What's a Full-Day Private Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Asakusa, Shibuya, Meiji Shrine, and Shinjuku
The guests were a group from Oceania. Although the booking was made only two days in advance, I put together a tour that incorporated all of their requests, and when I proposed it, they were both delighted.
At Sensoji Temple, they showed great interest in topics such as the fact that the Kaminarimon Gate was rebuilt through a donation by Konosuke Matsushita, and that Prime Minister Takaichi is a graduate of the Matsushita Institute of Government and Management. After passing through Nakamise Shopping Street, they also showed strong interest in explanations of the Hozomon Gate, which was rebuilt through a donation by Yonetaro Otani and his wife, the founders of Hotel New Otani where the guests were staying, as well as the five-story pagoda. Both of them had a deep respect for Japanese culture, and after clearly understanding the meaning of purifying oneself at the water ablution pavilion, they experienced the sequence of gestures by imitating the guide, and at the main hall they clasped their hands together with solemn expressions.
At Asakusa Shrine, they observed with great interest the grounds where preparations were underway for the Sanja Festival, just five days away, along with the mikoshi portable shrines.
From the connecting walkway leading from Shibuya Station to Shibuya Mark City, they gazed at the Shibuya Scramble Crossing and enthusiastically took videos, and then visited the Hachiko statue. After that, they actually crossed the Scramble Crossing, passed through Center Street, and enjoyed shopping at the Jump Store, Nintendo Store, and Pokemon Center in Shibuya Parco while looking for souvenirs. At the Pokemon Center, they were very disappointed that the Pokemon cards they were looking for were sold out, but they mentioned they intended to visit again during the rest of their stay in Tokyo.
After that, on the way to Meiji Shrine via Cat Street, they showed interest in the Japanese burger shop "Okomedoki" and took a lunch break. Each of them finished a special rice burger with beef and chicken wrapped in nori seaweed, and were satisfied, saying it was "very delicious."
Rather than heading straight to Meiji Shrine, they visited the capybara cafe on Takeshita Street on their own, having shown interest in it, and seemed very pleased, saying, "It was fun to be able to do a video call with family while interacting with the capybaras."
At Meiji Shrine, they bowed politely in front of the grand torii, the second torii, and the third torii, and worshipped with solemn expressions. As luck would have it, they encountered two wedding processions and eagerly took videos. As they were leaving Meiji Shrine, they shared their impression that "the buildings we visited today at Sensoji Temple, Asakusa Shrine, and Meiji Shrine were all very simple, completely different from the ornate splendor of Christian churches, and we were very impressed by that."
After that, we moved to Shinjuku. While enjoying the atmosphere of the pedestrian zone around the Kabukicho area, the powerful Godzilla Head on Godzilla Road, and an idol event near the Tokyu Kabukicho Tower, I took them to their destination, the Joshuya Shinjuku store, and the tour came to an end.
At the time of parting, they shared their impression, saying, "It was so much fun to be guided to various spots while hearing all kinds of stories from you about Japan's history and people's daily lives. Thank you so much."

We had such a special and memorable day—our experience with Tatsu exceeded all expectations. Tatsu’s warmth, knowledge, and friendliness created a truly welcoming and enriching atmosphere from start to finish.
We learned so much about Japanese culture in a way that was both meaningful and accessible, and the entire day felt relaxed yet deeply engaging.
One of the highlights was a visit to Choan-ji Temple, a peaceful spot off the beaten path. There were no tourists—just local families visiting the graves on the grounds for the spring equinox. We even had the chance to meet the head monk. The temple is home to over 200 unique Buddha statues (and growing), each with its own character. It was incredibly special and serene, and something we would never have found on our own.Afterward, we shared stories with others from our business group who also visited Hakone that day—and they were genuinely jealous of the experience we had!
Thank you again for making our time in Japan so personal and unforgettable. We’ll be talking about this day for a long time to come.

We had an amazing day in Hakone thanks to Tatsu, our fantastic guide! From the moment we met, he was friendly, organized, and incredibly knowledgeable about the area’s history, nature, and cultural spots.
Tatsu helped us navigate the Hakone loop effortlessly, including the ropeway, Lake Ashi cruise, and even timed our visit to open air museum perfectly to avoid the crowds.
Tatsu also bought for us some black eggs to extend our lifetimes. It felt like a truly authentic experience.
Highly recommended if you want to make the most of Hakone without any stress. Worth every yen!
