Title: What's a Private Tokyo Day Tour Like for Cruise Ship Passengers? A Licensed Guide's Report

The guests were a group from Europe who arrived in Tokyo that morning by cruise ship. Since they came from a region I once visited frequently, I was especially motivated to do my best (though I always am). To save time, we met at Honganji Temple. The guests were not particularly interested in the fish at Tsukiji, but rather in Honganji Temple, whose appearance differs from the temples they had seen in Kyoto. Since the weather was fine today, we spent time at the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, where I explained the founding of the Edo shogunate and the Meiji Restoration. The azaleas in the Ninomaru Garden were blooming more beautifully by the day. As the guests wished to visit Ueno, we went there, but with the cherry blossoms already fallen and the food stalls cleared away, it had become quiet, so we only had a meal and left promptly. In Asakusa, while taking a break with coffee and taiyaki, I explained the differences between Shinto and Buddhism, the syncretism of the two, the separation edict, and the merits and drawbacks of national character, drawing comparisons between Japan and their home region. Everyone listened attentively, and they took many photos at the Imperial Palace and in Asakusa. Since they would take the 4:10 water bus back to Odaiba, where the TICT is located, I saw them off, and the tour came to an end.

Hello! My name is Hideki Maruyama. I was born in Osaka and raised in the Greater Tokyo area. I obtained my National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter Certificate in February 2016.
I spent 23 years working at a leading Japanese automotive company, including 7 years posted overseas. I then worked for a German premium automotive manufacturer for 13 years, followed by 6 years as an advisor to a British energy company. Through these roles at global corporations, I developed and refined key skills such as:
1. Cross-cultural communication
2. A deep understanding of business elites and affluent customers
3. The ability to deliver impactful and impressive presentations in English
In addition to my regular duties, I often served as an interpreter for top executives during meetings with foreign government officials. I also had opportunities to introduce aspects of Japan—such as our national character and consumer preferences—to leadership teams in both the German and British companies.
As a tour guide, I’ve had the pleasure of guiding guests from a wide range of countries especially after the pandemic, including the US, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Norway, Romania, Slovenia, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, India, Hong Kong, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Argentina, Columbia, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Laos, Turkey, Jordan, Kenya and Israel.
When guiding, I always keep in mind to go beyond what guests can find on social media or ChatGPT. I believe my professional background allows me to offer unique insights, and I am encouraged when guests mention this in their reviews
