What Does a Private One-Day Kyoto Tour of Otagi Nenbutsu-ji, Arashiyama, Kinkaku-ji, and Fushimi Inari Look Like? A Licensed Guide's Report

The guests were a group visiting Japan for the first time from North America. They were all bright and cheerful. To match the bus schedule for Otagi Nenbutsu-ji, I moved up the meeting time at Kyoto Station by 15 minutes. As usual, the bus was full of foreign visitors, and most of them got off at the Otagi-dera-mae stop. In front of the many Buddhist statues, they happily took photos. From April, the admission fee for Otagi Nenbutsu-ji will be raised to 1,000 yen, with free entry for those aged 10 and under. Even so, I thought foreign visitors would still come. After that, we walked to the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. Everyone was a strong walker and had no trouble at all, and they even did some shopping along the way. By the time we reached the lunch spot after the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, we were about 20 minutes behind schedule. After that, the travel from Kinkaku-ji to Fushimi Inari took a little more time than expected, and we ended up going past the planned finishing time of 15:15.
