Can You Do a Private Tour of Tokyo's Old Downtown and Quiet Neighborhoods? A Licensed Guide's Report The guest was a visitor from North America on a roughly two-week trip to Japan. They had come once before on a cruise about ten years ago and stayed for around three days, but said it was almost like a first visit. Having some familiarity with Japanese culture, the guest preferred places where ordinary Japanese people go rather than the more crowded, typical tourist spots. After visiting Meiji Shrine, we headed to the old downtown district of Fukagawa. The guest was struck by the powerful drums of the goma fire ritual at the Fudo temple, and at Tomioka Hachiman Shrine we happened to come across a baby's first shrine visit. Next, I guided them through the even quieter residential area of Yanaka-Nezu-Sendagi, where they were able to take in the atmosphere of everyday local life.

    • 17:00 Mimaru Suites Kyoto Central

What's a Private One-Day Kyoto Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from North America. The itinerary was: Hotel → Fushimi Inari Taisha → Sanjusangendo → lunch (a Kyoto cuisine restaurant) → Gion Shirakawa → Nishiki Market → Kinkaku-ji → the Bamboo Grove Path in Arashiyama → Hotel. The unexpected challenge was the congestion at Fushimi Inari. Although the number of tourists was on the lower side due to the poor weather, everyone stopped to take photos while holding umbrellas, so the line at the Senbon Torii came to a complete standstill, and I dealt with this by taking a shortcut. The rest of the itinerary went largely smoothly. For lunch, the guests enjoyed a shabu-shabu set meal. They especially loved the ponzu sauce and said, "We'd love to take this same flavor home with us." The guests were Dodgers fans and mentioned seeing player Shohei Ohtani everywhere on street corners across Japan. In connection with this, tying it to the mandala illustration on the wall of the shop at Sanjusangendo, I talked about the mandala chart Ohtani created during his high school days. I explained that during last year's illegal gambling incident involving his interpreter, Japanese people had watched his personal growth since his high school days, so there were almost no voices doubting him, and there was a difference in how it was perceived compared to North America; the guests listened with interest and nodded along. Also, at Kinkaku-ji, they asked why the (Ashikaga) shogun built such a gorgeous golden pavilion while the Kyoto Imperial Palace, the residence of the emperor who held greater authority than the shogun, was so simple. I explained that this was a matter of aesthetic sensibility, and they understood. In addition, topics such as how Japanese people relate to religion, the electricity situation and nuclear power policy, and the spread of electric vehicles came up in conversation.

What Is a Rainy-Day Private Tokyo Walking Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from Oceania. The schedule we had discussed and decided on in advance had been planned on the assumption of clear weather, so we made several last-minute changes. In the morning there was fairly heavy rain, and we walked through the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace from Hirakawamon Gate to Otemon Gate, but one of the guest's shoes got completely soaked. We had planned to go to Takeshita Street next, but since it is a district popular with young people and the street is narrow, I thought carrying umbrellas would make it difficult without bumping into others, so we changed the plan to Ginza. Since one of the guests wanted to look at waterproof shoes, we went to a shoe store, but the sneakers there had too much decoration and were not to their liking. Wanting at least to buy some socks, we went to a lifestyle goods store, where they found simple water-repellent sneakers, tried them on, and made a purchase. One of the guests also liked some of the clothing at the same store, but since the size would have to be ordered in, they did not purchase it, and instead bought some jelly as a gift. There was a request to have lunch in the Shinjuku Golden Gai area, but partly due to the rain, all of the places that were open were operating as bars (as of 12:40). Since the guests wanted to have something light like a sandwich, they had sandwiches at a coffee shop. Finally we went to Tokyo Tower, and although the poor weather meant the distant views were not visible, they were able to see the nearby scenery very well and enjoyed it greatly.

    Hi, I’m Sam.
I am happy to welcome you all to Japan.

Since I was a child, my parents welcomed many international students into our home and I had many opportunities to interact with them. My mother is a translator, and I have always seen her guiding foreigners around Japan, so it was natural for me to start doing the same.

I am good at guiding people to popular places such as Shibuya, Harajuku, Shinjuku, and Asakusa, as well as photogenic spots in the Tokyo metropolitan area. Since I was a child, I’ve watched anime like Pokémon and played Nintendo games, and I still buy around 100 manga comic books a month. I love shopping in Akihabara! I currently live in Urayasu City, Chiba, so close that I can see fireworks from Disneyland from my house every night.

Please feel free to ask me anything!

What Is a 4-Hour Private Hakodate Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America, so I gave them a hanko (personal seal) engraved with a Japanese family name as a gift. Goryokaku was at a wonderful time for cherry blossoms, and they took many photos. They asked many questions and I could sense their attachment to their ancestry, and our conversation grew lively and wide-ranging, including comparisons with present-day Japan. I enjoyed it very much as well. I am attaching a photo (usable) taken at a Japanese goods shop in the Red Brick Warehouse shopping mall where we said our farewells. It was a short 4-hour tour (I omitted the morning market since they could visit it on their own), but we packed in Goryokaku, Mount Hakodate, Motomachi, and the Red Brick Warehouse. I believe their satisfaction was high, and they even gave me a souvenir. As for purchasing sakura tea, it is a part of culture that even we Japanese are beginning to forget, but I explained it and they went on to buy some.

Title: What Is a Private Mount Fuji and Shizuoka Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The weather was excellent that day, and we were able to enjoy beautiful views of Mount Fuji from various locations. Since I had been informed in advance that some of the guests would require accessibility support, I arranged a large-size taxi and conducted a route inspection and flow check the day before, which proved very effective. In addition, the decisions to remove the Nihondaira Ropeway and Kunozan Toshogu Shrine from the itinerary, and to reserve a beach-capable wheelchair for Miho no Matsubara, greatly contributed to smooth operation. Among the guests, some also wished to avoid walking. Assisting with getting in and out of the vehicle, restroom support, and accommodating requests for smoking breaks meant that many situations required extra time for movement and preparation, so the time spent at each sightseeing spot tended to be relatively short. However, the conversations and exchanges along the way were very enjoyable, with many questions about history, culture, and society. As these are areas of strength for me, we were able to share a very fulfilling time. At the same time, there were also many questions about plants and trees, and I strongly felt the need to deepen my knowledge in this field going forward. As the day happened to coincide with Children's Day, the guests were very pleased that I could provide special explanations and experiences involving carp streamers, shrines, and events at parks. There were also active questions about religious education in Japan, which led to a meaningful and engaging dialogue. At the end of the tour, I received a tip of 5,000 yen as a token of appreciation.

This is my 21st year as a teacher. I am the director of the International Affairs Department at a private school in Shizuoka Prefecture, and I am leading international education. I have experience in accepting teachers and international students from all over the world, and I would like to show you the best of Japan with my warm hospitality, which emphasizes cross-cultural exchange. As an interpreter, I have had experience working as a personal interpreter for soccer and rugby coaches from overseas. As a tour guide, I have led many tours for visitors from overseas (mainly people involved in education and international students) to experience the local areas of Shizuoka.

Title: What's a Private Contemporary Art Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors currently based in Europe. One of them was visiting Japan for the first time, while another had visited Japan a few years earlier. After Tokyo, they planned to visit Kyoto and Naoshima as well. They had a strong interest in contemporary art. Right after the tour began, near their hotel, they took photographs in front of Louise Bourgeois's "Maman," installed in front of the Mori Tower at Roppongi Hills. When I mentioned that one reason the work is not fixed to the ground relates to earthquake countermeasures, they showed keen interest. They were also pleased when I introduced the National Art Center, Tokyo, because of its unique architecture. As for the Yayoi Kusama Museum, they had been interested but had not been able to secure a reservation. They also planned to visit an acquaintance's private gallery the following day, and when they asked me about its location, I looked at the address and found it happened to be near my own home, which made it easy to explain. Furthermore, when they asked me to recommend museums where they could view contemporary art in Tokyo, I recommended the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (MOT) and the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (MOMAT), among others. Since they had eaten a substantial breakfast, they said they did not particularly need lunch, but as the temperature rose, I encouraged them to stay hydrated by buying bottled drinks from vending machines. The Nakamise shopping street in Asakusa was quite crowded, and gave the impression that it was not really to their taste. From Shibuya to Roppongi, we went via Nakameguro in order to explain the nearest station to the private gallery they planned to visit the next day. We got off at Roppongi Station heading toward their hotel, but since they wanted to stop by Tokyo Midtown Roppongi for shopping rather than going to Roppongi Hills, we parted ways at the station.

What's a Full-Day Private Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Zojoji, Hamarikyu, Tsukiji, Ginza, and Shibuya The guests were visiting Japan for the first time, arriving from Europe, with one of them currently based in the Middle East. After sightseeing in Tokyo, they were scheduled to board a cruise touring various parts of Japan. Since they also planned to visit Kyoto, I decided to show them more of the distinctly Tokyo side of the city rather than focusing on temples and shrines. That said, I did guide them to Zojoji Temple, whose Sangedatsumon gate is currently under restoration and covered, so it cannot be passed through, but it is also a place once visited by King Charles III of the United Kingdom during his time as Crown Prince, so I introduced it together with Tokyo Tower. At Azabudai Hills, we only saw the entrance, but I introduced teamLab, which is highly popular as a contemporary attraction. At Hamarikyu, I explained the vast daimyo garden, the tidal pond, and the duck hunting grounds. By coincidence, it happened to be the season when the pine buds are tended, and a gardener was offering explanations. The guests listened attentively to my interpretation and looked with great interest at the actual pine buds. For the sushi lunch in Tsukiji, I arranged counter seats so they could watch the sushi chef prepare the sushi right in front of them. Of course, there are sushi restaurants in London as well, but they were delighted that this was their first time eating sushi at a counter. After lunch, I introduced the Kabukiza Theatre and we walked through Ginza toward the Imperial Palace. As it was a holiday afternoon, the main Ginza street was a pedestrian paradise, and they seemed to enjoy that atmosphere as well. We walked at a relaxed pace, but since they had arrived in Japan the day before, jet lag set in and they grew tired toward the end of the tour. We skipped the originally planned Meiji Shrine, and after experiencing crossing the Shibuya Scramble Crossing on foot, we headed toward the Hotel. One of the guests plans to write an essay about this trip to Japan and took many photographs. It also came up in conversation that one of the guests and I happened to be the same age, which added a sense of closeness, and thanks to their broad international experience, the conversation never lapsed and covered a wide range of topics. Although we were tired, it was a truly fulfilling tour.

Title: What Can You See on a Rainy-Day Private Kyoto Tour? A Licensed Guide's Report The guest was a solo traveler from North America visiting Japan for the first time. Originally, the plan had been to tour Kyoto over two days with several people, but the others were unable to come, so the guest traveled alone. Since it was raining from the morning, we changed the plan and first went to the Kyoto National Museum. The guest looked at the special exhibition very attentively, and we ended up spending nearly two hours there. Because of some back discomfort, we decided to cancel the visit to Kiyomizu-dera Temple. As the guest enjoys museums, we next went to the Museum of Kyoto. Here too, the guest examined the exhibits in detail and asked frequent questions. Finally, we visited Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, and the guest seemed to like its quiet and calm atmosphere. The tour proceeded in a pleasant mood throughout.

Thanks for joining our tour. I’m Hiro Nakagawa, assigned to be your guide for this tour. I was eligible as a National Licensed Tour Guide in 2017. I have guided many tourists from overseas since then. Japan is a beautiful country with full of various attractions. Please enjoy your time in this country to the fullest. I will help you with that. What are you interested in this country? I will introduce this country’s long history, traditional culture, beautiful seasonal highlights, and delicious food to you. Please let me know your preferences. If it’s other than which I mentioned, I’m preparing it for you as much as possible. Let’s enjoy the trip together!

Title: What Is a Private Transfer Assist Service Like at Hiroshima Station? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group visiting from Europe. This was a special case: at the request of a travel agency, the assignment was to escort the guests from their hotel on Miyajima to the Shinkansen platform at Hiroshima Station. Since I was unable to reach them via messaging app, I called the hotel, and I was relieved to confirm that they were staying there. The guests were on a family trip and did some shopping at Hiroshima Station to use up their remaining Suica balance. Because the coin lockers were not reasonably priced, I kept watch over the guests' luggage in front of the ticket counter for over an hour. Feeling tired, I took off my hat and sat down, and a kind elderly passerby, perhaps mistaking me for a roadside Jizo statue, left some small coins in front of me. I must apologize — I exaggerated that story a little, as the waiting time was quite long.

Originally, I’m a cycling guide doing cycling tours all over Japan.
But, already done Hiroshima & Miyajima tour more than 400 times.
I traveled many countries in my younger days. I traveled Europe, US, China, India, US, Mexico, Peru Australia, NZ, and so on.
I decided to use this experience to become a guide.
I’m afraid but no tipping required, because cycling guides are not allowed to have tipping in my association. And you do not need to pay for my lunch, because my lunch is prepared by our group.
Please do not hesitate to ask me anything, I’ll change the plan according to your requests.
Thank you for your understanding and please stay connected.

Tokyo in Half a Day: Kiyosumi Garden & Fukagawa Edo Museum

    Tour Itinerary

    • 13:30 meet at the hotel
    • 14:30-15:30 Kiyosumi Garden
    • 15:45-17:00 Fukagawa Edo Museum
    • 17:30 Hotel Metropolitan Ikebukuro

The guests requested sightseeing spots with few stairs, so I chose Kiyosumi Garden and the Fukagawa Edo Museum as the destinations. At Kiyosumi Garden, the guests enjoyed strolling and taking photographs. They were interested in how the scenery changed with each step around the pond, and they also showed interest in the varieties and scents of the trees. At the Fukagawa Edo Museum, while viewing the small shops and merchant residences of the late Edo period, the guests were interested in the ways of daily life and the uses and meanings of the furnishings. They were also curious about the reasons for having both a Buddhist altar and a Shinto household shrine.

Hello, I am Yumiko Hoshida. I was born in Osaka and live in Tokyo now. I have been to UK (ESL) and The USA (Executive Secretary course) as a student.
After I came back to Japan, I worked at Osaka EXPO as an interpreter. And then I worked at foreign companies at Osaka and Tokyo. After resignation, I have got the national guiding license. I have been enjoying guiding sightseeing spots and showing Japanese history & culture etc. to the guests from overseas. It is really wonderful for me to spend time with foreign guests in Japan.
I am very looking forward to welcoming foreign guests.
I do hope to see YOU soon!
