What Is a Private Tokyo Walking Tour Like for Senior Guests? A Licensed Guide's Report

The guests were visiting from North America. They had arrived in Japan the previous day, planned to sightsee in Tokyo for a few days, and would then board a cruise ship to travel around various parts of Japan before continuing on to another destination. We discovered that they lived near the North American headquarters of my former company, which helped us quickly warm to each other, and we had a lively conversation as they asked me questions about history and national character as a cultural background. Just before reaching the main hall of Meiji Shrine, one of the guests began to feel unwell, so we proceeded slowly with frequent rest stops. We gave up on the planned visit to Shibuya Scramble Square and headed from Harajuku toward Shimbashi, but the guest felt worse at Takanawa Gateway, so we got off partway, took a break, and I assisted them, including getting advice on medication from a doctor.

Lesson learned: For senior guests who arrive the day before the tour, arrange a relaxed itinerary even if the guests and their agency request otherwise. I often feel that guests and agencies underestimate the walking distances at the Imperial Palace, Meiji Shrine, and Asakusa, so it is important to help them understand that the walking distances at the Imperial Palace versus Buckingham Palace, or at Meiji Shrine versus Notre-Dame Cathedral, are quite different.

Hello! My name is Hideki Maruyama. I was born in Osaka and raised in the Greater Tokyo area. I obtained my National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter Certificate in February 2016.
I spent 23 years working at a leading Japanese automotive company, including 7 years posted overseas. I then worked for a German premium automotive manufacturer for 13 years, followed by 6 years as an advisor to a British energy company. Through these roles at global corporations, I developed and refined key skills such as:
1. Cross-cultural communication
2. A deep understanding of business elites and affluent customers
3. The ability to deliver impactful and impressive presentations in English
In addition to my regular duties, I often served as an interpreter for top executives during meetings with foreign government officials. I also had opportunities to introduce aspects of Japan—such as our national character and consumer preferences—to leadership teams in both the German and British companies.
As a tour guide, I’ve had the pleasure of guiding guests from a wide range of countries especially after the pandemic, including the US, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Norway, Romania, Slovenia, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, India, Hong Kong, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Argentina, Columbia, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Laos, Turkey, Jordan, Kenya and Israel.
When guiding, I always keep in mind to go beyond what guests can find on social media or ChatGPT. I believe my professional background allows me to offer unique insights, and I am encouraged when guests mention this in their reviews
