What Is a Private Kyoto Day Tour Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Arashiyama, Kinkaku-ji, and Ryoan-ji

The guests came to Japan from Oceania. They had visited Japan once before, quite some time ago. Although they walked slowly, they had no trouble with stairs or slopes. It rained from the morning, which made me a little anxious, but the rain stopped in Arashiyama, and at times the sun even came out. It began to rain again around Kinkaku-ji and continued at Ryoan-ji. Fortunately, the weather did not significantly affect the tour. Along the way, we encountered a group of school children on a school trip, and the guests were a little surprised, asking whether no teachers were accompanying them. After finishing at Ryoan-ji, I saw the guests off to their accommodation by bus, ending the tour. The photo was taken at the bamboo grove area of Arashiyama, near the entrance of Tenryu-ji Temple.

A notable stop on the tour was Ryoan-ji Temple in Kyoto. Ryoan-ji is a Zen temple famous for its rock garden, considered one of the finest surviving examples of the karesansui, or dry landscape, style of Japanese gardening. The garden consists of fifteen stones arranged on a bed of raked white gravel, and it is said that from any single viewpoint, at least one of the stones is always hidden from view. The temple was originally founded in the late 15th century and is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.

Yes. This report describes one private tour as it actually ran. Every Kyoto itinerary is built around the guests, so the places, the pace and the starting point can all be changed before the tour.

I was born and grew up in Kyoto and now live near Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto. I used to be a schoolteacher of English and welcome a lot of students from foreign countries. I really enjoyed showing them around Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Himeji, and Hiroshima. I have been a professional tour guide for about 8 years. I always try to let my guests learn Japanese traditional and modern culture. Since I was born in Kyoto, I know a lot about its culture and people. I myself enjoyed several sports, such as soccer, judo, and marathon when I was young. I’m much interested in baseball and sumo. My motto as a tour guide is to let my guests learn about our tradition and culture precisely and really enjoy themselves. I strongly hope you will enjoy the tour in Japan with me.
