Tour Itinerary in Detail
This private tour of Tochigi began at 8:30, when the guide met the guests at @ Tobu Nikko Station, and finished at 15:40. The day ran to 7 hours and 10 minutes from start to finish. It included lunch @ Maruhide Diner at 12:00.

What Is a Private Nikko Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report
The guests were visitors from North America. They were very cheerful and enjoyable to be with, and we were able to spend the whole day chatting about many different topics.
They took a deep interest in shoguns and emperors, Shinto and Buddhism, and the flow of Japanese history, and one good question followed another. Normally, worrying that talking too long might bore guests, I watch their reactions and skip parts, but today's guests were wonderful listeners, so I was able to speak freely about the historical background of Nikko.
Since some of the guests preferred a vegetarian option, we went to a local eatery that accommodates various requests flexibly. As they had not eaten breakfast, they ordered three portions between them and enjoyed the meal thoroughly.
They were staying at accommodation near the Nikko Botanical Garden, so I explained how to walk there and we parted in front of the Tamozawa Imperial Villa. Since dinner might not have been included in their stay, I also told them about the bus stop for taking the bus into town. It turned out dinner was indeed not included, and in the evening I received a message saying they were having dinner near the place where we had lunch that day.
They were very active, full of curiosity, and truly wonderful guests.

Great Guide Yumi Highlights Nikko on walking tour
Our 16,000 step tour of Nikko with our guide Yumi was informative, interesting and delightful. Yumi met us at the hotel on time despite a last minute change of venue. She adjusted the itinerary to accommodate the change and we visited the Emperor’s former summer residence (Tamozawa Imperial Villa) and gardens and then walked the Abyss, both good. A quick lunch at the nearby bakery turned into a history lesson about the origins of tourism in Nikko and the oldest hotel in the area. Interesting and unexpected.
We then walked to the world heritage Shrine and temple complex of Toshogu, Futarasan-Jinja and Rinno-Ji. Yumi’s pre-planning and pre-purchase of tickets saved us a 30min wait in line. And her folder of laminated fact sheets provided more details on things we were seeing. So we’ll organised.
We finished the tour with a walk down to the river to view a bridge and then a long uphill walk back to the hotel, via a Lawson Station to stock up on snacks after a busy tour.

Our guide, Yumi Aoyama, was warm, welcoming and highly knowledgeable. She answered every question even thought I’m a bit of a history buff. Her preparation for the tour with a folder of pictures and diagrams to illustrate a point was excellent and helped us understand things like what the five levels of pagodas represent. Overall, we felt like we were in good hands and she delivered good value for money. We highly recommend her and her tour.
