What's a Full-Day Private Tour of Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Asakusa, the Imperial Palace, and Meiji Shrine

The guests were visitors from Europe. One of them had been to Japan several times before for work but was sightseeing for the first time, while the other was visiting Japan for the first time. Part of this trip was also for work. Since the agency that had been involved stepped aside early, we were able to communicate directly, which led to the itinerary above. They had arrived the previous day after a 26-hour journey, so I paid attention to their energy levels and hydration, but they walked energetically throughout. As the weather was extremely sunny, we made sure to walk in the shade at places like Asakusa and the Imperial Palace. At Nakamise shopping street, they purchased a happi coat to wear at their mountain cottage. At Meiji Shrine, they fully enjoyed the sacred camphor trees, a wedding ceremony, and an ikebana (flower arrangement) exhibition. They seemed very satisfied to have seen the many different faces of Tokyo today. As a little extra, I also helped look for a necktie in the underground shops at Shimbashi Station, since one for work had been forgotten. Rather than rushing through four places in six hours, I believe it is more beneficial for both sides to spend eight hours leisurely visiting five places, even if it costs the guests a little more.

A notable stop on the tour was Meiji Shrine. Meiji Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in a tranquil forest in the heart of Tokyo, dedicated to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. Surrounded by approximately 100,000 trees donated from across Japan, the shrine offers a peaceful retreat from the bustling city. Visitors often encounter traditional Shinto wedding ceremonies, and the serene grounds make it one of Tokyo's most popular spots for experiencing Japanese spiritual culture.

Hello! My name is Hideki Maruyama. I was born in Osaka and raised in the Greater Tokyo area. I obtained my National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter Certificate in February 2016.
I spent 23 years working at a leading Japanese automotive company, including 7 years posted overseas. I then worked for a German premium automotive manufacturer for 13 years, followed by 6 years as an advisor to a British energy company. Through these roles at global corporations, I developed and refined key skills such as:
1. Cross-cultural communication
2. A deep understanding of business elites and affluent customers
3. The ability to deliver impactful and impressive presentations in English
In addition to my regular duties, I often served as an interpreter for top executives during meetings with foreign government officials. I also had opportunities to introduce aspects of Japan—such as our national character and consumer preferences—to leadership teams in both the German and British companies.
As a tour guide, I’ve had the pleasure of guiding guests from a wide range of countries especially after the pandemic, including the US, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Romania, Slovenia, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, India, Hong Kong, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Argentina, Columbia, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Laos, Turkey, Jordan, Kenya and Israel.
When guiding, I always keep in mind to go beyond what guests can find on social media or ChatGPT. I believe my professional background allows me to offer unique insights, and I am encouraged when guests mention this in their reviews
