Title: What Is a Private History-Focused Tour in Japan Like with a Licensed Guide? A Guide's Report

The guests were visitors from Africa. Based on their name, as I had anticipated, they were descendants of people who had lived in the region for generations, likely since around the 16th or 17th century, before the area became a British colony, and their mother tongue was a language that had branched off from another European language.

One of the guests spoke at length and eloquently about history — how, in 1900, Britain invaded the region and was repelled, but two years later invaded again and conquered the area, which marked the beginning of a colonial period infamous for racial discrimination, and so on. I had read a fair amount about this history myself and found it fascinating at the time, but somehow I had forgotten much of it, so it was wonderful to relearn it directly from a guest who was, in a sense, a living witness to history. The guest also offered to recommend, after returning home, a clear and substantial book on the history of the region.

During the Edo period, the Dutch were the only Westerners permitted to enter and leave Japan, and around the same period, it seems that in the guests' home region, Dutch settlers lived on relatively friendly terms with the indigenous African population.

One of the guests spoke very quickly, which made it a little difficult to follow, but they were a very pleasant person overall.

Hello! Thank you for choosing Nara! I bet you’ll love Nara. I specialize in Nara because Nara is the unique place where in one day you can cover the history and religions of Japan from the ancient times to the post war era while enjoying rambling in the UNESCO World Heritage park, having communication with lovely deer, surrounded with the beautiful nature.
I grew up in Nara, went university in Kyoto, enjoyed teaching at high schools and a university in Osaka. The three former capitals of Japan are home to me.
After retiring from teaching I began guiding so that I can meet various people from various corners of the world with a variety of cultures and backgrounds. Each time I guide, I find it hugely rewarding because I learn a lot from my guests sharing the history, culture and all that I know about Nara, Kyoto and Osaka.
I used to be a marathon runner, mountain climber and skier though I am not much of them anymore.
What I especially recommend is to stay in Nara a couple of days and enjoy communicating with friendly deer while visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Nara in early morning, temples and shrines at night are well worth experiencing.
