Can You Do a Private Day Tour of Tokyo Covering the Imperial Palace, Shibuya Sky, and Ginza? A Licensed Guide's Report

The guests were senior visitors from North America on their first trip to Japan. Starting the day after this tour, they were scheduled to join a group tour traveling by land, including the Shinkansen, to visit various parts of Japan, including Kyoto. We began at the Imperial Palace. Strolling from Sakuradamon Gate past the Nijubashi Bridge and the Main Gate, we made our way to Tokyo Station. After showing them the Shinkansen platforms at the Yaesu exit, we boarded the Yamanote Line and headed to Shibuya. At the guests' request, they had purchased tickets for Shibuya Sky before coming to Japan, and we went up to the observation facility, which they had reserved for 11:00. The weather was fine, and we were able to take commemorative photos at the scenic spot without much of a wait. One of the guests found the open-air atmosphere of Shibuya Sky very pleasant, and I helped take photos of them lying on the hammock. Having their built-up expectations fulfilled exactly as hoped, they were greatly satisfied, calling it "the highlight of the day." For the move to the next destination, since one of the guests wanted to avoid the subway, they requested a taxi from Shibuya. However, when we headed to the taxi stand, there was a very long line, and taxis did not seem to be arriving frequently. So I moved to a spot where it would be easier to catch a ride and tried to call a taxi via an app, and while I was looking at my phone screen, one of the guests quickly raised a hand and caught a passing taxi. Grateful for their quick action, we moved on to Ginza. Two days earlier, I had received an email message that one of the guests wanted to buy a rare luxury watch in Ginza, and since I had identified a store most likely to carry it, we went there directly. Unfortunately, what they were looking for was not found, and we checked a few other stores as well, but in the end it proved fruitless. Giving up, we walked along the pedestrian-only main street of Ginza and were heading toward a knife shop that another of the guests wished to visit. As we passed in front of Ginza YAMAHA, one of the guests reacted strongly and wanted to stop in, and when I asked, it turned out they played the piano. First they tried out instruments in the keyboard section on the fifth floor, and when we came down to the first floor, they took notice of a grand piano (C3) created in 2000 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Yamaha piano manufacturing, and played it here as well. After playing, they showed me an Elton John tattoo on their arm. They shared a photo of the piano at their home, which even to an untrained eye was a very high-level grand piano. They explained it was a C6X, a level beyond the aforementioned C3, and although I did not ask in detail, I gathered they were a professional musician. In high spirits, one of the guests then happily accompanied the other's shopping at Seisuke knife shop, which had opened just four months earlier. Although I, as a guide, have been to Asakusa and Kappabashi many times, this was my first visit to the Ginza store. The way the knives were presented in the store was refined to a level one could call museum-quality. The staff were perfectly bilingual and explained everything until the guests were fully satisfied, and as a result they purchased two high-end knives. They said these were a gift for their child. Finally, they purchased cookies on the first floor of the nearby Shiseido Parlour, and since one of the guests was tired and the other was very satisfied with the shopping, they decided to cancel the originally planned shopping in the department store food hall and return to the hotel. This time, while I had the guests walk slowly, I caught a taxi that was completing its payment on a side street about ten meters away from the pedestrian zone, told the driver to take them to their hotel, and saw the guests off there.
