What Is a Private Family Tour of Tokyo's Ginza and Nihonbashi Like? A Licensed Guide's Report

Tokyo had been cold enough for a little snow the day before, but fortunately the snow and rain had stopped, allowing the tour to begin. The guests were a group visiting Japan for the first time from North America. One member of the group was a bright child who loves Pokémon, and the tour was described as a trip made especially for this child. There had been no detailed requests or itinerary discussions before the day itself, but to fulfill their wishes, I arranged to include a Pokémon Center in the plan. We first passed through Tsukiji Market — which they had visited by taxi for dinner the previous evening but where they had not been able to see any of the market's usual bustle — and made our way to Ginza. One of the guests, who had spent time living in various places across different regions before, asked many questions about the situation in Tokyo. Comparing the relationship between Toyosu Market and Tsukiji Market to a similar case of relocating a fish market elsewhere, they understood the situation by relating it to places they were already familiar with. Meanwhile, another in the group was interested in various kinds of shopping, and said they would do the actual shopping on another occasion by themselves but wanted to know the locations. Since all the specific shops they mentioned were located along Ginza's main street, we walked from Ginza 8-chome all the way to 1-chome, and I introduced Onitsuka Tiger, UNIQLO, Café Paulista, Shiseido, LION, GSIX, Mitsukoshi, WAKO, Kyukyodo, Itoya, and the whisky museum, with the guests noting the places they wanted to revisit. In front of the Nissan showroom, some of the guests, who love cars, took photos with a supercar in the background. Although in daily life they mostly travel by car and do not usually walk much, they said they enjoyed the tour in Tokyo with all its walking.

For lunch, I guided them to a Japanese restaurant with wide windows overlooking Tokyo Station. They were very fond of the sunken kotatsu-style seating. Storing their shoes in a lockable shoe box and keeping the key was also a new experience. They were satisfied with the flavors, saying "everything is truly delicious." One member of the group finished with an additional matcha ice cream topped with sweet red beans plus kuzumochi, and their fondness for sweets was also evident from the several Japanese confections they had purchased at a long-established Japanese sweets shop on Ginza's main street. After lunch, we completed the purchase of Shinkansen tickets at the ticket office at Tokyo Station, then passed through the Yaesu exit to Nihonbashi Takashimaya. Some of the group shopped at the Pokémon Center, buying a large bag full of items. In the meantime, I guided another member of the group around the Takashimaya sales floors in general, and they purchased skincare products and lipstick at the cosmetics counter. I had initially planned to guide them to Asakusa from there, but when I asked their wishes, they said that fatigue from the time difference was setting in, so instead of heading to Asakusa, they decided to do their own shopping at UNIQLO in Ginza and then return to the Hotel by taxi. It was just around the time that rain began to fall again. As a result, the activities ended up focused on shopping, but given that the purpose had been described as a trip for the child, it seems to have been a route that the child greatly enjoyed.
