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from North America. This was their first time in Asia, having previously traveled to major destinations across the Americas and Europe, and they came to Japan with the impression of it being a leading country at the forefront of economics, technology, and culture. Due to scheduling, they had no choice but to visit from late July despite the intense heat. Today, the extreme heat made it a very sweaty tour for everyone, though they stayed hydrated diligently, and they kept smiling throughout while frequently asking for help taking group photos. They especially seemed to enjoy the unexpectedly full-bloom lotus pond in Arashiyama and the vivid green surroundings of Kinkaku-ji. After visiting the main spots at Fushimi Inari, they expressed a wish to stay a little longer within the grounds, so I provided guidance on the best transportation for their return, and we exchanged smiling handshakes with everyone on-site before saying goodbye.

    Born, raised and married in Kyoto, I am Masaaki Tanaka started English-speaking licensed guide since 2008, guiding mostly those English-speaking inbound tourists in Kyoto, which is my home base, and in Osaka (where I woked so long time until my retirment) and Nara and in other Kansai areas incl.     What Is a Private Osaka Walking Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Osaka Castle and Shitenno-ji The guests were visitors to Osaka. Due to a delayed train from Kyoto, the tour effectively started about 30 minutes late. The guests did not seem to have any particular interest in the sightseeing spots. During the explanations, the guests took frequent breaks. After visiting Osaka Castle, we stopped for a rest and a light meal at a bakery near the nearest station. We then visited Shitenno-ji, but on the way we stopped at a pharmacy so that a cough remedy could be purchased. In the end, as time was running short, the guests decided it was not necessary to visit the final destination of Dotonbori and chose to return to the hotel, so we parted ways at the nearest station. The guests mentioned they would be joining a "food-tasting tour" that evening, and I found myself a little curious about whether they would be able to take part.

    I would like to warmly welcome you to Japan this time. I am from the city of Kobe, which is of course, well-known for very tasty Kobe Beef . You can taste
    real genuine Kobe Beef here. Kobe is also called “Home of Japanese Sake” with lots of Sake breweries, and I recommend you would visit those breweries
    if you have any interest in Japanese Sake as well as one aspect of Japanese cultures. Of course, you can have tastings of various kinds of Sake there.

    Whenever during the tour, I always try to make it safe, pleasant and comfortable for all of the guests, which is my first priority. I am very much confident
    that you can have a pleasant and unforgettable experience in Japan. Just tell me about your preference; what you would like to like to see, have, know
    and eat and so on. Particularly, I hold the license for cooking qualified by the government here and maybe, I can reply you for questions related to the
    foods here. In this respect, I strongly recommend you would try not only famous Japanese cuisine such as Sushi, Tempura or Suki-yaki but some
    Japanese traditional local foods, like Tako-yaki, Okonomi-yaki and Kushkatsu. They are sometimes called the soul foods of Japan. Here is the brief
    explanation for these three foods.

    1) Tako-yaki
    Tako-yaki is a snack filled with pieces of octopus in a batter of flour , egg and soup stock. You can call them octopus dumplings or balls. “Tako” means
    octopus and “yaki” means grilled or broiled.
    2) Okonomi-yaki
    This word Okonomi-yaki means “cook just as you like” and you can use whatever you like as toppings, such as beef, pork, shrimp, squid and octopus.
    Okonomi-yaki is round shape and just like pancakes or pizza in shape mainly made from egg, flour and water.
    3) Kushi-katsu
    Kushi-katsu is skewered cutlet or deep-fried foods on a stick. “Kushi” means skewer and “katsu” means cutlet. Various kinds of foods are used for
    ingredients such as beef, pork, chicken, shrimp, squid, octopus and lots of kinds of vegetables.

    Actually, the western Japan including Osaka, Kobe and Himeji is called as “Home of such local soul foods”. You should give it a try and I am sure
    that you like them very much.

    I sincerely hope that I can be your tour guide this time in Kobe, Osaka and Himeji. If my guests said to me after the tour, “I have had a very good

    What Can You See on a Private Tokyo Day Tour of Asakusa and Tsukiji? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America. Originally the group was planned to be larger, but due to circumstances some could not join, so it was a group of three. Since they had visited the Imperial Palace the day before and were a bit tired, and had also already been to Meiji Shrine, which was originally part of the plan, they preferred to take it easy and visit just two places today. We toured Asakusa and the Tsukiji Outer Market. At Tsukiji, we explored a wide range of spots including the fish market, and enjoyed dashi, tamagoyaki, wagyu, seafood, and Japanese tableware, giving the guests a chance to experience the food culture. Since they wanted to eat sushi and had never been to a conveyor-belt sushi restaurant, I guided them to a rotating Sushizanmai, and they were very pleased (they were especially moved that the aosa miso soup was the most delicious miso soup they had ever had!). We wrapped up a bit early, walked through the complex underground of Tokyo Station, and I saw them safely back to the Hotel.

    Title: What Is a Private Day Tour of Nikko Like for a Family Visiting Japan? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from North America. They had come to Japan for a baseball goodwill event, and everyone in the group loved baseball and wore caps of a baseball team. The itinerary we had decided on beforehand by email consisted mainly of buildings and historical sites in the World Heritage area, so I thought some of the guests might get bored, and I offered to change the plan to a national park instead. However, they said the original course was fine. As I had expected, in the latter half some of the guests seemed less interested, and with the heat they lost some energy, so I asked whether they would like to end the tour early, but they wanted to continue as planned. I was a little concerned about fatigue since there was an event the following day, but the guests did not seem worried at all. I lent them the cooling packs I had brought, took them to shaded and cooler spots as often as possible, and made sure they stayed hydrated, and we managed to complete the planned course to the end. During short breaks, some of the guests played games to refresh themselves. I realized it would be good for me to prepare some material that everyone in the group can enjoy as well. One of the guests was very keen on taking photos. They took many photos themselves, and at every location I also took group photos as requested. This guest was very particular about how the photos turned out, and if the location, angle, brightness, or people appearing in the background were not to their liking, we would retake them many times. (Given how crowded it was, this was to some extent unavoidable.) I gradually came to understand their preferences, so by the latter half I was no longer asked to retake photos. Normally during my tours I communicate a lot with the guests and become friendly with them, but this time, while riding the bus or during lunch, the guests were talking quickly among themselves while showing each other their phones, so it was hard to join their conversation. Still, they seemed to be enjoying themselves, so I left them to it. Since I had heard they liked ramen and gyoza, I took them to a restaurant with a variety of choices. Their conversation was very fast-paced, so it was challenging to keep up with the rhythm, but they listened seriously to my explanations at both Rinnoji Temple and Toshogu Shrine, and they said of the grandeur of the imperial villa buildings, "I really love this atmosphere!" At the end, when I asked whether they had enjoyed themselves, they were delighted and said it had been very fun and thanked me, which reassured me.

    Can You Do a Private Day Trip in Tokyo to Nezu, Yanaka, and Asakusa? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visiting from Europe. They had been very much looking forward to their trip to Japan, and because they wanted to see beautiful places, we exchanged messages many times beforehand about where to go. Just before the tour, we changed the plan from the Imperial Palace to Nezu and Yanaka. Since they had wished for places that did not feel too touristy, they were very pleased with this. For lunch in Asakusa, they said they preferred somewhere that locals would go, so we chose ramen. Together with the matcha ice cream after visiting the main hall of Sensoji Temple, they seemed very satisfied.

    Tour Itinerary

    • 09:50 Meet at the 20th floor lobby of the Odakyu Century Southern Tower in Shinjuku. Interview them about places they want to visit, etc., and decide as follows. Shinjuku Gyoen → Sensoji Temple → Meiji Shrine. Since the hotel front desk sells the subway 1-day common pass, purchased it for 800 yen and departed.
    • 10:45-11:30 Guided them through Shinjuku Gyoen.
    • 12:10-13:00 Upon arriving at Asakusa Station, everyone said they were hungry, so we had a ramen lunch at Tanaka Soba shop on Kannon-dori.
    • 13:00-14:50 Guided them through Nakamise-dori and Sensoji Temple. They did quite a bit of shopping for food and souvenirs. After finishing, moved to Meiji Shrine.
    • 15:25-16:20 Guided them through Meiji Shrine. They had said they would return to the hotel in Shinjuku, so I tried to accompany and take them, but the daughter and son said they wanted to go to Ginza, so the family of 4 got into a taxi in front of Harajuku Station, and we parted ways.

At Shinjuku Gyoen, the group enjoyed the Japanese garden very much and took photographs. However, it was quite hot, and at the request of one of the guests we spent about 45 minutes on the Japanese garden only. When we arrived in Asakusa for lunch, everyone said they were very hungry, so I asked what they would like. They said either sushi or ramen, so I had them look at both a sushi restaurant and a ramen restaurant along Kannon-dori. Opinions were split within the group, which was amusing. After discussing it, they decided on the ramen restaurant and went to Tanaka Soba. They loved the flavor here so much that everyone ordered a second bowl of ramen. It was the right choice. Afterward, I took them to Nakamise, and one of the guests said, "I love the atmosphere of this place." Starting with a kimono as a gift, they bought a considerable number of items, including a folding fan, a furoshiki cloth, sweets, ice cream, and a good-luck charm, and were very satisfied. After finishing at Meiji Shrine, some of the guests said they wanted to return to the hotel since it had been such a hot day, but suddenly some of the guests spoke up, saying they wanted to go shopping in Ginza. As the whole group planned to head to Ginza by taxi, I helped them hail a taxi in front of Harajuku Station, and the tour ended. As we parted, the guests said, "We had a wonderful time. You are our friend," so I understand that they were very satisfied.

    Title: What Is a Private Osaka Tour Like with a Multi-Generational Group? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a multi-generational group traveling together. I had not been informed in advance about a large double stroller, which meant we were forced to take longer routes in order to use elevators. I proceeded with the tour carefully, keeping an eye on how everyone in the group was doing. I had bought an Enjoy Eco Card so that we could purchase tickets smoothly at Osaka Castle Main Tower, but just when it was time to buy the admission tickets, one member of the group said they had "lost" theirs! One of the guests went off separately to line up and buy a ticket, but I managed to use my Osaka Metro one-day pass to purchase tickets for the guests. Since only the guide was allowed through, I stepped out once with a guaranteed re-entry and searched for the guest who was supposed to be waiting in line, but I could not find them. They had given up on buying a ticket and were having a beer at a café. In the end I was able to reunite with that guest, and we used the elevator up to the observation deck. Some of the group wanted to see each floor properly, while others were tired and wanted to stop, so we split up, and I accompanied the ones who wanted to continue and explained the exhibits, which they were very happy about. After visiting Shitennoji Temple, some of the group reached their limit and said they would "go back by taxi," so we parted ways in front of the torii gate at Shitennoji. They were very pleased and told me I had really done a great job that day.

    Title: Can You Do a Private Nikko Tour with a Chartered Car? A Licensed Guide's Report The tour was for a group visiting from North America. At the guests' request, a chartered car was available for part of the itinerary, allowing us to start comfortably. While strolling along Kanmangafuchi Abyss beside the Daiya River, one of the guests became quite frightened of the dragonflies and horseflies, and at the next stop, the Akechidaira Ropeway, another of the guests said they were afraid of heights, so they did not go up to the observation deck. However, after having curry rice for lunch at a souvenir shop near Kegon Falls, spirits lifted suddenly, and one of the guests enjoyed the grilled corn so much for its sweetness that they had a second helping. One of the guests had learned about Japanese history and asked eager questions about the period of national isolation and the Meiji Restoration.

    Title: What's a Full-Day Private Family Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Asakusa, Akihabara, and Harajuku The guests were a group visiting from Europe. After I sent my initial greeting, the guests' reply email somehow did not reach me. We were later able to get in touch without issue, and I was glad to receive information in advance. The tour day was their second day in Tokyo. I had asked them beforehand to prepare for heat-stroke prevention, but the real challenge was the humidity. In any case, I made sure everyone drank water little by little throughout the day. At Senso-ji Temple, which was quiet with few people before opening hours, the group visited the main hall, drew omikuji fortunes, and purchased a goshuincho stamp book. In Akihabara, the group enjoyed the Namco arcade, trying the crane games and gashapon machines. At the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, we saw only the gardens and the former castle keep foundation. I had originally intended to guide them to a toy store on Omotesando, but since they wanted to buy insect repellent and sunscreen, we stopped at a drugstore near Meiji-jingumae Station. In Harajuku, seeking cool relief, the group shopped at UNIQLO and Laforet Harajuku, and enjoyed takoyaki and kebabs on Takeshita Street. At Meiji Shrine, the group obtained a goshuin stamp and paid their respects, and we parted ways at the Shibuya crossing. One member of the group, full of energy at the start, grew tired in the latter half partly due to jet lag, but everyone communicated patiently until the very end.
