What Does an Off-the-Beaten-Path Private Tour of Tokyo Look Like? A Licensed Guide's Report

The guests were a group visiting from North America. They had arrived in Japan the day before, and after Tokyo they planned to visit Kobe, Kyoto, and other places before returning to Tokyo to meet up with other members of their family and continue sightseeing.

For this tour, I received a request that was quite different from the usual. They said they could visit the sightseeing spots listed in guidebooks on their own, and told me: "What we would like from you is to see places most tourists don't see, places that are not in all the tourist guidebooks. We are more interested in seeing how people live. We would like to lunch at a restaurant at which local people eat. See a neighborhood library." When I received this request by email, I thought for a moment about how to respond, but I concluded it would be good to show them the kinds of places I usually go shopping near my own neighborhood, and I proposed that. They replied that this would be fine, so I guided them along a route covering the Ikejiri-Ohashi area near my home and neighboring Sangenjaya.

After meeting up, I showed them a grocery supermarket and a library I normally visit in Ikejiri-Ohashi, as well as the nearby Meguro Sky Garden, and then went to Chojuan, a soba restaurant in the Ikejiri-Ohashi shopping street. Everyone else there was a local resident, and the guests were delighted to have lunch at exactly the kind of place they had hoped for. After that we went to Sangenjaya, where they enjoyed the view from the observation lobby of Carrot Tower, and then visited several commercial facilities. Finally, I showed them the izakaya and other spots in the alleys of Sancha San-bangai, which has a nostalgic Showa-era atmosphere. Overall it seemed to be just what they had wanted, and they told me they were very happy to have been able to see places that tourists don't normally see. Although we finished earlier than scheduled, they said it was fine to end the tour, so we returned to the Hotel and parted ways there.
