    What Is a Private Kanazawa Walking Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Architecture, Tea Districts, and Crafts I guided a guest visiting from North America. The guest had been to Japan several times before, and this time the trip was centered on Kanazawa. Having studied architecture as a student, the guest wanted to focus mainly on Kanazawa's architecture, historic townscapes, and traditional crafts. The clever tricks of Myoryuji Temple seemed to be greatly appreciated. The quiet scenery of the Nishi Chaya District and the Kazuemachi Chaya District was also to the guest's liking. At the Higashi Chaya District, the guest enjoyed the elegant Shima teahouse as well. For lunch, the guest wanted local cuisine and enjoyed an oden set meal in the Higashi Chaya District. In the afternoon, the traditional crafts at the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum for Traditional Products and Crafts, the magnificent Seisonkaku Villa, and the tranquil D.T. Suzuki Museum were also well received. The guest mentioned having no particular likes or dislikes when it comes to Japanese cuisine. The guest was looking forward to visiting Takayama, Shirakawa-go, and Nousaku in Takaoka on the upcoming part of the trip. (Regarding the schedule change: the meeting point, start time, and end time were originally planned as Kanazawa Station from 10:00 to 16:00, but at the guest's request the meeting point was changed to the Hotel and the time was changed to 9:00 to 15:00.)

    I majored in civil engineering at a college and am interested in historical infrastructures. I have also guided foreign people around Ishikawa Prefecture, Toyama Prefecture, Gifu Prefecture, and Fukui Prefecture as an international activity of an English circle. I was a volunteer interpreter at the training camp for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in 2021.

    Hokuriku region has a lot of sightseeing spots as follows, beautiful landscapes like Kenrokuen Garden and Tateyama, tasty food like traditional Kaga dishes and fresh seafood from Toyama Bay, traditional crafts like Kaga Yuzen dyeing, Takaoka copperware, and Inami woodcarving. I introduce these spots and historical infra tourism such as Kurobe dam and industrial tourism.

    I also work as a translator. I translated the Japanese firefly squid tourism pamphlet into English in 2020.

    What's a Full-Day Private Food and Culture Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Tsukiji, Akihabara, Ameyoko, Asakusa, and Kappabashi The tour was originally scheduled to start from the accommodation, but to allow more time for the tour itself, we changed the meeting point to Tsukiji. At the Tsukiji Outer Market, I suggested and had the guests purchase and enjoy fatty tuna slices, tamagoyaki, strawberry daifuku, and wagyu sushi. In addition, they sampled and tasted dried goods, beans, tea, and dashi stock, and also made some purchases. Including the foods I suggested, the guests were very satisfied. We arrived in Akihabara a little after 10:00, but since several of the planned destinations did not open until 11:00, we could not visit them; however, I selected other places and adapted accordingly. At Ameyoko, I guided the guests to a large confectionery wholesaler, and while they were amazed by the wide variety of sweets, they found and purchased several unusual ones. They also enjoyed exploring Ameyoko in general. In Asakusa, the guests enjoyed the underground shopping area, and were satisfied with the sightseeing in Asakusa as well as guidance around the Hoppy Street area and pachinko parlors. For lunch, they requested sushi, and I had originally planned to take them to an authentic sushi restaurant, but when I called to make a reservation, I was told that lunch service was suspended. While I was considering alternatives, there was a conveyor-belt sushi restaurant nearby, so I asked whether they would like to try it — not authentic, but reasonably priced and delicious — and after some thought they agreed, so I guided them there, and in the end they were very satisfied. Finally, they also strolled with great interest around Kappabashi. In the end, the guests were very grateful, saying it had been a truly fulfilling day.

    What's a Private Day Tour of Osaka Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from Europe. Although I struggled a bit with the regional accent of their English, we managed to complete the tour as scheduled. They had apparently visited Himeji Castle in the morning, so one of the guests was tired and did not go up to the Osaka Castle observation deck. As this was the tenth day of a stay in Japan, the guests seemed weary of crowded places, so we also skipped the plum grove at Osaka Castle. At Kuromon Market they enjoyed takoyaki and strawberry daifuku, and they liked Hozenji Yokocho in Dotonbori, which had fewer people and retained the atmosphere of old Osaka. Since they mentioned they would visit Nara the next day and then stop by Osaka again, I introduced some places to eat and shop.

    What Is a Private One-Day Nara Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report Because the guests took the wrong train from Kyoto, the meeting time was delayed by one hour to 11:30. The guests were visitors from North America who had come to Japan to watch a Major League Baseball opening series held in Japan, and were also enjoying sightseeing in the country. The weather was very nice today, and they were able to enjoy a full day of sightseeing in Nara. We started at Kofuku-ji Temple, then fed the deer in Nara Park, and I explained the base-isolation structure at a construction research facility. After that, we moved to Todai-ji Temple, where I gave a brief explanation of the Nio guardian statues at the Nandaimon Gate and of Buddhism while viewing the Great Buddha. The guests were highly cultured, and the tour proceeded with many questions from them. After lunch, we moved to Nigatsu-do Hall, where the "Omizutori" ceremony was taking place. They looked on with great interest at the many people gathered in lines. We then passed by Mount Wakakusa and moved on to Kasuga Taisha Shrine, where we visited together. At Kasuga Taisha, I mainly explained Shinto while also touching on its complex relationship with Buddhism. Finally, we took a bus from Kasuga Taisha to Nara Station, where we parted ways. It was a day in which I received the kind words, "It was a wonderful tour."

The group was delighted with the fine weather and perfect conditions for sightseeing. Since some of the guests had difficulty walking, we used elevators and escalators as much as possible. Toward the end of the tour, one member of the group became noticeably tired, so I focused my support on assisting that person.     Hello, my name is Mizuho Yoshikawa. Please call me Mizu and my name means rice and water in Japanese.
    I’ve been a tour guide more than 200 times since the spring of 2023 in Kobe, Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Wakayama and Kochi. My tour is always original and new, depending on the guest’s preferences, encounters, seasons and weather.
    In Kyoto, one of my tours is to climb Mt. Kurama. It is about 1 hour from the city of Kyoto by train, it is a very quiet and beautiful mountain.
    In Osaka, which is called the kitchen of Japan, I am also in charge of food tour.
    In Nara, in addition to the Great Budda Hall, I guide guests to the temple with a really great view and Japanese wine, sake tasting.
    Every city has a unique charming point.
    The motto of my guiding is ” Ichigo Ichie” Once in a lifetime or seize the day. I learn this concept that the moment will never be the same again through tea ceremonies.
    I like a tea ceremony that is part of the traditional Japanese culture and embodies the spirit of “omotenashi” or hospitality. Through the tea ceremony, we can feel the spirit of “omotenashi” that has been passed down to us from ancient times.
    And I like to travel abroad and domestically, and I have been to 13 overseas countries and most of the prefectures in Japan. Traveling always gives me a new perspective, which is exciting and thrilling. Nowadays, we can learn a lot from the Internet, but traveling teaches us that it is important to have direct experience. When I travel, I feel that my five senses are infinitely expanded, and through my tour, I help all guests to have the same feeling in Japan.
    I was born and raised in Kanagawa Prefecture, which is next to Tokyo Prefecture in eastern Japan. When I was little, I could see Mount Fuji from my backyard. There was also a rice field nearby, and I grew up listening to the croaking of frogs. Listening to the frogs and seeing the mountains made me feel very calm.
    I moved to the city of Kobe, one of the Kansai areas in western Japan, which includes Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, and so on. I’m not from the Kansai area of western Japan, but I think that makes me sensitive to the differences between that area and the Kanto area, Tokyo, where I grew up.
    Speaking of Kobe, you might be thinking of Kobe beef. Of course you do. There are also other sake breweries in Nada in Kobe. You can also go from Kobe city to Himeji Castle, also known as the White Egret Castle, which was the first in Japan to be listed as a World Heritage Site in 1993.

At their request, I guided them around Asakusa, the Imperial Palace, and Meiji Shrine. They seemed to have studied a great deal about Japan beforehand, asked many questions, and listened attentively to what I had to say. At Asakusa, I explained the difference between Buddhism and Shinto, and as we moved from the historically older part of town to the newer areas, I also talked about the history. At Tokyo Station, I showed them where to board the Shinkansen. The guests especially loved the tranquility of Meiji Shrine. Toward the end, since the cherry blossoms had mostly turned to leaves and only one tree was still blooming beautifully, I asked whether they would like to go see the blossoms. They said they would be happy just to see even a single tree, so I took them to see the Kawazu cherry blossoms in Yoyogi Park. Since the guests were scheduled to return home before the Somei-Yoshino cherry blossoms bloomed, I was glad they were so pleased. I accompanied them to Harajuku Station, explained how to get to Shibuya, and we parted ways. They told me they would be traveling on to Hakone and Kyoto next.

    Title: What's a Private Kyoto Day Tour Like in Plum Blossom Season? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from North America. Based on our initial email correspondence, they mentioned they wanted to see plum and peach blossoms, so after showing them the plum garden at Kyoto Gyoen and a tea house within the grounds, we visited the Imperial Palace. At Tenryu-ji Temple, they were also delighted to see the weeping plum trees in full bloom. Although it was relatively crowded, the bamboo grove reached via the Tenryu-ji garden did not feel very congested, and the guests were very pleased. That said, the road to the final station was extremely crowded.

    Title: What Is a Private Wheelchair-Accessible Tokyo Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on the Imperial Palace, Meiji Shrine, and Nakano Prior to the tour, the guests informed me that mobility support would be needed and that they could travel by public transportation or taxi, so I researched barrier-free access in advance. The requested destinations were the Imperial Palace, Meiji Shrine, and the Murakami Shop in Nakano City. At first I was not sure what the "Murakami Shop" referred to, but I discovered it was a place called Tonari no Zingaro in Nakano Broadway. Upon investigating, I found that Nakano Station is one of only about three JR stations in central Tokyo not equipped with an elevator. For this reason, I decided we would travel from Harajuku to Nakano by taxi. Since the guests were very keen on visiting Tonari no Zingaro, I took them there, but quite a few people were lined up, so I asked how they would like to proceed. They had wanted to visit because it had been strongly recommended by a friend, but it seemed they did not find it as interesting as expected. The tour was originally supposed to conclude at this point, but I accompanied them as they explored the various floors of Broadway, though they did not seem particularly interested in manga or anime. After returning home, I looked into it and found that it is a space produced by Takashi Murakami (a Japanese contemporary artist, pop artist, and film director), a venue that attracts a certain type of clientele. The guests planned to visit Tsukiji the next day, followed by another day of sightseeing in Tokyo, then travel to the Kansai region, and finally return to Tokyo, on an itinerary of about two weeks.

    I had worked in the international business scene for over 40 years and traveled to North America and European countries over 1000 days.
    After I retired from the business, I traveled to most of the major sightseeing spots in all 47 prefectures in Japan.

    My guide is starting from a brief history of the site where I am going to guide. I usually add a briefing about Japanese culture based on religions, such as Shinto Shrine and Buddhist temples. A geographic background behind the history is also important.
    My course includes 4 to 5 (in 6 hours) sites from the following depending on where I will pick the guests up;

    – Ueno Park
    – Nezu Shrine
    – Imperial Palace outer park
    – Tokyo Central Station, Marunouchi historic district

    – Hama Rikyu Garden
    – Shinjuku Gyoen Garden
    – Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building
    – Roppongi
    – Meiji Shrine
    – Harajuku & Takeshita Street

    – and Any of your interest.

    I am happy to introduce Japanese Manga/Anime cultures such as Akihabara, Nakano Broadway and Ghibli related sites.
    Travelling along the JR central line where guests can stopover at major animation studios (it is not accepted to visit the inside). The majority of animation studios such as TMS Entertainment, SUNRISE, A1 Pictures etc. are located in this area. Suginami Animation museum, Studio Ghibli and Ghibli Museum are also located.
    Guests can feel old houses in the Spirited Away scene in the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum.

    I can also provide a pilgrimage to the sacred place (shooting location) for the Shinkai Makoto animation movies such as Your name, Weathering with you, and Suzume.

    Another interesting feature is to visit authentic Japanese style pub meals such as Yakitori, Karaage, and Sushi etc.
    Asakusa Hoppy Street, Ameyoko Street, Yurakucho, Shimbashi, Shinjuku Golden gai, Shinjuku Omoide Yokocho are nice to visit.

    A Sake tasting at Sake Cellar can be an option.

    In addition to the above, I am available in the neighboring cities.

    Kawagoe is an old town developed in the 17th century. It has very close relationship with the Edo central government. Kawagoe castle ruins, Kitain temple and 500 Buddha statues will welcome the guests.
    These areas are renovated and provide an old days atmosphere.
    Japanese style sweets food stands will fascinate the guests.
    Kawagoe is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

    Kamakura is the first Samurai worriers government established in the late 12th century.
    The Buddhism are introduced to Japan in the 6th century, and flourished at Nara and Kyoto later. A newer Buddhism sect such as Zen has well developed at Kamakura area.
    Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, Gigantic Buddha statue at Kotokuin Temple and the flower temple Hasedera Temple are must-see.
    Kamakura is about 1 – 1.5 train trip from Tokyo.

    Title: What Can You See on a 4-Hour Private Kanazawa Tour? A Licensed Guide's Report Since the Hotel is a little far from Kanazawa Station (about a 15-20 minute walk), the group traveled by the hotel shuttle bus departing at 9:15. Because the travel agency requested a 4-hour tour time, carefully visiting Higashi Chaya District, Kenrokuen Garden, Kanazawa Castle Park, and the Nagamachi Samurai District would leave insufficient time, so I made an effort to focus on the key highlights when guiding. After explaining to the guests in advance that the schedule would be tight, I gave suggestions so that they could visit places of particular interest on their own in the afternoon. I believe the guests came to understand the traditional culture and distinctive character of Kanazawa.
