What Is a Private Tokyo Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Asakusa, Ameyoko, and Ueno

I guided the group who came from Europe on a private tour of Tokyo. They said they had decided to visit Japan because they wanted to come to a safe place with a culture different from their own. They were interested in Japan's food culture, so I showed them around Asakusa and Ameyoko. On Nakamise-dori Street, they enjoyed browsing the souvenir shops and also had fun trying street food along the way. We stopped by Sensoji Temple and Asakusa Shrine, where I explained the ways of worship in Buddhism and Shinto.

For lunch, they wanted a place where they could choose from a variety of foods, so we went to Cattlea in the Matsuzakaya department store in Ueno. This is a place that a guide had recommended in a past tour report. Since my repertoire of dining spots is limited, it is very helpful to be able to refer to other guides' lunch locations.

At the end, they asked me to find an animal cafe with golden retrievers, so I guided them to the front of an animal cafe in Yoyogi Park before we parted ways. Along the way, I also showed them the transparent restrooms from the toilet project in front of the station.

Since they had already used the bus on their own the day before, I explained how to take the bus back at the bus stop. They said they would be traveling to Kyoto and Hiroshima next.

I’m Yoko Kusumoto, a government lisenced English-speaking guide.
I have been living in Tokyo for more than 20 years, and it’s my pleasure to show you around Tokyo. I recommend Meiji Shrine and Asakusa if you are first time in Japan. I also recommend off-the-beaton path spots like Fukagawa Fudodo and Gotokuji Temple(lucky cat temple).
I was born and brought up in Kamakura, where the first shogun’s government was established. It will be my pleasure to introduce you my hometown as well.

I live with my husband and one teenage son.
I like traveling, flowers, sewing, quilting, scrapbooking, and exploring Tokyo.

I’m looking forward to hearing from you soon.
