    What Is a Private Hiroshima and Miyajima Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from North America, so after touring the Peace Memorial Museum they had rather complex expressions on their faces. I explained and talked about the Cenotaph, the Flame of Peace, the statue of Sadako, the hypocenter, the Atomic Bomb Dome, and the fact that Aioi Bridge was the target, as well as the fact that mainly ordinary civilians suffered the damage. They said it was very sad. We moved to Miyajima on the 11:35 special World Heritage Sea Route service. First, for lunch they had Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki. They seemed to like it very much. Due to the spring tide, this service was the last one heading to Miyajima. Because of the spring tide, the water had receded very far out, and the guests walked all the way to the Great Torii Gate and enjoyed touching it. We visited Itsukushima Shrine, Daigan-ji Temple, and Daisho-in Temple. They were surprised by the pitch-dark underground tunnel of the kaidan at Daisho-in Temple. After that we boarded the ferry from Miyajima, and I escorted them by JR train to Hiroshima Station, where the tour concluded.

    Title: What Can You See on a 6-Hour Private Tokyo Tour? A Licensed Guide's Report on Meiji Shrine, Koishikawa Korakuen, and Asakusa The guests were visiting Japan for the first time from Europe, with plans to stay several days in Tokyo before continuing to Takayama, Kyoto, and Osaka. Since they were interested in history and culture, I gave a brief overview of Japanese history using a timeline before we set off. At Meiji Shrine, we were fortunate again today to see two Shinto wedding processions. We took the customary photos at the famous camphor trees on the shrine grounds. The guests were pleasantly surprised by how different this peaceful setting was from Shinjuku, which they had explored on their own the previous day. At Koishikawa Korakuen Garden, I explained the daimyo system, the sankin-kotai (alternate attendance) system, and the three main Tokugawa branch families. Feeling a little hungry, we headed straight to a tuna restaurant upon arriving in Asakusa, and the guests ordered quite a lot. I then guided them to a sumo stable in Asakusa that they hoped to visit again later, before leaving the area. At Tokyo Station, I helped them purchase tickets for Takayama and Kyoto, and we parted ways. Because the guests had good stamina, we were able to move around smoothly. With this level of walking ability, covering four locations plus lunch in six hours was easy and much appreciated.

    Title: What Is a Private Guided Tour of Hiroshima Like? A Licensed Guide's Report I had the pleasure of guiding a group visiting from North America. As we found we shared common interests, we quickly became comfortable with one another and enjoyed lively conversations on subjects we had in common. In particular, when I spoke about my father's wartime memories and my own feelings of having grown up as a second-generation atomic bomb survivor, the guests listened intently, looking me in the eye. As I spoke, I felt a moment of genuine connection that transcended country and culture, and it was deeply moving. I also used a map to explain where Japan is located relative to North America, and the guests listened with great interest. When they learned that their home region lies at roughly the same latitude as Hokkaido, they seemed both surprised and to feel a sense of closeness. The guests were also very interested in Hiroshima specialties such as okonomiyaki and momiji manju, and at the end of the tour I guided them to Hiroshima Station. First, they happily selected momiji manju as souvenirs, and then they headed to an okonomiyaki restaurant.

    Title: What's a Private Tokyo Walking Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Rikugien, Nezu Shrine, and Asakusa The guests were visitors from Europe who had come to Japan to attend a conference in Yokohama. The day before the tour, they asked about leaving their luggage at Tokyo Station after arriving at Haneda in the morning, so I introduced a website where reservations could be made, but in the end they left their bags in a locker they found themselves. I met one of the guests at Tokyo Station, but since the other was coming from Yokohama and running late, we set off first and were able to meet up at Kaminarimon. I had advised them to prepare cash beforehand, but they seemed to think it would work out somehow and had not brought any. Since one of them did not have an iPhone, they tried to buy a PASMO or a ticket at the station, only to find that only cash was accepted, so I paid for a PASMO on their behalf, and they withdrew Japanese yen at a convenience store to pay me back. At Rikugien, a traditional daikagura performance was just about to begin, so we watched it for a while as I interpreted. At Nezu Shrine, the Sunday azalea festival was underway, with many food stalls and an incredible number of visitors; we happened to enter smoothly from the north gate, but there was a long line at the main entrance. The route from Nezu to Nijubashi is a single ride on the Chiyoda Line, and from there it is a short walk to Tokyo Station, which I highly recommend. They were bright, pleasant people, and we finished the tour with words of gratitude from them.

    What Is a Private Kurashiki Bikan District Walking Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America. They mentioned that they had chosen their destinations for this trip in Japan based on the advice of a neighbor who had been a professor at a research institute at a well-known university, and I was truly grateful that they included Kurashiki. The guests had a modest and refined manner. We started from the Kurashiki-kan, a former government building, and looked out over the Bikan Historical Quarter from above to reconfirm our route. The Meiji-era spinning mill building at Kurashiki Ivy Square was built in the English style, and the guests were deeply moved that its brickwork resembled the area where they live. Here, they thoroughly enjoyed the exhibition hall of masking tape, the product that made Kurashiki famous all at once. Since our route passed near Achi Shrine, we climbed up to the shrine and enjoyed the fully bloomed wisteria, said to be about 400 years old and the finest in Japan. We were also fortunate to see carp streamers decorated and swimming high in the sky. After that, we took our time exploring the Ohashi House, a residence boasting 230 years of history. The guests reflected on how life must have been in those days and asked questions from many angles. We then went to the Ohara Museum of Art, but since the interior could only be viewed after 2:00 p.m., we looked around the museum building, garden, and sculptures from outside. One of the guests had studied art during their student years and had studied abroad at a university in Europe, and I was able to benefit from their deep knowledge. That knowledge was at a level capable of explaining the works inside the museum, and I was overwhelmed. We then walked around the adjacent Japanese garden, Shinkeien, where we were even able to see a wedding taking place. Thus the first part concluded, and the guests planned to have lunch and then visit the Ohara Museum of Art again to appreciate the works at leisure. Given their expertise, they wanted to secure at least two hours. It was a short time, but they conducted the tour with keen insight, and I too was greatly enlightened.

    What Can You See on a Private Hakodate Tour in Cherry Blossom Season? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from Asia. Since they had already gone up Mount Hakodate the previous day, we skipped it and started with the morning market. Guests from Asia often purchase processed seafood products, and they bought dried squid snacks and locally grown strawberries. They were delighted that the strawberries were very sweet and large. As it was Sunday and the cherry blossoms at Goryokaku Park were nearly in full bloom, the park was crowded with many tourists and local people. Even with advance tickets, we had to wait about 20 minutes to go up the tower, but since we were enjoying various conversations, I don't think it felt like a burden. They were able to visit at the most beautiful time of year for Goryokaku Park, and I guided them to spots with lovely cherry blossoms and scenery visible from atop the earthworks, which made them very happy. After that, we strolled through the Motomachi area, and finally took a break at the Red Brick Warehouses with coffee and sweets before parting ways.

    Title: What's a Private Kanazawa Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Myoryuji, Chaya Districts, and Kenrokuen The itinerary included Myoryuji Temple, arranged through prior communication, while the guests planned to visit Kanazawa Castle and Kenrokuen Garden on their own. Myoryuji was chosen for this tour because some of the guests had developed an interest in ninja through games and wanted to see the so-called "Ninja Temple." In reality, Myoryuji has little to do with ninja; it was designed for defensive purposes related to the Maeda clan, so I think it is better to present it in a way that avoids misunderstanding. After explaining this point in advance, we stopped by a ninja shop in the Nishi Chaya district beforehand. It was crowded so throwing shuriken was not possible, but the guests seemed to enjoy it. I then guided them so they could visit Kenrokuen Garden on their own in the afternoon, showed them a soba restaurant in the Higashi Chaya district, and ended the tour.

    What Is a Private Hakone Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests thoroughly enjoyed a private tour of Hakone, greeted by a magnificent view of Mount Fuji. They fully appreciated the pirate ship cruise from premium seats, the historic Japanese scenery of the cedar tree avenue and Onshi Park, and the harmony with nature that included the foot bath at the Hakone Open-Air Museum, as well as the craftsmanship of the marquetry woodwork. However, they had expected a continental breakfast, but since it was a fish dish without any fruit, they did not eat it. On the way back from the Open-Air Museum, I made a phone call to request a shuttle car, but the person on the receiving end was absent, so I was unable to make the request. These two points left a disappointing impression on the guests. I understand they have requested a continental-style breakfast for the following morning. On the other hand, they found lunch and dinner, including the fish and the Japanese cuisine, to be very delicious, and they were also able to enjoy a satisfying meal at a donburi teahouse.

    What's a Private Anime and Buddhist Art Tour of Nara Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America who love anime. One theme of the tour was how Buddhist art influenced Japanese manga artists. In fact, the Kofuku-ji National Treasure Museum is full of what look like ancestors of manga. The Nio guardian statues at the Nandaimon Gate of Todai-ji Temple look just like manga characters. The two of the Four Heavenly Kings in the Great Buddha Hall also resemble manga. Even crawling through the hole in the pillar feels like something out of manga. The roots of Japanese manga may well lie in Nara (or so I like to say, with a smile). It was a tour that inspired the research theme, "Manga comes from Buddhism." Come to think of it, Osamu Tezuka's "Buddha" and "Phoenix" are both rooted in Buddhism as well.

    Hello! Thank you for choosing Nara! I bet you’ll love Nara. I specialize in Nara because Nara is the unique place where in one day you can cover the history and religions of Japan from the ancient times to the post war era while enjoying rambling in the UNESCO World Heritage park, having communication with lovely deer, surrounded with the beautiful nature.
    I grew up in Nara, went university in Kyoto, enjoyed teaching at high schools and a university in Osaka. The three former capitals of Japan are home to me.
    After retiring from teaching I began guiding so that I can meet various people from various corners of the world with a variety of cultures and backgrounds. Each time I guide, I find it hugely rewarding because I learn a lot from my guests sharing the history, culture and all that I know about Nara, Kyoto and Osaka.
    I used to be a marathon runner, mountain climber and skier though I am not much of them anymore.
    What I especially recommend is to stay in Nara a couple of days and enjoy communicating with friendly deer while visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Nara in early morning, temples and shrines at night are well worth experiencing.

    What Is a Private Half-Day Tour of Himeji Castle Like? A Licensed Guide's Report Today's guests were visitors from North America, visiting Japan for the first time. We met at Himeji Station and toured Castle View, Himeji Castle, Koko-en Garden, and Egret Himeji. There was no need to wait at the Himeji Castle ticket counter, but there were times when we had to wait due to congestion inside the main keep. The guests already had reserved-seat Shinkansen tickets from Himeji Station to Shin-Kobe Station (after sightseeing in Himeji, they planned to visit the Kobe Nunobiki Herb Garden and Kobe Harborland), so I paid careful attention to the time allocation as we proceeded. At both Himeji Castle and Koko-en Garden, we focused mainly on explanations and taking photographs. At the final stop, Egret Himeji, after viewing Himeji Castle from the rooftop observation deck, the guests enjoyed some Himeji sake at the Ryuriki shop on the first floor. We parted ways at Himeji Station, and the guests appeared very satisfied with the tour.
