What Can You See on a Private Tokyo Tour? A Licensed Guide's Report from Meiji Shrine to Asakusa

At Meiji Shrine, the guests explored the quiet forest in the heart of Tokyo in the morning while learning about an overview of Shinto and the imperial system. The mood then shifted as the group toured the subculture of Omotesando and Takeshita Street, enjoying gashapon machines and shopping. Having learned that the guests were interested in early modern Japanese history through the drama "Shogun," I made a spur-of-the-moment change to part of the plan, postponing Akihabara to another day so we could revisit early modern history at the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace. They became interested in how the lives of samurai and ninja changed during the peaceful era under the feudal domain system. In Asakusa, the guests tried grilled meat, which they found a little unusual but delicious. After the tour, they took a taxi to an origami museum, where we parted ways. We moved at a brisk pace as there were many spots to see, but overall I felt the guests enjoyed the day.

Born and raised in Tokyo a half-century ago, I have lived in Tokyo all my life except for one year in the UK to study for a master’s course. I am a Tokyo Native with viewpoints based on broader local knowledge than anyone else. I have specialised in Japanese history, culture, and architecture since I was an architect.
Also, I am a foodie emphasising Japanese traditional & healthy foods. I’ve been to many countries around the world, such as the US, Central America, Europe, and Asia. As such, I believe I can anticipate the needs of foreign tourists in Japan.
