Osaka in Half a Day: at Shitennoji Temple & at Umeda Water Clock

    Tour Itinerary

    • 11:00 at Osaka Castle (exterior only)
    • 12:45 at Shitennoji Temple

Title: What Is a Private Walking Tour of Osaka Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Umeda Sky Building The guests were an elderly group who had done a nine-hour tour in Kyoto the previous day and seemed a little tired. Some of the guests were very strong walkers, while others moved at a much slower pace and needed to rest frequently. On top of that, the day was again unusually hot, which seemed to double their fatigue, and I was frequently asked, "How far do we have to walk to the next spot?" We visited the Umeda Sky Building, but there had been a slight misunderstanding about the "Floating Garden Observatory," as the guests seemed to have expected an ordinary park with lots of trees; some of the guests were also uncomfortable with heights. At the Umeda Sky Building, we took a rest at the guests' request. Because the pace was quite slow, we ran significantly over time, and the guests said it was fine to skip the final spot, the "Water Clock," and end the tour there. However, since this spot is located on the way to the taxi stand, we stopped by, and the guests were very pleased. Special note 1) Today, I, the guide, made a major mistake. The correct meeting time was a 10:00 start, but I had mistakenly understood it to be 10:30. As a result, I kept the guests waiting for about 30 minutes, which caused them great inconvenience, and I apologized sincerely and politely. The original confirmation document had stated 10:30, but it had been changed to 10:00 when the itinerary was confirmed, and I had failed to verify this change. The guests also seemed to have noticed that the guide had arrived at the meeting point 30 minutes early, and I believe they accepted my apology. Throughout the rest of the tour they remained smiling the entire time, for which I was grateful. Going forward, I will pay even closer attention when confirming itineraries so that this kind of thing does not happen again. Special note 2) As mentioned in your recent communication, I felt that the fact that this was a "walking tour" was not entirely understood by the guests. Again today there were many questions about how far we would walk and how long it would take. Although I carefully explained that this was strictly a walking tour and I believe they understood, there was also a comment that "we thought each spot would be right in front of the nearest station." Going forward, I would like to keep this point in mind when communicating with guests.

    Dear my guests,

This is (Mr.) Yama, greeting from Kobe, Japan.
I would like to warmly welcome you to Japan this time. I am from the city of Kobe, which is of course, well-known for very tasty Kobe Beef . You can taste
real genuine Kobe Beef here. Kobe is also called “Home of Japanese Sake” with lots of Sake breweries, and I recommend you would visit those breweries
if you have any interest in Japanese Sake as well as one aspect of Japanese cultures. Of course, you can have tastings of various kinds of Sake there.

Whenever during the tour, I always try to make it safe, pleasant and comfortable for all of the guests, which is my first priority. I am very much confident
that you can have a pleasant and unforgettable experience in Japan. Just tell me about your preference; what you would like to like to see, have, know
and eat and so on. Particularly, I hold the license for cooking qualified by the government here and maybe, I can reply you for questions related to the
foods here. In this respect, I strongly recommend you would try not only famous Japanese cuisine such as Sushi, Tempura or Suki-yaki but some
Japanese traditional local foods, like Tako-yaki, Okonomi-yaki and Kushkatsu. They are sometimes called the soul foods of Japan. Here is the brief
    explanation for these three foods.

    1) Tako-yaki
Tako-yaki is a snack filled with pieces of octopus in a batter of flour , egg and soup stock. You can call them octopus dumplings or balls. “Tako” means
octopus and “yaki” means grilled or broiled.
    2) Okonomi-yaki
This word Okonomi-yaki means “cook just as you like” and you can use whatever you like as toppings, such as beef, pork, shrimp, squid and octopus.
Okonomi-yaki is round shape and just like pancakes or pizza in shape mainly made from egg, flour and water.
    3) Kushi-katsu
Kushi-katsu is skewered cutlet or deep-fried foods on a stick. “Kushi” means skewer and “katsu” means cutlet. Various kinds of foods are used for
ingredients such as beef, pork, chicken, shrimp, squid, octopus and lots of kinds of vegetables.

Actually, the western Japan including Osaka, Kobe and Himeji is called as “Home of such local soul foods”. You should give it a try and I am sure
that you like them very much.

I sincerely hope that I can be your tour guide this time in Kobe, Osaka and Himeji. If my guests said to me after the tour, “I have had a very good
and pleasant time with you today. I hope I can come here again and name you as our guide”, which is my great pleasure. Moreover, I would be
great honored if they say “I like Japan now thanks to you”.

Looking forward to meeting you soon here.
    Doomo Arigato Gozaimasu!

Title: What Is a Private Walking Tour of the Imperial Palace, Nezu Shrine, and Yanaka Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guest did not use a messaging app and had replied only briefly to emails beforehand, but arrived early in the hotel lobby, so we were able to start the tour smoothly. As expected, the guest enjoyed taking photos. While guiding through the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, I realized the guest was especially interested in the Nijubashi Bridge and the Fushimi-yagura Turret, so I also showed them the Imperial Palace Outer Garden. I had been refraining from guiding the Outer Garden during the hot summer season, but I truly felt that it remains popular as a photo spot even among international visitors. Since lunch was finished quickly, I also took the guest to Yanaka after Nezu Shrine. Nezu Shrine had unexpectedly few worshippers, so we were able to take many photos in front of the "Senbon Torii" (Thousand Torii Gates). The guest seemed a little tired in the afternoon, but I felt they took an interest in the distinctive temples in Yanaka as well. Although it rained in the morning, the weather was fortunately good during the tour, which was a great help. Hi. My name is Masafumi Miyazaki. Please call me “Sam”. I am a government-licensed guide.
I was born in Tokyo and was raised in the suburbs of Tokyo called Tama area. When I was in university, I majored in western dramas, so I am good at playing like an actor.
I like reading, listening to the music, and walking. I belong to several walking clubs, and sometimes I guide the members around Tokyo.
One of my strengths as a guide is that I know well about kombu, Japanese kelps. In December every year, I work at a traditional kombu shop in Tsukiji Fish Market. At that shop, I learned a lot of things related to kombu or other ingredients for washoku. I can explain the different characteristics of them to you.
Also, I am familiar with Japanese flowers and plants. If you stroll around a Japanese garden with me, I am sure you will be able to enjoy beautiful flowers and unique plants in every season.
I look forward to meeting you. Thank you.

What Is a Half-Day Private Kyoto Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report Today's tour was for guests visiting from Europe. They were visiting Japan for the first time, staying for their trip and heading to the Kanto area (Kamakura and other places) before arriving in Kyoto yesterday. There were no particularly in-depth questions, but I received many general questions (How many kanji characters are there in Japanese? Why is there both horizontal and vertical writing? What percentage of people can speak English? About the mandatory retirement system, and so on). Since the travel time during the tour was long, I used that time to explain Japan's geographical characteristics and the natural threats and blessings that stem from them, as well as the nature worship that forms the basis of Japanese culture. I also explained the culture of wood and washoku (Japanese cuisine) centered on rice. Since it was their first time in Japan and it was a 4-hour tour, it may have been a little difficult to fully understand everything. As for the guests' impressions of the tour, there was a comment that Kinkaku-ji in particular was beautiful and wonderful. Another interesting point shared by the guests was that Japan is an easy country to visit for tourism (you can come easily for sightseeing without complicated paperwork), and this was one of the reasons they decided to travel to Japan.

Title: What Is a Private Kyoto Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Arashiyama, Kinkaku-ji, and Fushimi Inari The guests were a group visiting from Europe. Communication in English was extremely difficult, and even basic conversation required the use of a translation app. At the pre-tour stage, the destinations had not been decided, so we agreed to determine where to go after meeting on the day. The guests showed me photos of places they wanted to visit one after another, and I built the day's itinerary based on those. I considered how to travel efficiently using public transportation, but in the end all transportation was done by taxi. The taxi driver we used to travel from the Hotel to the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove did not know how to get to the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, which was both surprising and challenging. Since the driver was looking at a smartphone with one hand while driving, I signaled each time the light turned green and directed the route partway through, and we finally reached the bamboo grove. During our walk through the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, one of the guests wanted to use the restroom, so I guided them to a restroom at a nearby park, but it appeared there was no toilet paper available, which caused some difficulty. Before heading to Kinkaku-ji, as a measure against the heat I recommended purchasing frozen bottled drinks, and we walked while each of the guests carried one. One of the guests was a smoker, so I pointed out smoking areas at various locations. The finishing time was a little early, but after walking around Fushimi Inari Taisha, I took the guests back to the Hotel by taxi and we parted ways.

Title: What Is a Private Family Tour of Miyajima and the Hiroshima Area Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group of four visiting from North America. Due to a medical emergency, the train was delayed by about ten minutes, but on the platform we started the tour smoothly by chatting about topics such as the local Carp baseball team. On the ferry boat, the conversation turned to the U.S. military base in Iwakuni, and one of the guests asked whether U.S. military bases are still necessary in Japan. As this is a very delicate issue, I simply answered that people hold different views depending on their perspective. In the shopping arcade, a calligraphy performance was taking place, and I thought it might be a good opportunity to explain Japanese culture through calligraphy, so I gave it a try. I attempted to explain that Japanese people seek to perfect their ideal selves through their respective arts and skills, that this is called a "do" (a path or way), and that it is cherished and passed down to the next generation. However, an "insufficient expressive power crisis alarm" went off in my head, so I decided to stop there.

What Is an Early Morning Private Tour of Miyajima Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from Europe, and this was an early morning tour to Miyajima. Since they needed to return to the hotel and catch the 13:32 bullet train to Fukuoka, time was limited, but they were very pleased with Itsukushima Shrine and the Museum of History and Folklore. They described Miyajima as "stunning." Beyond Itsukushima Shrine, at the Museum of History and Folklore they showed great interest in the delicate craftsmanship of Japanese artisans, as well as the architecture, garden settings, and subtle nuances of old Japan, and seemed genuinely moved. I felt they shared an aesthetic sensibility in common with Japanese people. From the bullet train they sent a thank-you message and photos via a messaging app, and even shared their home address, saying I should contact them if I ever visit Europe. Although our time together was short, I felt that our hearts truly connected. It made me want to visit Mont Saint-Michel someday.

Can You Do an 8-Hour Private Tour of Tokyo Visiting Senso-ji? A Licensed Guide's Report [Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.)](https://www.j-g-a.org/) guide led an 8-hour private tour of Tokyo for a guest who had come to Japan to visit family. The guest was very knowledgeable about Japan, listened attentively to the explanations, and asked many related questions. Although the guest had arrived only the day before and seemed a little tired, I believe the 8-hour tour was enjoyed all the way through. Since the guest requested a Japanese-style lunch, I took them to a local restaurant, where they finished an extra-large tempura rice bowl. At Senso-ji, the guest purchased prayer beads for a family member, and was a kind and wonderful guest.

Hi, I am Nobu, a National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter (English).
I have been an English guide in Tokyo area since January 2017.
Tokyo is a wonderful city, and you may enjoy this city by yourselves.
Even so, I recommend you go around with a guide, especially if it is your first time visit to Tokyo.
A good guide will help you to understand about Tokyo and Japan as well as how to use convenient but complicated public transportations more effectively.
I am glad if I can help you to make your tour more enjoyable.
I am looking forward to meeting you in Tokyo soon!

What's a Half-Day Private Tour of Toyosu and Tsukiji in Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report This was a first-time visit to Japan for a group from North America. Since the guests had some concerns about walking, we traveled mainly by taxi. They were curious about many things, and were surprised when I explained at Toyosu Market that an entire building was a freezer. They also took photos at shops selling traditional knives and sake. For the move from Toyosu to Tsukiji, I suggested the Yurikamome line, and we were lucky enough to get seats in the very front row by the driver's cabin. The guests were captivated by the constantly moving scenery throughout the ride and kept taking photos with a smartphone, enjoying a wonderful half-day.

What Is a Private Guided Tour of Hakodate Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The weather that day was cloudy and cooler than usual, and the guests mentioned several times how much they appreciated the pleasant coolness. Mount Hakodate was covered in clouds, and although I told them that the view from the summit would not be visible that day, they still wanted to ride the cable car, so we went up Mount Hakodate anyway. The cable car was essentially private, carrying only our small group. As expected, nothing could be seen from the top, so we came back down on the next cable car, but the guests were satisfied. Although it is not a place I usually visit, the guests wanted to see an authentic temple and shrine, so I took them to Hakodate Hachimangu Shrine. After climbing the steep stairs to reach the main hall, they were delighted to soak in its quiet and sacred atmosphere. I explained in detail the differences between shrines and temples, and they listened with great interest. Overall, the guests listened attentively to my explanations, asked many questions, and were a pleasure to guide.

Hello, my name is Akira Matsumoto, a national government-licensed guide in Hakodate and Sapporo. I’m a retired public school science teacher and have been working as a professional tour guide for more than five years. (Before retirement, I used to work as a volunteer guide mainly in Hakodate for more than 10 years) So I know every corner of Hakodate and its history, culture, and food.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, I got into the graduate school of Hokkaido University, and in Japan’s modern history.
So I am well-versed in Japanese history, Hokkaido’s local history, and the Ainu aborigine people’s culture.
I can offer you an informative and enjoyable tour with a polite and hospitable atmosphere.
I like to interact and communicate with foreign people and introduce my guests to Japan’s beautiful scenery, wonderful culture,
and best food. I assure you that I will welcome you with my best hospitality and make every effort to make your tour a good memory.
