Tour Itinerary
- 930 Hotel → Arashiyama Sightseeing (Bamboo Grove Path・Tenryu-ji Temple) → Kinkaku-ji Temple → Kodai-ji Temple → Gion (Lunchtime) → 1430 Hotel
Can You Do a Private One-Day Kyoto Tour Visiting Arashiyama, Kinkaku-ji, and Kodai-ji? A Licensed Guide's Report
This was a private one-day Kyoto sightseeing tour for a group who had attended an international conference. During the planning meeting, the guests requested world-heritage-class temples and shrines with beautiful gardens set in wonderful natural surroundings, so we visited Sagano (the Bamboo Grove path and Tenryu-ji), Kinkaku-ji, and Kodai-ji. Although it was a hot day, it was very memorable to see the guests taking photos with satisfaction at every spot. The guests took a strong interest in the episodes and stories connected to each place (for example, Yoshimitsu's construction of the Golden Pavilion and Nene's intentions behind building Kodai-ji). Before returning to the hotel, we visited a ramen restaurant in Gion recommended by the driver, which was well received, and I felt it truly reflected the local knowledge of the driver.

Since I completely retired from my position at a railway company and started being involved in the tour guide interpreter business, I have experienced almost all types of guiding through FIT, Long Group Tours, Cruises (Shore Excursions), Incentive Tours, Special Interest Tours (Railway Travel, Pilgrimages), Familiarization Tours (Sales Promotion Tours) etc.
However, I noticed that I am not fully satisfied to only be a general guide who just manages a tour itinerary provided by tour agents/clients.
High-end guests have sometimes requested me to answer some enquiries that are actually challenging to answer for Japanese nationals. However, I appreciated those because they provided such a challenge and I felt that they wanted to understand my sense of beauty/values as a guide concerning a new culture for them.
Every time I host my guest I do my best to prepare the most appropriate information based on three travel elements (appetite, logistics, accommodation). Nevertheless, I decided to aim for higher guiding skills after I was motivated by senior guides whose guiding strategies and gestures were particularly impressive.

We had a fantastic day touring the highlights of Kyoto with our guide YOSHI and his driver. Yoshi was excellent at helping put together a plan prior to our arrival and everything worked to perfection. Our family of seven enjoyed a relaxed informative day of seeing and better understanding the amazing sights of Kyoto.

Our tour guide, Yoshi-san, a sweet and gentle elderly gentleman, was incredibly kind, patient, and deeply knowledgeable about the town. He brought us to a wonderful local ramen shop that we would never have found on our own, and shared the history of Takayama with such warmth and pride that it truly came alive for us. Through his stories and guidance, we were completely charmed by Takayama’s rich history and culture. Thank you so much Yoshi-san for making our trip so memorable!
