What Is a Private Ueno, Yanaka, and Asakusa Walking Tour in Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report

The guests were a group visiting from Europe. Everyone spoke English with a slight accent, but there were no issues with communication at all. In particular, one of the guests had a surprising amount of knowledge about Japanese culture, which impressed me. The Hotel where they were staying was a little far from any station, but since the Hibiya Line was convenient for reaching Ueno Park, our first destination, we first headed to Iriya Station. As they had Suica cards, we also used the JR lines for getting around afterward.

At Ueno Park, I guided them through the area including Toshogu Shrine. They seemed genuinely interested in the historic buildings. In Yanaka, they tried a variety of light snacks, so our stay there ran a bit longer than planned. On the other hand, since they had already strolled around the Asakusa area the previous evening, I kept the guiding there brief, taking a longer rest on a bench beside Hozomon Gate while I explained about religion in Japan.

Since the guests had expressed a wish to have lunch around Senso-ji Temple after the tour, we parted ways on-site after visiting the main hall.

Hi. My name is Masafumi Miyazaki. Please call me “Sam”. I am a government-licensed guide.
I was born in Tokyo and was raised in the suburbs of Tokyo called Tama area. When I was in university, I majored in western dramas, so I am good at playing like an actor.
I like reading, listening to the music, and walking. I belong to several walking clubs, and sometimes I guide the members around Tokyo.
One of my strengths as a guide is that I know well about kombu, Japanese kelps. In December every year, I work at a traditional kombu shop in Tsukiji Fish Market. At that shop, I learned a lot of things related to kombu or other ingredients for washoku. I can explain the different characteristics of them to you.
Also, I am familiar with Japanese flowers and plants. If you stroll around a Japanese garden with me, I am sure you will be able to enjoy beautiful flowers and unique plants in every season.
I look forward to meeting you. Thank you.
