What Is a Private Rainy-Day Tour of Nagasaki Like? A Licensed Guide's Report

The guests enjoyed the tour. Since there was quite heavy rain on the day, I adjusted the itinerary accordingly. Originally we had planned to visit Mount Inasa in the afternoon, but because of the rain and the poor visibility it caused, I decided to go to a different destination instead. I also changed our destinations as needed throughout the day, watching how the rain developed at each point. Whenever I made a change, I explained it to the guests and obtained their agreement.

At the Atomic Bomb Museum, they observed the exhibits about the damage very attentively. The group was traveling with young children, and appropriate conduct within the museum was carefully guided. At the Hypocenter Park, they were interested in how the hypocenter had been identified, and at the Peace Park they showed interest in the meaning of the pose of the Peace Statue. After lunch, we cancelled the visit to Mount Inasa and I guided them to Meganebashi Bridge. They were interested to learn that Meganebashi Bridge and the group of stone bridges around it were built in the early 17th century by a Chinese monk. They were also very impressed when I explained the method the city of Nagasaki adopted when these stone bridges were restored after being destroyed in the great flood of 1982. (For disaster prevention, it would be preferable to widen the river, but widening it would make it impossible to rebuild the stone bridges in their original positions, so an underground culvert was constructed along the river so that floodwaters flow into it during high water.) The river had risen due to the rain the previous day, but that water did not flow to the area of Meganebashi Bridge, so the water surface remained calm, and they were very impressed to see the reflection of the bridge on the water. At the end of the itinerary, I guided them to the Hamanomachi shopping arcade, and they were surprised when I explained that the origin of this shopping street dates back to the late 16th century, when Nagasaki was designated as a place for overseas trade.
