What Is a Private Day Tour of Kyoto Like? A Licensed Guide's Report on Nanzen-ji, Nijo Castle, and Heian Shrine

I guided a group from North America. The guest noticed the fountain in front of Nanzen-ji Temple and correctly pointed out, "This is used for generating power." Nanzen-ji was relatively uncrowded, so they were able to take their time viewing it. At the Suirokaku aqueduct, continuing from the earlier topic of the fountain, I talked about hydroelectric power, and in front of the dry landscape garden of the Hojo, they sat quietly for a while and enjoyed the Zen atmosphere. Since one of the guests had an interest in the tea ceremony, we enjoyed talking about it while looking at the tea room deep within Nanzen-ji.

At the next stop, Nijo Castle, they were particularly fond of the ceiling decorations and the designs of the nail covers, viewing them with great interest. As there was a dietary consideration, I had arranged a suitable restaurant in advance so they could enjoy their meal with peace of mind. In the afternoon, Fushimi Inari Taisha had been planned, but to avoid crowds I changed it to Heian Shrine, where they strolled leisurely through the garden. A couple who had just finished a wedding happened to be taking photos, and the guests joked, "Did you arrange this?", creating a warm and friendly atmosphere. Even in the taxi to Kyoto Station, they praised the tour, saying, "It was a very good tour," and we ended with a hug.

A notable stop on the tour was Heian Shrine. Heian Shrine was built in 1895 to commemorate the 1,100th anniversary of the founding of the capital in Kyoto. It is known for its large vermilion torii gate and its spacious garden, called Shin'en, which surrounds the main buildings and is especially famous for its seasonal flowers, including weeping cherry blossoms in spring and irises in early summer. The garden offers a peaceful place for a leisurely stroll throughout the year.

Hello! My name is Umi. I was born and raised in Kyoto, and I still live here today.

I have always loved traveling. When I visit another country, I enjoy learning about its history, culture, and way of life from local people. Talking with locals helps me understand a place much better than simply visiting famous sights. That’s why I became a tour guide.

Through my tours, I hope to help visitors gain a deeper understanding of Japan. In addition to its beauty and traditions, I am also happy to talk about modern life in Japan. My goal is for my guests to leave Japan with wonderful memories and a deeper appreciation of the country.

I’m looking forward to meeting you!
