What Does a One-Day Private Kyoto Tour Look Like? A Licensed Guide's Report
The guests were a group from North America who had arrived in Kyoto yesterday after passing through Tokyo, Matsumoto, Takayama, and Kanazawa. Since a day trip to Nara was planned for tomorrow, effectively today was the only full day in Kyoto, so the itinerary combined the standard highlights with a monkey park and Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple as a special request from the group. I had been a little concerned that the day might feel long or that there could be some restlessness, but the group was well-behaved, and we finished the tour within the scheduled time without any issues, including lunch. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, which was a relief.

Great walking tour in Kyoto!
Shoji was a great guide around Kyoto. Even in the rain we were able to visit the shrines/temples we wanted to see. We wished we had started earlier as we would have linke to have seen other things off the beaten path. We ended in Gion and were able to walk around the area. Shoji brought a wealth of knowledge about the area and Japanese culture.

In just six hours, he managed to give us an incredibly rich and insightful experience. He didn’t just show us the historic, architectural, and cultural highlights of Kyoto — he also explained the complexities of modern Japan, including how the unique structure of Japanese society helped the country avoid colonization and achieve remarkable success despite limited natural resources. We had such a wonderful tour of Nara with our tour guide Shoji. He was very knowledgeable and taught us so much about Japanese history. He was extremely flexible and helped us create the best tour for us. We wouldn’t have had near the positive experience or seen as many locations if we had tried to do the tour on our own. I recommend this tour and guide to anyone wanting to experience Nara.
