    What Is a Private Day Tour of Otaru and Yoichi in Hokkaido Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group of four visiting Japan from North America. It was their second time in Japan, but their first time in Hokkaido. On a previous trip they had come in summer and struggled with the heat, so this time they came in November. They were hoping to see the autumn foliage, so this season may be the best time to visit Hokkaido. The interior tour of the Nikka Whisky Distillery in Yoichi requires a reservation about one month in advance. Since we did not have a reservation, we visited the museum instead. The exhibits and photographs have English explanations, so just reading them gives a good understanding of the history of Nikka Whisky, although the whisky production process is largely omitted. We had lunch at the Sankaku Market in Otaru, but there were a great number of tourists and we waited about 15 minutes for our turn. Including me there were five of us, and since a table for that many was not opening up, I asked the restaurant to split us so that four guests and I could be seated separately, and we managed to secure seats. We went shopping from the Otaru Canal, but the weather turned bad and the guests said they wanted to return to the hotel early, so we moved up the schedule and returned to the hotel in Sapporo. The photo was taken at an observation deck overlooking the winery vineyards in Yoichi.

    Title: What Can You See on a Private One-Day Tokyo Tour? A Licensed Guide's Report on Ginza, Asakusa, and Shopping The guests were visitors from North America, on their first trip to Japan. Their overall journey lasted about a month, traveling through Bangkok, Cambodia, and Vietnam, with Japan as their final destination. They had arrived early yesterday morning and then went on a guided tour of Tsukiji. Since today was their last day, they wanted to visit some of the most iconic spots, which is how the above itinerary came about. The morning was quite chilly, but once the sun came out it became warm enough to break a sweat. The guests wore short sleeves and shorts from the start, which turned out to be just right as the day went on. Because they have a large family, today was their last chance to buy souvenirs. They purchased Japanese-style hair ornaments and lucky cat figurines at the underground shop of the Kabukiza Theater and at the Nakamise shopping street of Sensoji Temple, and bought four kitchen knives at a knife shop. They also bought many other small items. Yesterday, after returning to their accommodation from Tsukiji, they had fallen asleep, so tonight they planned to return to their accommodation once to change clothes before heading out to Omoide Yokocho and Kabukicho.     I had worked in the international business scene for over 40 years and traveled to North America and European countries over 1000 days.
    After I retired from the business, I traveled to most of the major sightseeing spots in all 47 prefectures in Japan.

    My guide is starting from a brief history of the site where I am going to guide. I usually add a briefing about Japanese culture based on religions, such as Shinto Shrine and Buddhist temples. A geographic background behind the history is also important.

    I am happy to introduce Japanese Manga/Anime cultures such as Akihabara, Nakano Broadway and Ghibli related sites.
    Travelling along the JR central line where guests can stopover at major animation studios (it is not accepted to visit the inside). The majority of animation studios such as TMS Entertainment, SUNRISE, A1 Pictures etc. are located in this area. Suginami Animation museum, Studio Ghibli and Ghibli Museum are also located.
    Guests can feel old houses in the Spirited Away scene in the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum.

    I can also provide a pilgrimage to the sacred place (shooting location) for the Shinkai Makoto animation movies such as Your name, Weathering with you, and Suzume.

    Another interesting feature is to visit authentic Japanese style pub meals such as Yakitori, Karaage, and Sushi etc.
    Asakusa Hoppy Street, Ameyoko Street, Yurakucho, Shimbashi, Shinjuku Golden gai, Shinjuku Omoide Yokocho are nice to visit.

    A Sake tasting at Sake Cellar can be an option.

    In addition to the above, I am available in the neighboring cities.

    Kawagoe is an old town developed in the 17th century. It has very close relationship with the Edo central government. Kawagoe castle ruins, Kitain temple and 500 Buddha statues will welcome the guests.
    These areas are renovated and provide an old days atmosphere.
    Japanese style sweets food stands will fascinate the guests.
    Kawagoe is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

    Kamakura is the first Samurai worriers government established in the late 12th century.
    The Buddhism are introduced to Japan in the 6th century, and flourished at Nara and Kyoto later. A newer Buddhism sect such as Zen has well developed at Kamakura area.
    Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, Gigantic Buddha statue at Kotokuin Temple and the flower temple Hasedera Temple are must-see.
    Kamakura is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

    Title: What Is a Private Himeji Castle Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests today were a group visiting Japan for the first time from Oceania. They run a farm back home and export beef to Japan. The guests had arrived in Tokyo two days earlier and had been in Osaka the previous day. In fact, today was quite challenging just getting to the meeting point. The guests were traveling in Japan on a plan arranged by a travel agency, and today they were scheduled to arrive in Himeji by Shinkansen at 10:30. I waited at the Shinkansen ticket gate, but even after the scheduled Shinkansen arrived, the guests did not appear. When I contacted them, the reply was, "We're on the train now and just passed Kakogawa five minutes ago." When I asked, "Are you coming on the Special Rapid Service?" the answer was, "Yes." I hurried out through the central ticket gate to wait, and the whole group appeared with large suitcases. We quickly went back into the station (I paid the entry fee later), and since the guests had JR Passes, we went to the coin lockers on the Shinkansen gate floor and stored all the suitcases there. When I asked why they had taken a different train than planned, the reply was, "Because we're flexible." In any case, we were able to meet up safely, so we started the tour. We visited the Castle View spot, Himeji Castle, and Kokoen Garden. Since they said they would not have lunch, we all had ice cream together and returned to Himeji Station. As the guests were heading from Himeji to Tokyo, we obtained reserved-seat tickets for the Shinkansen at Himeji Station, and the tour ended. The reason the guests did not take the Shinkansen this morning was, in fact, that they had misunderstood "Shinkansen" and "the bullet train" to be different trains. From the Shinkansen heading to Tokyo, the guests sent me a thank-you message. They were very pleased.

    Title: What Is a Private Kyoto Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Kinkaku-ji and Nijo Castle Body: The guests were on their final day in Kyoto, departing after checking out of their hotel, and left the hotel around 10:40. By the time we arrived at Enmachi Station it was already past 12:30, so I asked whether they would like to have lunch first or head straight to Kinkaku-ji. They preferred to have lunch first, so I called Gontaro Kinkaku-ji branch to reserve a table. A table was ready upon our arrival, so they were able to enjoy their lunch smoothly. After lunch, they mentioned they would like to have some coffee before visiting Kinkaku-ji, so we stopped by a coffee shop and then I guided them through Kinkaku-ji. They took their time exploring the Ninomaru Palace at Nijo Castle, so it lasted almost until the castle's closing time. Since they would not be returning to the hotel right away, they asked that I conclude the guided tour at Nijo Castle, so we finished in front of Nijo Castle. They had not reserved seats on the Shinkansen bound for Hiroshima and said they planned to leave Kyoto without departing too late. The guests currently reside in Europe. Both had lived in Asia for half a year, during which they spoke English, and they use English for work. Having traveled in Asia the previous year and stayed in the region before, they had developed an interest in Asia and were traveling in Japan this year. They were interested in Japanese history, and I answered the questions about Japanese history that they asked.

    Title: What Is a Private Guided Day Tour of Nikko Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were very talkative and rarely stayed quiet. They brought up a wide range of topics, not only about Nikko but also about their personal life and about their work. Toward the end of the tour, my mind was tired from speaking English and I sometimes struggled to express myself well, but the guests were very perceptive and often understood before I finished, which was a great help. They asked me many questions about the upcoming highlights, meals, and other things in Kyoto and Osaka. Since I grew up in Osaka and often visited Kyoto as well because of family ties to the area, I shared everything I knew, and they were grateful. I only hope that the information I passed on will make their journey even more enjoyable and fulfilling. The guests were very energetic. The one disappointment was that we were unable to enter the Sanbutsudo hall of Rinnoji Temple, which was the last stop on our plan. Viewing was supposed to be available until 17:00, but for some reason the visiting hours seemed to have ended early. The guests understood the situation, which was a relief.

    Title: What's a Private Walking Tour of Kyoto's Higashiyama Area Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from North America who had traveled through Tokyo, Oita, the Seto Inland Sea, and Osaka before arriving in Kyoto two days ago. Yesterday they toured Nara. To avoid the crowds at the most popular spots as much as possible, I proposed a Higashiyama route starting from Ginkaku-ji, and the guests agreed. It was unusually warm for November and the autumn leaves had not yet turned, but I believe the guests fully enjoyed the quintessential Kyoto atmosphere while avoiding the crowds. (I had initially considered visiting the Kyoto Imperial Palace, but since today was Tuesday, its regular closing day, I changed the plan to Gion and Nishiki when we set out in the morning.) As we head into the peak season for autumn foliage, this route seems likely to be one I will use many times.

    What Is a Private Kyoto Temple Tour Like for European Guests? A Licensed Guide's Report I guided a group visiting from Europe. It was one day during the first half of a stay in Japan lasting nearly a month. The guests showed great interest in everything, including the places we visited and stories about Buddhism, and they took many photographs, savoring each location slowly. For lunch they enjoyed a hire-katsu (pork fillet cutlet) set meal and were very satisfied. They mentioned that a guide in Tokyo had recommended a goshuincho (temple seal book), and they were collecting seals almost as if it were a duty (laughs). The guests were charming and had a great sense of humor, as well as being gentle and kind, and I was able to spend a wonderful time with them. The Toshimaya waffles were also a big hit.

At the Toyosu auction, they were amazed to see a fish sold in just six seconds. They asked why there were no women at all at the auction market, and it did seem to strike them as curious.     My name is Kris,
    Before becoming a tour guide, I worked for a major steelmaking company as an engineer for many years. During my career, I lived and worked in both Germany and the United States for a total of five years. These experiences helped me understand different cultures and ways of thinking, which now helps me connect easily with guests from around the world.

    After retirement, I chose a second career as a tour guide because I truly enjoy meeting people from different countries and sharing Japanese culture, history, and daily life. I have been working as a guide for more than nine years and continue to enjoy every tour.

    I currently live in Tokyo, but I was born and raised in Kobe, near Osaka, and my family roots are in Kyoto. As a result, I have extensive knowledge not only of Tokyo but also of Kyoto, Osaka, and many other parts of Japan. I enjoy introducing both famous landmarks and hidden local gems that many visitors might otherwise miss.

    I am energetic, friendly, and very sociable. I always try to create tours that are relaxed, flexible, and tailored to my guests’ interests.

    Travel is one of my greatest passions, especially visiting hot spring resorts. I have visited more than 80 onsen destinations throughout Japan, giving me a deep appreciation of Japanese culture and regional traditions.

    Title: What's a Private One-Day Kyoto Walking Tour Like, from a Licensed Guide's Report? Before the tour, we exchanged many emails about various questions, including how to get to Osaka and sightseeing information. Because I wanted to fulfill the guests' wishes, I put together a carefully planned itinerary, but on the morning of the tour I received a request to have lunch earlier, so I had to suddenly change the order of visits and the lunch location. I had checked the business hours of the new lunch spot before going there, but I overlooked its only closing day of the month (the second Monday), so despite taking them there, it was closed. We had no choice but to have lunch at a nearby restaurant, but it was inexpensive and delicious, and many other international guests came in as well, which pleased the guests. I was relieved, but I reflected that I need to research more carefully in the future. It was a course the guests had requested, but the Philosopher's Path → Eikando/Nanzenji involves quite a lot of walking, so we cancelled the plan to visit one more place they had originally wanted to see and returned to Kyoto Station. Since they would be traveling from Kyoto to Osaka, I helped them purchase tickets at the vending machine and we parted ways.

    Title: What Is a Private One-Day Tokyo Tour Like for First-Time Visitors? A Licensed Guide's Report on Asakusa, Ueno, and Shinjuku Gyoen The guests were a group of friends visiting from North America, all visiting Japan for the first time. They had been friends since their school days and all planned this trip to Japan together as a kind of reunion. The evening before, they had arrived at Haneda Airport and made their way to their accommodation by monorail and train. The night before, they bought food at a nearby convenience store for dinner. Their stay in Japan was planned for two weeks, spending three days in Tokyo before traveling to Kyoto, Osaka, and Hiroshima, then returning to Tokyo before heading home. This private tour by a guide from [Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.)](https://www.j-g-a.org/) took place under clear skies. First, we headed to Asakusa. We passed through the Nakamise shopping street from Kaminarimon Gate to the main hall. As it was the middle of a holiday period, the guests were surprised by the huge crowds. I explained the "history of Sensoji Temple and Edo to Tokyo," "what the five-story pagoda is," and "the difference between Buddhism and Shinto." There were questions such as "Do all Japanese people believe in Buddhism?" and "What kind of teaching is Buddhism?" Next, we went to the Tokyo National Museum. On the way, the guests spotted Ueno Zoo and asked, "Are there pandas here?" I told them, "They have already returned to China." The guests mentioned that at a zoo in their home region, a panda had once been returned to China, but soon afterward another panda was sent over. At the museum, the guests seemed particularly interested in Buddhism and Buddhist statues, asking questions such as "When was Buddhism introduced to Japan?", "What kinds of sects are there?", and "Can all Japanese people chant sutras?" After this, the guests said they wanted to have ramen and gyoza for lunch, so we went to a restaurant in Shinbashi. They commented, "It's fast, cheap, and delicious," and "In our home region, a bowl of ramen like this costs 20 to 30 dollars." One of the guests could not eat pork and ordered fried chicken with rice instead. We then moved to Shinjuku Gyoen. The guests commented, "The Japanese garden is wonderful. Just sitting here feels great," and "It's amazing that there's such a green space in the middle of the city." They also commented, "Japanese people are all so polite," "Why are there no trash cans?", and "The public restrooms are clean and pleasant. We were impressed." I saw the guests off at Shinjuku Station, and the tour came to an end.

    As a recent group travel record, in October 2023, we have a track record of guiding a group of 33 people from Singapore to Narita Airport transfer plus sightseeing in Tokyo.
    Self-introduction:
    In the past, I was stationed in Canada, the United States, and Mexico as an expatriate of a Japanese bank for over 11 years.
    Since I have been mainly involved in the financing business in the United States for a long time, I think I am able to provide interpretation and translation services related to business and finance.
    I am a certified CPA in the United States.
    In addition, for three years from April 2016, I will be engaged in Japanese-English translation work (part-time), and I can also handle translation work.
    Although I don’t have a qualification in Spanish, but I think I can handle day to day conversation in Spanish without any problems.
    My hobby is trekking and from time to time, take a walk around mountains near Tokyo like Mt. Takao, Tanzawa, etc. I think it is possible to provide tourist information here as well.
    Since April 2015, I have been working as a Tokyo Metropolitan Tourism Volunteer and Tokyo Metropolitan Disaster Prevention Volunteer.
    One more, I have a separate house near Asuka Village, Nara prefecture, and I stay there for a total of about 30 days every year and have been enjoying sightseeing personally in the vicinity. Therefore, I think in the Kansai region, especially in Nara, Asuka, Yoshino, Koyasan, Kumano Kodo, etc., where I think I will be able to tour guide with confidence.
