Title: What Is a Private Tuna Auction and Toyosu Market Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report
The guests were visitors from North America. One of the guests had long worked in the food industry and was interested in Japan's tuna auctions, which was the motivation for joining the tour. For that reason, after consulting with me by email in advance, the guests applied for the lottery for the special viewing deck and were fortunate enough to win, allowing us to visit the first-floor viewing deck. However, the taxi did not arrive on time to pick them up, so the guests reached the market 10 minutes late and were unable to secure a top-priority number or a good viewing spot. In addition, there were more special viewers than usual today, and half of the reduced deck was occupied by an inspection group from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, so it was not possible to let them properly see the fresh tuna auction. Because of this, we moved early to the general deck on the third floor, where they watched the latter part of the frozen tuna auction and enjoyed the atmosphere of the bidding.
Meanwhile, at Tsukiji we came across an intermediate wholesaler cutting up tuna. I purchased a pack of fresh tuna for my own home and negotiated with the wholesaler, saying, "Since I've bought the tuna, it's okay to take photos, right?" The guests were then given permission to take photos and videos, which delighted them. (My own household unexpectedly enjoyed bluefin tuna for lunch and was quite pleased, ha ha.)
At a sushi restaurant in Toyosu, they enjoyed a full course of tuna, and were greatly satisfied to learn that a single tuna can offer different flavors such as lean meat, marinated tuna, medium fatty tuna, premium fatty tuna, seared tuna, and scraped meat from the bones.
As inbound tourism increases toward the cherry blossom season, it is expected that the number of people at the special auction viewing will also grow, making it harder to see. When guests consult me about the lottery for special viewing in the future, I will make sure to convey today's realities clearly, so that they are not left saying, "I didn't expect this; how disappointing." Today's guests were happy, saying, "We could hardly see the fresh tuna auction, but thanks to your buying tuna from the wholesaler, we were able to record the tuna cutting," which put me at ease.

This was our first time visiting a fish market, and from the time we booked the experience, Toru-san has been amazing. He helped us get to Toyosu market, where the tuna auction takes place, at the right time to get the best views and explained everything about how the auction works and made sure we didn’t miss anything. (You will need a knowledgeable tour guide because everything happens so fast and you might miss it!) We learned so much during such a short time about how the delicious tuna you eat at a sushi restaurant ends up in front of you. After the auction Toru-san took us to Okame, a great sushi restaurant, where we got to experience delicious sushi breakfast. Our next stop was Tsukiji market, and again we got to try all sorts of food and learn more about the market and got to meet some of the vendors. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly. If you are interested in cooking, Japanese cuisine, or know someone home, this tour will give you the opportunity to do some shopping for unique souvenirs.
We had to get to Toyosu market before 5 am, and while you might think it’s too early, but why not do something fun and delicious with your jetlag? It was so worth it and I’m glad we chose to spend our first morning in Tokyo with Toru-san. The other advantage of being so early was that the market was not as crowded and we got to enjoy our time without having to wait in line.
Thank you, Toru-san!

Toru was a fantastic guide and made our experience one to remember. He picked us up
from the hotel and clearly knew how to be there early to get a good view. He also took us to
a delicious sushi place thereafter which the whole family enjoyed.
