Tour Itinerary in Detail
Meeting at guests at the hotel at 10:00, the group explored Tokyo until the tour ended at 14:00. The day ran to 4 hours from start to finish.
The itinerary covered Hamarikyu at 10:20, Caretta Shiodome (SKY VIEW Observation Deck) at 11:30, Shin-Marunouchi Building at 12:10 and East Gardens of the Imperial Palace at 12:40.
Travel between the sites was by public transport: Shimbashi to Tokyo by train (160JPY). Across 1 sections the fare came to 160JPY per person.
What Is a Private Walking Tour of Hamarikyu Gardens and the Imperial Palace in Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report
The guests were a group visiting from Europe. In front of the Otemon Gate of Hamarikyu Gardens, I explained Japanese history, the shogunate, and the changes the garden has undergone over time before we entered. The rapeseed flowers were in full bloom, and the guests were delighted, eagerly taking photos with the high-rise buildings in the background. After I explained the tidal pond and the former duck hunting grounds within the garden, they enjoyed viewing the cherry blossoms. We then went up to the observation deck of the nearby Caretta Shiodome to take in a panoramic view of the surrounding scenery. We traveled by train to Tokyo Station, and after having a meal at the Shin-Marunouchi Building, the guests took in the full view of the Imperial Palace and Tokyo Station. At the Imperial Palace East Gardens, the rain grew heavier, so I guided them through the key highlights, and after viewing the Japanese garden at the end, we concluded the tour at the exit. It was a tour that was difficult to walk through in the rain.

We had a wonderful half-day tour of Tokyo with Shigeru and would thoroughly recommend him.
From our first communication, Shigeru was friendly, approachable and helpful. He listened carefully to our interests and suggested an itinerary that suited us perfectly, including Asakusa, Yanaka and Nezu. Rather than simply showing us the sights, he helped us understand the history, culture and atmosphere of each area, and was able to answer the many questions we had throughout the day.
What we particularly appreciated was that Shigeru was happy to talk not only about the places we visited, but also about everyday life in Japan, which was exactly what we were interested in learning more about. His knowledge added so much to the experience.
We were travelling to Japan partly to research our family history and to learn more about my great-grandfather, who was born in Tokyo. Shigeru took a genuine interest in our search and was very helpful in suggesting places and ideas that might assist our research, which we greatly appreciated.
His English was excellent and communication was easy throughout. He was patient, professional, knowledgeable and very good company.
The tour was one of the highlights of our time in Tokyo and we would not hesitate to recommend Shigeru to anyone looking for a guide who is both informative and personable.
