What Is a Private Half-Day Walking Tour of Takayama Like? A Licensed Guide's Report
The guests were visiting Japan for the second time, traveling from Asia. On their previous trip they had visited Sapporo, Tokyo, and Osaka, and this time they were on a 21-day rental car drive, arriving at Chubu Airport and departing from Fukuoka Airport, with Takayama as one stop along the way (other destinations included Nagoya, Kanazawa, Kyoto, Okayama, Hiroshima, and Fukuoka). Since the guests enjoyed shopping, we also visited a general goods store, a mounting/framing shop, and a matcha tea shop. In the afternoon they had arranged a separate guide for a sake brewery tour, so I escorted them to the meeting point at Nakabashi. It seemed they had arranged guides at nearly all of the destinations above, and I was impressed by their energy. The guests showed a strong interest in the Takayama Festival and its festival floats, saying they hoped to come and see it someday.

Since I completely retired from my position at a railway company and started being involved in the tour guide interpreter business, I have experienced almost all types of guiding through FIT, Long Group Tours, Cruises (Shore Excursions), Incentive Tours, Special Interest Tours (Railway Travel, Pilgrimages), Familiarization Tours (Sales Promotion Tours) etc.
However, I noticed that I am not fully satisfied to only be a general guide who just manages a tour itinerary provided by tour agents/clients.
High-end guests have sometimes requested me to answer some enquiries that are actually challenging to answer for Japanese nationals. However, I appreciated those because they provided such a challenge and I felt that they wanted to understand my sense of beauty/values as a guide concerning a new culture for them.
Every time I host my guest I do my best to prepare the most appropriate information based on three travel elements (appetite, logistics, accommodation). Nevertheless, I decided to aim for higher guiding skills after I was motivated by senior guides whose guiding strategies and gestures were particularly impressive.

We had a fantastic day touring the highlights of Kyoto with our guide YOSHI and his driver. Yoshi was excellent at helping put together a plan prior to our arrival and everything worked to perfection. Our family of seven enjoyed a relaxed informative day of seeing and better understanding the amazing sights of Kyoto.

Our tour guide, Yoshi-san, a sweet and gentle elderly gentleman, was incredibly kind, patient, and deeply knowledgeable about the town. He brought us to a wonderful local ramen shop that we would never have found on our own, and shared the history of Takayama with such warmth and pride that it truly came alive for us. Through his stories and guidance, we were completely charmed by Takayama’s rich history and culture. Thank you so much Yoshi-san for making our trip so memorable!
