What's a Private Kyoto Day Tour Like on a Rainy Day? A Licensed Guide's Report

Today's guests were visitors from Europe. They had already visited Hiroshima, Himeji, and Kinosaki. They came because they had heard from someone who had been to Japan before and spoke highly of it. It was rainy all day, but the guests were very positive, and I think they thoroughly enjoyed every place we visited. Thanks to the rain, there were actually fewer people, so we were able to take our time and enjoy the sights. It was nice that it was not crowded when we walked from Yasaka Pagoda through Sannenzaka to Kiyomizu-dera Temple. The Kyoto Imperial Palace was also uncrowded, so we could enjoy it at a relaxed pace. Kinkaku-ji did not have its usual crowds either, and the guests gazed slowly at the beautiful Golden Pavilion. I believe they were very pleased.

A notable stop on the tour was Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. Kinkaku-ji is a Zen Buddhist temple in northern Kyoto whose top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf. Originally built as a retirement villa for a shogun in the late 14th century, it was later converted into a temple according to his wishes. The pavilion is set beside a reflective pond and surrounded by a carefully designed strolling garden, making it one of the most iconic and photographed sites in all of Japan.
