    Title: What's a Private Walking Tour of Kobe Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Ikuta Shrine, Kitano, and Nankinmachi The guests today were a group visiting Japan from North America. They have family living in Osaka, so they have visited Japan many times. Today we met at JR Sannomiya Station to begin the tour. Since the guests said they "wanted to learn about the history of Kobe," we first visited Ikuta Shrine. I explained that Ikuta Shrine has over 1,800 years of history and is mentioned in the Nihon Shoki, that the name Kobe originates from this shrine, that Taira no Kiyomori once relocated the capital to Fukuhara, that Kobe was the stage of the Genpei War, and that it suffered great damage from air raids during World War II and the Great Earthquake of 1995. After this, we headed to Kitano. In Kitano, I explained in order the opening of the Port of Kobe, the development of the foreign settlement, and the Kitano Ijinkan (foreign residences) district. Since the guests were strongly interested in the story of the Jewish refugees (the "visas for life" issued by Chiune Sugihara), we went via the former site of the Kobe Jewcom, where Jewish refugees once lived, and then visited Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, the Moegi House, and the Kansai Jewish Synagogue in that order, taking a short break at Kobe Kitano Nosta. After this, we passed through the former foreign settlement and visited Nankinmachi and the Motomachi shopping arcade, ending the tour at JR Motomachi Station. The weather today was fine (though a little hot), and the guests were pleased.

    Title: What's a Private One-Day Kyoto Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Fushimi Inari, Arashiyama, and Kinkaku-ji The guests were visitors from Oceania. The itinerary was: Hotel → Fushimi Inari Taisha → the Bamboo Grove Path in Arashiyama → lunch (a coffee shop chain) → Kinkaku-ji → Hotel. Both were friendly and easy to interact with, and along the way we were able to chat openly about family and work. The questions I received included the retirement age in Japan, the pension system, the minimum wage and how taxes are handled, and the lives of Buddhist monks. At each sightseeing spot—including the approach paths leading up to each site's highlight—they kept exclaiming "beautiful, beautiful," and at Kinkaku-ji they took an interest even in the priests' quarters and the abbot's hall, taking photos. They wished to keep lunch light, so on the way from Arashiyama to Kinkaku-ji we stopped at a coffee shop chain where they enjoyed sandwiches, and they were impressed by the great value. They also seemed to find train travel very comfortable, praising Japan's railway system, including its punctuality and cleanliness. They purchased souvenirs such as a Kinkaku-ji magnet and chopsticks, bought and enjoyed taiyaki from a stall, and spent the day in a relaxed and enjoyable way. A notable stop on the tour was Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. Kinkaku-ji is a Zen temple in Kyoto whose top two floors are covered in gold leaf, and it is one of Japan's most iconic landmarks. Originally built as a retirement villa in the late 14th century, it was later converted into a temple and is set beside a reflective pond that creates a striking mirror image of the pavilion.

Some of the guests enjoyed fishing as a hobby and had caught tuna, so they were very interested in the auction. In North America there is a similar fishing method, long wire fishing, and we had a lively discussion comparing the differences in fishing techniques, which was very enjoyable. The guests were amazed at how each tuna was auctioned off in just a few seconds and how calmly and efficiently the auction proceeded. They were also surprised by the sheer number of tuna lined up at the auction hall. At the sushi restaurant, each of them ordered their favorite sushi and thoroughly enjoyed it. They were especially impressed by the fatty tuna, saying it seemed to melt in their mouths. At the Tsukiji Outer Market, they visited a specialty shop for Japanese knives and bought two knives for filleting fish along with a grater, leaving very satisfied. A notable stop on the tour was the Tsukiji Outer Market, a bustling district lined with shops and stalls selling fresh seafood, produce, kitchenware, and traditional Japanese knives. Long known as a center of Tokyo's food culture, it remains a popular destination where visitors can experience the sights, sounds, and flavors of the city's culinary heritage.

    Can You Do a Private Day Tour in Japan with a Licensed Guide? A Guide's Report on Art and History The guests were a group visiting from North America. Some of the guests had Japanese acquaintances and were studying the Japanese language. All of them were well acquainted with Japanese culture and views on religion, which made guiding them very easy. They were wonderful conversationalists, so I was able to spend a very enjoyable day with them. One of the guests seemed very interested in Japanese architecture, painting, and sculpture. At the museum in Shoyoen Garden in particular, this guest looked carefully at the paintings and said they especially loved the simplicity, care, and refreshing quality of leaving blank space within works that were otherwise painted in very fine detail. All of them also enjoyed talking about history, and we were able to have deep conversations, including discussions about Chinese history. A notable stop on the tour was Shoyoen Garden. Shoyoen is a Japanese strolling garden located in Nikko, known for its tranquil ponds, carefully arranged stones, and seasonal plantings that create changing scenery throughout the year. The garden is often associated with Rinnoji Temple, and its adjacent museum displays artworks and cultural treasures, making it a peaceful spot where visitors can appreciate both traditional landscape design and Japanese art in a single setting.

    What's a Private Shopping Tour of Tokyo Like? Tsukiji, Ginza, Asakusa and Kappabashi — A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were visitors from North America. From the outset, they expressed a wish to focus the tour mainly on shopping, so we visited a variety of shops. We first went to the Tsukiji Outer Market, where they purchased tea, and then they bought high-quality items at a department store food hall in Ginza and at a specialty shop in Kyobashi. Moving on to Asakusa, I explained Senso-ji Temple and the surrounding buildings at the culture and tourism center, and after walking through Nakamise Street from Kaminarimon Gate, we moved to a sushi restaurant a little away from the approach for lunch. There, after enjoying sashimi, we talked about green tea, Japanese sweets, Japanese cuisine, and more. After returning to the approach, the guests paid their respects at the main hall and then moved to Kappabashi. At Kappabashi, they visited several specialty shops and enjoyed shopping, purchasing kitchenware among other things. We traveled by subway and JR, and I saw them back to the Hotel to conclude the tour. The guests enjoyed shopping in each area, and although Kappabashi in particular was crowded with many tourists and took some time, it was good that they were able to purchase most of the items they had planned. A notable stop on the tour was Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa. Senso-ji is the oldest temple in Tokyo, founded in the 7th century, and is one of the city's most famous and most visited religious sites. Visitors enter through the iconic Kaminarimon Gate with its large red lantern and walk along Nakamise Street, a shopping street lined with stalls selling traditional snacks and souvenirs, before reaching the temple's main hall.

    Title: What's a Private Tokyo Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Meiji Shrine, the Imperial Palace, and Asakusa Body: The guests were a group visiting from Europe. They used to live near where I had once worked, and we enjoyed talking about those days. One of the guests had previously worked at a company and had held a strong interest in Japanese culture since that time. We began at Meiji Shrine, where I explained Shinto and Japanese shrines as a background to Japanese culture, and the guests seemed to understand very well. However, one of the guests was suddenly struck by a headache and we had to take a short rest on the spot. During that time, they were able to see a traditional Shinto wedding ceremony being held within the shrine grounds, and they appeared deeply moved. At the next stop, the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, I spoke about the Edo period and the relationship between Japan and Europe through Dejima. The guests already seemed to be somewhat familiar with this and appeared to understand it well. Since they planned to explore the Nakasendo after Tokyo, I explained the relationship between the feudal lords' processions of the Edo period and the Imperial Palace, and they were pleased, saying that understanding the historical background was very helpful. Finally, we headed to Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa, where the tour came to an end. A notable stop on the tour was Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa. Senso-ji is Tokyo's oldest temple, founded in the 7th century, and it is dedicated to Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy. Visitors approach the main hall through the iconic Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate) and walk along Nakamise-dori, a lively shopping street lined with stalls selling traditional snacks and souvenirs. The temple remains one of the most popular and atmospheric cultural landmarks in Tokyo.

    Before becoming a tour guide, I worked for a major steelmaking company as an engineer for many years. During my career, I lived and worked in both Germany and the United States for a total of five years. These experiences helped me understand different cultures and ways of thinking, which now helps me connect easily with guests from around the world.

    After retirement, I chose a second career as a tour guide because I truly enjoy meeting people from different countries and sharing Japanese culture, history, and daily life. I have been working as a guide for more than nine years and continue to enjoy every tour.

    I currently live in Tokyo, but I was born and raised in Kobe, near Osaka, and my family roots are in Kyoto. As a result, I have extensive knowledge not only of Tokyo but also of Kyoto, Osaka, and many other parts of Japan. I enjoy introducing both famous landmarks and hidden local gems that many visitors might otherwise miss.

    I am energetic, friendly, and very sociable. I always try to create tours that are relaxed, flexible, and tailored to my guests’ interests.

    Travel is one of my greatest passions, especially visiting hot spring resorts. I have visited more than 80 onsen destinations throughout Japan, giving me a deep appreciation of Japanese culture and regional traditions.

    Title: What's a Private Walking Tour of Fukuoka from Hakata Port Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests were a group from North America. They arrived at the exit of the Hakata Port Terminal at 9:00 a.m. as arranged. At first, three of them came, as I was told one person was resting on the ship and would join us later, so including me we were four, and we took one taxi to our first destination, Tochoji Temple. I guided them around the five-story pagoda, the main hall, and the Great Buddha of Fukuoka. From Tochoji Temple, we walked to the Hakata Machiya Folk Museum. Here they viewed traditional crafts of Hakata and a video about the Gion Yamakasa festival. The fourth member of the group also joined us here. We took a break and had some tea at a cafe. Next I guided them to Kushida Shrine. This place has many highlights, such as the zodiac compass plate, statues of horses and oxen, the ginkgo trees, the test-of-strength stones, and the Hakata Gion Yamakasa float. While paying attention to what the guests were most interested in, I gave careful explanations individually. From Kushida Shrine, we walked through the Nakasu Kawabata shopping arcade to Shogetsudo, where they could enjoy painting Hakata dolls, which they had requested to visit. Here you can try painting from around 2,000 to 3,000 yen for small items. They spent about an hour happily painting Hakata dolls. Finally, they said they wanted to shop at a drugstore, so I guided them along the way through ACROS Fukuoka and Fukuoka City Hall, which has displays about sister cities, and then to a store inside the One Fukuoka Building that opened last year. At Fukuoka City Hall we first lined up for a shuttle bus, but in the end we took a taxi back to the Hakata Port Cruise Terminal, and the tour ended at 15:00. I was able to guide them to temples and shrines rich in highlights that represent Fukuoka, lead them through the long arcade shopping street, and let them experience painting Hakata dolls as they had hoped. The weather was also fine, so I believe they were satisfied.

    What's a Private One-Day Disaster-Preparedness and Shopping Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report I guided a group visiting from North America. Because some of the guests enjoyed shopping, wanted to try a disaster-preparedness experience, hoped to collect goshuin (shrine and temple stamps), and requested a lunch in a park, we visited the Sona Area Tokyo disaster-preparedness facility in Ariake after the Imperial Palace Outer Garden. The experience began with a scenario of encountering a magnitude 7 earthquake inside an elevator, and participants were handed a tablet and progressed by answering quizzes in English. At the Imperial Palace, some of the guests had suddenly felt sleepy from jet lag and had wanted to head back to the Hotel, so I was relieved to see their eyes light up and to see how much they enjoyed the experience. That said, we got the very first elevator question wrong and had a good laugh about it. On the way to Ginza, the gentle swaying of the Yurikamome line brought on drowsiness again, but at ITOYA in Ginza the guests became energized once more, delighted by the stationery and enjoying themselves so much that it was almost a case of "are you really buying more?" At Asahi Inari Shrine, where the first goshuin was received, the staff were very kind and specially stamped a goshuin into the stamp book the guests had, and additionally gave stickers as a little souvenir, which delighted the guests greatly. After eating yakitori purchased at Mitsukoshi in Shiba Park, we went to Zojoji Temple to buy a goshuincho and a goshuin, and then headed to the final stop, Tokyo Tower. Despite dozens of yawns along the way, the guests made it to the observation deck and were full of energy again while enjoying a favorite soft-serve ice cream. On the train back to the Hotel, I sensed that fatigue was reaching its limit, so I posed a final question to keep them engaged, and we arrived safely at the Hotel. I hope the guests can enjoy the rest of the trip without any health troubles. The warm way the guests looked out for and stayed close to one another, even while cycling between excitement and sleepiness, was heartwarming and lovely, and I felt they were a wonderful group. A notable stop on the tour was Zojoji Temple. Zojoji is a major Buddhist temple in Tokyo, located near Tokyo Tower, and serves as the main temple of the Jodo (Pure Land) sect in the Kanto region. Founded in the 14th century and later associated with the Tokugawa shogunate, it is known for its striking Sangedatsumon main gate and its scenic setting against the backdrop of Tokyo Tower.

    What Is a Private Walking Tour of Onomichi and Senkoji Temple Like? A Licensed Guide's Report The guests contacted me via a messaging app shortly before 10:00 on the day of the tour, asking whether we could start one hour earlier and also add a visit to the Onomichi City Museum of Art. I agreed and arrived at the designated Hotel at 11:35, but the guests had not yet arrived. They arrived around 12:10, after which they checked in, arranged breakfast and a taxi for the next morning, carried their luggage to the room, and got ready. We were finally able to confirm the itinerary starting at 12:35. The guests were very pleased with the newly added Onomichi City Museum of Art, including the annex designed by Tadao Ando and the exhibition by Motoi Yamamoto. They also kindly told me they were glad to have me as their guide. Thanks in part to the fine weather, they marveled throughout at the views of the Onomichi Channel and the Shimanami Kaido from Mount Senkoji, as well as the natural scenery of Senkoji Park. I was especially struck by how they photographed birds and searched for them using AI, petted a cat they encountered, and carefully took photos of religious structures such as Buddhist statues, Jizo statues, and guardian lion-dogs.
