The guest was a visitor from North America on their first trip to Japan, having arrived in Tokyo the day before and come straight to Kyoto. They mentioned having studied Japanese for three years during their school days and said they could read hiragana and katakana. As they follow a vegetarian diet, they asked me right after we met to recommend some good restaurants, and I suggested several.
Because it was early morning, Fushimi Inari Taisha had few tourists and was quiet, so we were able to try the Omokaru-ishi (heavy-light stone) without waiting in line. After walking around, the guest wanted to buy an omikuji fortune and a charm, but did not have any cash on hand, so I lent them 5,000 yen in cash on the understanding that they would withdraw cash by credit card later and repay me.
At Sanjusangendo, the guest seemed to feel a great affinity upon seeing that many of the Twenty-Eight Attendants share common ground with the deities of Hinduism. They purchased a goshuin stamp book and lined up to receive a goshuin, and since they observed everything from end to end very carefully, the visit took nearly an hour.
While walking around Gion, the guest tried to withdraw cash from their credit card at a convenience store but was unsuccessful, so in the end the 5,000 yen I had lent was to be handled by having it transferred to my bank account. They said the transfer would take two or three days, but I am a little worried about whether it will actually be made.
After walking around Nijo Castle, it was just about time to finish, so I tried to conclude the tour, but the guest then made various requests, such as wanting to be taken to a shop with vegetarian ramen and asking where they could buy a replacement for their broken suitcase. In the end, I saw them to a ramen shop near Shijo Kawaramachi and we parted ways there.

Kyoto morning tour with Kaz
Kaz (Kazuhiro) guided my family in historic Kyoto. He was flexible when we decided to modify our itinerary on the morning due to rain forecast the next day. Kaz’s English was great which meant he kept my teenage sons engaged with stories about shoguns and samurai battles. We visited the Fushimi Inari Shrine, and the Golden and Silver pavilions. The highlight of the tour with Kaz was being shown around beautiful gardens to see cherry blossoms still blooming and views of the city. We highly recommend going on a tour with him.

Yoshida was excellent, he had a great knowledge of of the historical aspects of the sites we visit, provided us great guidance on appropriate behavior at each site. He was energetic throughout the tour. More important he was more of a companion which made the experience even more enjoyable.

Excellent Tour of Kyoto with Kaz

Kaz was an excellent tour guide! He spent 6 hours showing us around Kyoto including Fushimi Inari Shrine, Nijo Castle, Kinkaku-Ji Temple and the bamboo forest. He was very knowledgeable, spoke English well (lived in the US for 3 years), and took lots of photos for us. We are so glad we booked this tour.
