What's a Private Tokyo Day Tour of Ueno, Asakusa, and the Imperial Palace Like? A Licensed Guide's Report

We met at the hotel on time. In Ueno, I explained the history of Ueno Park, and the guests were already familiar with the term "Meiji Restoration," suggesting they had studied Japanese history to some extent beforehand. There were also questions about vertical and horizontal writing in Japanese, showing a genuine interest in the language itself. While answering questions in that area, I also explained the National Museum of Western Art, Hideyo Noguchi, the National Museum of Nature and Science, the Tokyo National Museum, and more, and they listened very attentively. In Asakusa, we began with the view from Azuma Bridge, then saw Kaminarimon Gate, Nakamise Shopping Street, Hozomon Gate, and the main hall, which they thoroughly enjoyed. Both in Ueno and Asakusa, they showed considerable interest in the five-story pagodas. At the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace as well, they asked many questions centered on history, and I believe they were quite satisfied. A notable stop on the tour was the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace. These gardens occupy the former site of the innermost circles of Edo Castle, which was once the seat of the Tokugawa shogunate. Visitors can explore the remains of the old castle keep's stone foundation as well as beautifully maintained traditional Japanese gardens, offering a peaceful retreat in the heart of Tokyo.

Hello, I’m Masaaki Kurata. I have been conducting walking tours in Asakusa, Ueno, Yanaka and the East Garden of Imperial Palace since I joined an English guide volunteer club in 2016. I worked for 2 U.S. based companies in Tokyo for 41 years and retired in 2023. I developed good communication skills with people from other countries in my long career in those 2 companies. I was born in the suburb of Tokyo and I’m familiar with Tokyo pretty much. Since I retired and do not work for a company any longer, I can be flexible in making itineraries. I really want to make tourists happy by making fun and interesting communication.
