What's a Rainy-Day Private Tokyo Tour Without Temples or Museums Like? A Licensed Guide's Report

The guests were a group visiting from North America. We exchanged many emails in advance, and they requested to see places other than temples, shrines, gardens, and museums. They also asked about vintage clothing shops and knife stores, so I researched and introduced several places. Unfortunately, it rained on the day of the tour. Since the meeting time was early, we took our time viewing the Nijubashi Bridge of the Imperial Palace, then walked toward the Kikyomon Gate. We entered the East Gardens right when the Otemon Gate opened at 9:00. Even in the rain, the irises were blooming in a variety of colors. The guests watched with curiosity the long-tailed carp swimming in the pond. They said that although they had seen many gardens in Kyoto, they were glad they came. We exited through the Hirakawamon Gate and traveled from Takebashi Station to Tsukiji. At Tsukiji Market, the guests carefully examined the knives they were after and purchased two. I also assisted with the tax-free procedure. At the food court, they seemed satisfied enjoying tekka-don and tempura soba. After the meal, we discussed where to go next. They had made a reservation for Shibuya Sky at 2:00, but they said they gave up on it because of the rain. I recommended Takeshita Street and Daikanyama, but they said they would go there the next day, so not today. Instead, they requested to visit Nezu, so we headed from Tsukiji to Nezu. Even in Nezu, we avoided the shrine and walked along the winding, narrow alleys behind the residential area. Along the way, we stopped at a shop specializing in tenugui hand towels and bought souvenirs. Then we took a break at Aoyama Coffee, known as the heart of the Yanaka-Nezu-Sendagi area. Although it was a small shop, it had a warm atmosphere, and the guests were delighted to interact with the shop owner and local residents. Unfortunately, many shops in Yanaka Ginza were closed on Tuesday. We traveled from Nippori to Kanda by JR and parted ways at Kanda Station. It was quite challenging to plan the course for a Tokyo walk in the rain, especially with the request to avoid shrines, temples, and museums. I tried to respond flexibly, but I wonder how it went. I would be very happy if it turned out to be a memorable day for them.
