Tour Itinerary in Detail
Meeting at Hotel (changed from Hotel) at 8:00, the group explored Tokyo until the tour ended at 14:45. The day ran to 6 hours and 45 minutes from start to finish. It included lunch at Harajuku Kyushu Jangara Ramen at 13:00.
The itinerary covered Tsukiji (Fish Market, Outer Market, Honganji Temple) at 8:20, Asakusa (Kaminarimon, Sensoji Temple, Hoppy Street) at 10:30, East Gardens of the Imperial Palace at 11:45, Meiji Shrine at 13:30 and Shibuya Scramble Crossing at 14:30.

What Can You See on a Private Tokyo Walking Tour? A Licensed Guide's Report
The guests were visitors from North America. Some of the guests were visiting Japan to see one of the group who is doing research on overtourism countermeasures at a research institution in Kyoto. Interestingly, that member of the group occasionally gave the others gentle reminders about how tourists should behave. Since it was their first visit to Japan, I proposed and carried out the itinerary described above. One of the guests could walk on flat ground without any problem but found stairs difficult, so inside the subway stations I tried to avoid stairs as much as possible and we took breaks here and there, which put us slightly over on time. At the fish market, we were lucky enough to see a tuna cutting demonstration at Kitani. At Tsukiji Hongwanji Temple, I explained about religion in Japan, and since it had a different atmosphere from the temples they had seen in Kyoto, they seemed quite impressed. They enjoyed the Jangara Ramen and finished the soup after adding plenty of red pickled ginger. At Meiji Shrine, it was the season of the Niiname-sai harvest festival, and they were moved to see the huge amount of offerings on display. On a weekday, the Scramble Crossing felt underwhelming and overrated for anyone who knows Times Square. Along with Golden Gai in the daytime, I worry it may eventually be counted among "Tokyo's three biggest disappointments." I almost wish it could be removed from the Tripadvisor and Viator lists.

Hello! My name is Hideki Maruyama. I was born in Osaka and raised in the Greater Tokyo area. I obtained my National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter Certificate in February 2016.
I spent 23 years working at a leading Japanese automotive company, including 7 years posted overseas. I then worked for a German premium automotive manufacturer for 13 years, followed by 6 years as an advisor to a British energy company. Through these roles at global corporations, I developed and refined key skills such as:

2. A deep understanding of business elites and affluent customers
3. The ability to deliver impactful and impressive presentations in English
In addition to my regular duties, I often served as an interpreter for top executives during meetings with foreign government officials. I also had opportunities to introduce aspects of Japan—such as our national character and consumer preferences—to leadership teams in both the German and British companies.

Hideki san was an amazing guide. He was incredibly knowledgable and easy to understand. While planning our time together he helped me understand the various areas things I wanted to see were in. He designed a great tour for us. We had a delicious fresh seafood lunch, and yummy Japanese treat. He even helped me interpret with shopkeepers and my fortunes from the temples. I cannot recommend him enough!

The Best Guide I Had in Japan
Hideki was, without question, my favorite guide during my month-long trip in Japan.
He is an amazing, kind, and genuinely thoughtful gentleman. Before guiding, he had a successful career at a major conglomerate in Tokyo, with experience in business development and marketing, and you can immediately tell that he brings a level of professionalism, perspective, and depth that goes far beyond a standard tour.
What makes Hideki special is that he does this because he truly enjoys it. He told me, “You can use ChatGPT to get all the history, but it’s my job to explain what it can’t.” That perfectly sums up the experience. He did not just point things out or recite facts. He added context, judgment, personality, and a real human understanding of Japan that you simply would not get from a guidebook or online search.
The morning of our tour, I told him I wanted to completely change the plan. Not only did he accept it, he took it as a challenge and immediately sprung into action. A few hours later, I was completely off the beaten path in a place that would never show up in travel guides or magazines. We ate locally, and it ended up being the best lunch I had in Tokyo. We walked around, bantered, explored, and had an amazing time.
Being with Hideki felt less like being on a tour and more like spending the day with an old friend or a fun uncle who happens to know Tokyo incredibly well. His knowledge, friendliness, calm demeanor, and willingness to go above and beyond made the day unforgettable.
I could not recommend Hideki more highly. If you book with him, you are lucky to have his time. Treat him well.

Tripadvisor review: Tokyo 6hr Private Tour with Government-Licensed Guide
Using the subway and minimizing time in the rain we saw many of the most important sites and experienced a variety of interesting and fun neighborhood cultures. We had lunch at a local gem for a fun meal of tempura and rice. Some of the sites were spectacular, all were worthwhile. Time and money well spent.

My wife and I had a great time being shown around the sights of Tokyo by our guide Hideki, walking and travelling on the transport network. We were able to learn about some of the history and culture of Japan. The whole day was thoroughly enjoyable and was a great experience. We can highly recommend the private tour with Hideki who was very knowledgeable and helpful and can tailor the tour to meet your interests.
