Tokyo in Half a Day: Meiji Shrine — Guide Komaki
March, 2025
This is a private guided tour report by Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.), a network of 1,000+ government-licensed, English-speaking local guides across all 47 prefectures of Japan. Not affiliated with the Japan Guide Association.
Tour Itinerary
- 10:00 Meet at the hotel
- 10:50-12:20 Meiji Shrine
- 12:40-13:30 Shibuya (Scramble Crossing, break at Starbucks, Hachiko, shopping at Bic Camera)
- 14:00 Hotel

At Meiji Shrine, the guests enjoyed praying and drawing omikuji fortunes, and purchased omamori charms as souvenirs, happily putting them on right away. They were also delighted to come across children in kimono and a Shinto wedding ceremony. With a strong interest in history, they listened attentively to explanations about the differences between Buddhism and Shinto, the Japanese imperial system, family crests, and more. In Shibuya, they walked across the famous crossing and enjoyed the view while taking a tea break at a Starbucks. Along the way, they mentioned they wanted to buy a plug adapter, which they were able to purchase without trouble at a large electronics store in Shibuya. During the train rides, they happily talked about the differences between the trains here and those back in Oceania. The tour ended after seeing them off at the hotel lobby. The guests also kindly covered the guide's transportation costs and tea expenses during the tour.

4 Hour private tour with Komaki
5/5 Stars – An absolutely wonderful day in Tokyo with Komaki!
We had a fantastic 4-hour private tour of Tokyo with Komaki, and she made our entire experience a total pleasure! She is a vibrant, knowledgeable guide who is absolutely full of energy and incredibly easy to get along with.
In just four hours, Komaki helped us see so much of this beautiful city. We visited the serene Meiji Shrine, the historic Asakusa area, and the stunning Sensoji Temple. We also made it out to the famous Shibuya Crossing! Instead of fighting the crowds at Starbucks for a view, Komaki showed us a perfect vantage point right from the comfort of the train station where we watched the organized chaos, spotted the Mario Karts driving past, and saw the famous Hachikō dog statue.
If you want a memorable, stress-free day exploring Tokyo, we highly recommend booking a tour with Komaki! ⛩️🐕🚗🇯🇵

Our Private 6 Hr Tokyo Tour w Komaki
Our experience with Komaki was no less than unforgettable! In the weeks prior to our trip, the exchanges between us were friendly and informative and the agreed upon itinerary aligned perfectly with our expectations a made for a perfect intro to Tokyo and Japan. When we met at 8 AM in our hotel lobby, it seemed as if we were already friends, a sense that grew deeper as the tour evolved. Komaki shared her deep knowledge of culture and history as we navigated our way to Senso-ji Temple and Tokyo Skytree and on to Ueno Park for Sakura and watercoloring. While touring we shared all of our family histories and discovered our mutual connection through architecture. By the end of our too-short time, we discovered much about the culture, saw everything described , learned how to use the trains, get tickets and money and most importantly, felt truly embraced and welcomed to Japan by someone who felt
like an old friend we hope to see again.

Great start to our first day in Tokyo
Komaki pick us up from our accommodation and helped us with getting our Suica cards at the station.
Had a lovely and very informative walk to Shibuya crossing, Meiju Yengu and through a cool street with lots of food and pet shops. Including Capybara, mini pigs, otters, dogs etc.
After she left us we found ourselves much more confident in the shops and trains and I would really recommend to start with her on your first day in Tokyo.

Absolutely fantastic 4-hour city tour with Komaki Kawaguchi!
Komaki was an outstanding guide — knowledgeable, energetic, and genuinely passionate about Tokyo. She took us to all the highlights while sharing fascinating stories and little-known details that made the city come alive. Her explanations were clear, engaging, and perfectly balanced between history, culture, and modern life.
What I loved most was how personalized the tour felt. Komaki adapted perfectly to our pace and interests, answered every question with enthusiasm, and even helped us with some local tips that went way beyond the usual tourist stuff. Her English is excellent and she has a warm, friendly personality that made the whole experience feel like exploring with a local friend.
If you want a private tour that’s professional, fun, and truly memorable, I can’t recommend Komaki highly enough. She’s a National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter for a reason — she’s one of the best!
Thank you, Komaki! We had an amazing time and left with a much deeper appreciation for Tokyo.
Highly recommended! 🙌”
