What's a 4-Hour Private Tour of Meiji Shrine and Shibuya Like? A Tokyo Guide's Report

The guests were visiting Japan for the first time from North America. Their roughly two-week trip through Tokyo, Hakone, and Kyoto was coming to an end the next day. Continuous rain had made sightseeing difficult, and during the first half of their trip in Tokyo, they had not visited Asakusa or Meiji Shrine. They had only glimpsed the Imperial Palace from the car window. Since they wished to spend their final day in Japan at a relaxed pace, I guided them mainly around Meiji Shrine and Shibuya.

At Meiji Shrine, I explained the meaning of the vermilion color as protection against evil and the Shinto view of nature reflected in torii gates that make use of the natural wood grain, comparing them with the vermilion torii gates of Fushimi Inari Taisha that they had visited in Kyoto. One of the guests enthusiastically photographed the torii gates and the main gate. They also purchased a good-luck charm for academic success for a member of the family studying chemistry at university. When I mentioned that a Japanese chemist had been announced as a Nobel Prize winner the day before, one of the guests joked, "That person must have had an academic success charm too," and we laughed together. After the visit, while stopping by the souvenir shop, they mentioned wanting to buy green tea. At first I planned to look for a specialty tea shop in Harajuku or Shibuya, but we found matcha, sencha, and teapots at the shop within the shrine grounds, so they purchased them on the spot. Later, while resting at a cafe, the conversation turned to the fact that they had not yet bought a souvenir for a family member, so I decided to guide them to Tokyu Food Show in Shibuya.

Before heading to Shibuya, as we strolled around Harajuku, I had heard that they had enjoyed the Nezu Museum they had already visited, so rather than Takeshita Street, we walked along the more relaxed Omotesando. After showing interest in Harakado, they spotted Onitsuka Tiger. In Kyoto they had given up entering due to a long line, but this time they were able to enter without waiting, and one of the guests purchased shoes.

In Shibuya, we enjoyed taking photos of the scramble crossing, the Hachiko statue, and the large electronic billboards glowing at dusk. At Tokyu Food Show, they bought cookies with cheese filling for a family member, and for the family member studying chemistry, cookies in Shibuya-exclusive packaging different from typical airport souvenirs.

In time for their dinner reservation, we returned to the Hotel at exactly 6:00 p.m. At the start of the tour they seemed a little tired, but they gradually began to talk more, and shopping for souvenirs seemed to please them even further. At our farewell, they warmly said, "Nice to see you!", and we concluded the four-hour tour in a pleasant atmosphere.
