What Does a Private Kyoto Day Tour Cover? A Licensed Guide's Report on Kiyomizu-dera, Kinkaku-ji, and Arashiyama

The guests were visitors from North America. I took the group to Kiyomizu-dera, Kinkaku-ji, and Arashiyama. Today the weather was perfect for sightseeing.

The group showed a strong interest in Japanese architecture, and paid particular attention to the kake-zukuri (overhanging stage construction) at Kiyomizu-dera and the three different architectural styles found at Kinkaku-ji (shinden-zukuri, buke-zukuri, and the Zen style).

The favorite spot for one of the guests was Kiyomizu-dera, where the view was said to be wonderful.

Even at 10:30, Kiyomizu-dera was already crowded with tourists, and it seemed that by the afternoon Gojo-zaka would become nearly impassable. Arashiyama, on the other hand, was surprisingly uncrowded.

Along with explanations of the sightseeing spots, I also introduced aspects of Japanese culture such as Zen, the tea ceremony, the culture of wood, and the culture of rice. The guests appeared to fully enjoy their sightseeing in Kyoto.
