The guests were a group of friends from Europe on their first trip to Japan, who arrived in Kyoto today by Shinkansen from Osaka. As requested, I guided them to Nijo Castle, Kinkaku-ji, and Gion. At Nijo Castle, they were captivated by the Karamon Gate, the sliding-door paintings in the palace, and the transom carvings, and I spoke about the transitions in modern Japanese history, including the scene of the return of political power to the Emperor that took place in the Grand Hall. In the Ninomaru Garden, they were moved by the fresh greenery and sense of tranquility, and took many photographs. At Kinkaku-ji, they were impressed by what they described as a magnificent work of art, and took many photographs. Along Pontocho and Hanamikoji, they were hopeful of possibly seeing geiko and maiko, but I explained the situation, and they captured the atmosphere of the streets in photographs. I saw them off at Kyoto Station, bringing the tour to a close.
