What Is a 4-Hour Private Walking Tour of Kyoto Like? A Licensed Guide's Report

The guests were visiting Japan for the first time, having arrived in Kyoto the day before for a stay of several days. From the list of requested destinations they had provided in advance, I selected places that would fit within a four-hour tour. Despite the intense heat, the guests were energetic and we were able to proceed as planned. The guests seemed interested in Japanese history and culture, and I received questions especially about the differences between temples and shrines, and between Buddhism and Shinto. When I explained that, although I might not be entirely accurate, I believe Buddhism and Shinto coexist at the foundation of the Japanese mindset, the guests found this convincing. They appeared most interested in Nijo Castle, where visitors can actually enter the buildings. Toward the end of the tour they seemed to be getting hungry, and I am sure they enjoyed sampling various street foods at Nishiki Market.
