What Is a Private One-Day Kyoto Bus Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Kiyomizu-dera, Yasaka Shrine, Nijo Castle, and Sanjusangendo
The guests this time were a group visiting Japan for sightseeing from Oceania. Prior communication regarding the adjustment of destinations was carried out with one of the guests. About two months after my first contact in mid-July, I finally received a reply from the guests, listing four desired locations (Kiyomizu-dera, Yasaka Shrine, Nijo Castle, and Sanjusangendo). For the actual itinerary, I proposed a route starting from a hotel near Kyoto Station and traveling the entire course by bus (Hotel ⇒ Sanjusangendo ⇒ Kiyomizu-dera ⇒ Yasaka Shrine ⇒ lunch and break ⇒ Nijo Castle ⇒ Kyoto Station), and the guests agreed.
On the day of the tour, the rainy weather that had continued for some time turned around completely, and we were blessed with beautiful clear autumn skies. Although the sunshine was a little strong, the shade was almost cool, making it perfect weather for the tour. As planned, I met the guests at the hotel, and after a brief self-introduction and confirmation of the itinerary, we set off on the tour right away. All of the guests were visiting Japan for the first time, and while they had a strong interest in Japanese culture and history, they did not yet seem to have very detailed knowledge. The destinations included two Buddhist temples, a shrine, and a palace of the Tokugawa shogunate. As background knowledge, I added specific explanations at each destination while focusing on points such as (1) Shinto and Buddhism and the differences between them, and (2) the imperial system and the rule of the shogun during the age of the samurai. At every destination, the guests listened intently to explanations of Japanese culture and history that they were hearing for the first time, and they also asked many questions.
Blessed with wonderful weather, I was able to conduct an enjoyable tour with the group.

Let me introdece myself. I was born on April 17th in 1952 in Miyazaki prefecture in Kyushu island. I used to be an English teacher of Osaka Prefectural high school. When I retired from a teacher ten years ago, I decided to get a professional guide license. I wanted to play a role of the bridge between Japanese people and the people from all over the world as a second life of mine. After two years efforts, I finally got the guide license. We did our private tour with Kamon-San, and he was a great guide to show off the sites and features of Nara! He got their early, and had a detailed and interesting schedule planned for us, including several of the local shrines and temples, allowing us to also enjoy the deer throughout our tour.
He also took us to a nice local restaurant where we were able to enjoy some of the best soba and catsu curry we had all trip! Kamon-san’s insights and trivia were definitely one of the top highlights from our entire trip to Japan! We would strongly recommend not just Nara but this guided tour to anyone who wants to appreciate more than just the deer!
