What Is a Private Day Trip to Nikko From Tokyo Like? A Licensed Guide's Report
[Japan Guide Agency (JGA Inc.)](https://www.j-g-a.org/) guide led a private day trip to Nikko for a group of three visiting from Europe. The group was originally expected to be larger, but one member was not feeling well and chose to rest at their hotel in Tokyo, so three of the guests joined the tour.
The guests had believed that their train was already reserved, but it turned out just before the tour that the agency had not made the booking. They arranged it themselves and therefore arrived later than planned, so I adjusted the usual route, order, and destinations accordingly.
Regarding dietary needs, one of the guests had a peanut allergy, and another could not have the food additives sulfite and sulfur dioxide. Since I had been informed in advance, I asked a yuba (tofu skin) restaurant, which tends to serve some of the gentlest dishes, to check all of their ingredients and seasonings to confirm that none of these were included. With the cooperation of the head chef, we were able to confirm that none of them were used, so I could take the guests to lunch with peace of mind. The guests were very pleased, and they enjoyed talking about Japanese ingredients, how to use chopsticks, and dining etiquette. They finished every dish.
The guests had studied a great deal in advance about Buddhism, Shinto, and Japanese culture, and it was clear they had been looking forward to Nikko. Because they had prepared so well, their questions covered a wide range of topics, and we spent more time at each site, so I adjusted the itinerary again. They seemed to understand and enjoy everything, which was wonderful.
It was a very hot day, but they said it was cooler than Tokyo. Even so, since it was still hot, they were happy with the cooling packs I had prepared.
The guests were a very cheerful and fun group, and it turned into a tour full of laughter all day long.

Great Guide Yumi Highlights Nikko on walking tour
Our 16,000 step tour of Nikko with our guide Yumi was informative, interesting and delightful. Yumi met us at the hotel on time despite a last minute change of venue. She adjusted the itinerary to accommodate the change and we visited the Emperor’s former summer residence (Tamozawa Imperial Villa) and gardens and then walked the Abyss, both good. A quick lunch at the nearby bakery turned into a history lesson about the origins of tourism in Nikko and the oldest hotel in the area. Interesting and unexpected.
We then walked to the world heritage Shrine and temple complex of Toshogu, Futarasan-Jinja and Rinno-Ji. Yumi’s pre-planning and pre-purchase of tickets saved us a 30min wait in line. And her folder of laminated fact sheets provided more details on things we were seeing. So we’ll organised.
We finished the tour with a walk down to the river to view a bridge and then a long uphill walk back to the hotel, via a Lawson Station to stock up on snacks after a busy tour.
Recommended.

Our guide, Yumi Aoyama, was warm, welcoming and highly knowledgeable. She answered every question even thought I’m a bit of a history buff. Her preparation for the tour with a folder of pictures and diagrams to illustrate a point was excellent and helped us understand things like what the five levels of pagodas represent. Overall, we felt like we were in good hands and she delivered good value for money. We highly recommend her and her tour.
