What Is a Private Okinawa Cruise Port Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report from Naha

At the guests' request, we skipped the final stop at Kokusai Street and shopping in Naha, and almost everything else proceeded smoothly and on schedule. Since the guests were not using a messaging app for calls, we communicated only by email. I had emailed them that I would be wearing a blue cap and an orange vest so they could find me easily, but because the arrival terminal was crowded, we were only able to meet around 8:40. The guests had forgotten about my email, my blue cap, and my orange vest. The arrival terminal was extremely crowded because tour buses were guiding cruise ship passengers. While waiting, it was interesting to have brief exchanges with fellow guides. I also enjoyed talking with the local taxi drivers waiting there. When I spoke with a driver holding a card with an unusually spelled name, even the driver did not know which country the client was from. Their destination was interesting — a walk around the fishing port near Moon Beach, where I had been fishing the day before, and their next stops sounded intriguing too. That client appeared to be from Asia. It may actually have been the name of a tour company. Because it was an oddly long name, we had imagined on our own that the client might be from the Middle East. Just at this port terminal, there are so many interesting stories that one could write a novel.

My tour returned to the port on time, and I also received a tip. I believe the guests thoroughly enjoyed their trip to Okinawa. They seemed to be having a great time, and I was satisfied as well.

Hello, I’m Hidemitsu Maeshiro, your tour guide on Okinawa. Please call me Hyde. I was born in 1947 three years after the war and brought up in Shuri. I live near Shurijo Castle and my family run a small nursery school for more than 50 years. I was adapted to Maeshiro when I was about 7 years of age, my family and given name has been changed for three times. I would like to tell you the secret when you come to see me in Okinawa. My older brother who was also adopted to Maeshiro when he was young. His brother and father was killed in battle of Okinawa near the Naha Port. He has to go back to his old family to continue his family’s name Matsuyama.

Well, one out of every four people was killed in this war. Especially Shuri area was heavily damaged and completely destroyed because 32nd Imperial Army dug banker under the site of Shurijo Castle. Ancient capital of Ryukyu has disappeared.

In 1912, Japanese Government decided to rebuild of Shurijo Castle again. It was completed in the year 2019, but unfortunately Shurijo Castle was burnt down 31st of October 2019. The cause of the fire is unknow, many valuable cultural assets has gone. The castle will be rebuild
three yeas later.

After I was retired from local company in 2017, I applied on base tour guide. Guiding Okinawa is very exciting job, we have long history of Okinawa. The first trade with China is in 1372, twenty years later we have 36 family emigrant from China. Thy have been great help to trade with China for next 450 years.
